Am I the only one having some seriously ****ed up issues trying to run DA:O in Vista 64-bit?

I've lost count of how many times the game has crashed and Windows has oh-so-kindly informed me that the game has stopped working.

Put it this way: I've had the game for over two hours now and I'm still not past the Demon in the Harrowing test for the Mage origin.

That should take about 20 minutes.

I'm seriously contemplating driving over my computer at this point, then beating it mercilessly with a sledgehammer.

Any suggestions?

lol I'm guessing it's something with your drivers. Can you copy paste the error log for techs to look? I'm on 7-64bit and I've had it crash on me twice in about 12 hours of gameplay.. both though I was constantly alt-tabbing in and out of the game to look up info haha.

Hmm that seems odd I have 36 bit Vista, and have yet to have any such problem(beside the screen going black for a few seconds in between enter and leaving rooms). Have you been up to date with every umm update. Possibly your anti-virus protection is not agreeing with it?

This happens to me a lot, drives me crazy. The end of the game got so bad it was near unplayable. I run vista 64 bit. Stops running in particular on level up, and when trying to access the world map. Other times it just quits for no reason, but at least I know to save before level ups now...

I have my moments when it crashes but not that often.

I tend to blame Vista because well Vista is evil...I hate you microsoft...hope Win7 is better - yay for free upgrades or I might go back to XP..

I have this exact same problem. It was fine in the beginning of the game and as I got closer to the end, it crashed more and more frequently. I've found it crashes more frequently when I'm entering a new map. I'll have a second or two to walk around, then it'll die on me.

Throw Windows vista in the bin...it's the worst OS ever made...

I've gotten my game to startup twice, other than that I get "Dragon Age: Origins has stopped working" everytime I try to play.

I mash the keyboard in the bin directory and twice it's started.

Vista, 32-bit, updated drivers....

Those "something has stopped working"-things don't take that literal as there is no way for windows to really know if that's actually the case.

As for launching twice...
You mean literally you have 2 daorigins.exe processes running?

I posted this response in another thread, but I will copy here. The third step only applies of course if you have an ATI card.

First thing to try is turning off the Aero feature for Vista if you have it on. It causes crashing problems on some peoples rigs while gaming. Some games are set up to turn it off automatically when the game starts some aren't.

Second thing is to stop all unnecessary services while your playing in case there is a conflict or to free up resources. Click start and then in the search box type msconfig then press enter. Click on the services tab. Scroll to the bottom and check the box marked hide all microsoft products, that is important to do. A lot of the boxes should disappear. Uncheck any of the boxes left with a check beside them. Then click on the start up tab. Uncheck all checked boxes there as well. Hit apply and then ok. Restart your PC.

Third thing, hit start and in the search box type services.msc. On the right should be a list of services, look for one labeled AMD external event utility. Right click on it and then click on properties. Under start up type choose disable and then hit the stop button. Hit apply and then ok.

I hope these steps help you.

If you're asking about the patch, you can get it here.. Otherwise, that's a really broad question.

Someone is either young, or got a real short memory.  Don't have to go much before XP to find something much worse....
