Why didn't Bioware give us an epic crew like in ME2?

Just way too many squadmates in ME2.

I thought the number of squadmates in ME2 was just right. Frankly if it was up to me the squad in ME3 would have consisted of the following

Garrus
Tali
Wrex
Grunt
Jacob
Kasumi
Zaeed
Thane
Mordin
Samara
Kirrahee
Kal'Reegar
Balak
Kaidan
EDI
and leastly Vega.

16 people lol.  So you wanted even more than ME2.

To each his/her own I guess.  That's way too many for me.  I'm fine with a 5-6 person tight knit crew.

I really have no problem with them only using me1 squadmates since i prefered those from me1 by far. The only crew member i really missed was a krogan squad member. I was very disappointed by neither Wrex nor Grunt rejoining the squad. Sometimes you really just feel like you need a total bad ass for some of the ****ed up missions you set out for:P

they said right after me2 you wouldn't get your whole squad back, it would be to much with the fact they could all die.

I can vaguely remember some rumors from before ME3 was released that most ME2 squadmates would return as temporary squadmates for their own missions. Does anyone know whether this was ever really considered to be inside the game by Bioware?

ME2's squad was my favourite because of the sheer variety we were given. I mean, yes, I love Liara, Wrex and Kaidan. But that's because they were the originals.

ME2's squadmates had the best character arcs in one game. The ME1 squadmates don't really change that much over the game (apart from Ashley (sometimes) and Garrus).

In fact, loyalty missions were the best thing to happen to Mass Effect as you get mission dedicated to your squaddies.

The more I look at the ME franchise.. the more I see how Bioware ruined it. /cry

Not true about coffee, my grandfather drank it every day of his life since he turned 16 and lived to the age of 80. I'm sure if Mordin drank coffee and survived ME3, he'd live to be 50.

What if you don't like Garrus or Tali? I do like them, I just think that they should give you the choice of who to have on your ship.

Btw OP, you mised out Thane (the best character of the entire series) and Legion (the second best).

I fully agree. The loyalty missions account for so much of what I enjoyed about the ME series.

Even the DLC focused on the characters - LotSB being the best DLC I have seen in a game ever.

I just wished they put more into the characters in ME3 and didn't waste their time and squad places on weird ideas like Vega or EDI.

It can kill you in high enough doses though...

I liked Vega's character, funny with the nicknames, reminds me of Lee Evans, but I do agree somewhat with EDI.

Glad they tried to create a crew of "normal" above average crew-mates in lieu of that superhero team ME2. But I did miss Jacob and Zaeed.

P.S. Grunt's and Jacks' appearances in ME3 were awesome.

Squad is actually my primary issue with ME3.

There is nothing wrong with present characters, it's just that squad needs to be bigger. Normandy shouldn't feel empty. After spending so much time in loyalty missions, my mind kept reminded me of them: "Life Support, Thane isn't there. Engineering, Jack isn't there."

Bioware said that the game grew bigger, their team(and budget?) grew bigger, very nice, good work, well done but why do the squad have to get smaller?

Agreed the number of squadmates in ME3 should have been the same as ME2 if not more, 15-17 at most.

I like having a smaller squad. I do feel some of the ME2 should have been brought back mostly the LIs. My ideal line up would have been.

Kaidan/Ashley
Liara
Garrus
Tali
Jacob
Miranda
Jack
Samara/Morinth
James
Javik

Because there was so many companions that we got very few meaningful conversations with any of them. Garrus really stood out for me: outside of his mission, I had two conversations with him. That is hardly anything.

Their side missions were enough, while I liked them all as characters I was only ever really attached to about a 1/3 of them as actual squad mates, even then I really didn't miss the 1/3 that I liked in ME3. The roster was just too crowed in ME2 and things have to progress in the story, so I'm happy with the parts they played.

I wish we had the choice of them being either war assets or Squad-mates(like with the VS), that way if you didn't care for them you get their 25 points, if you did they're back.

That's exactly what I was thinking. It would be really lame if Jack wasn't in game because other people didn't like her. I wouldn't recruit Miranda and if by some miracle she's alive in my game, she'd be an asset. But I know a lot of people DO like her, and power to 'em.

I would have been down with that. I don't think it would have worked in the first two games, but by the time you get to ME3, you've got a good enough feel for the characters that you can pick and choose which ones you'd like to have around pretty easy.

I still probably would have ended up with a pretty small crew, since I like the idea of people I can trust handling things in places I can't be in, but I think it would have been kind of awesome to have that option.

The implementation is probably too big to hope for it in any sort of DLC for ME3, but maybe we'll see it in future games.

While it might have been logistically impractical to have all the ME2 squaddies come back, it would have been nice to have them play a more integral role in the action in ME3. Many of the missions in which they appear are quite short, and a few, notably Zaeed, consist of little more than a cameo. That might be fine for people who felt no real connection to them, but for players who did like the ME2 cast lost out big time. I like the characters that are available well enough, but I think the game missed out on some potentially nice dramatic moments by not mixing the the ME1 and ME2 cast more. Imagine the sparks that would have been possible between Ash/Kaidan/James and some of the dirty dozen. Couple that with Garrus and Tali who've worked with both...could have made for some great dialogue.

I think ME3 squad was fine, problem is 7 isnt really that much when you had 12 in the last game, even if you get more dialogue with them.
