I'm not fine with poorly-written characters

Like Asari who predominately revolve around sex? Great!

Unit-Alpha wrote...

Um, it's because from a writing standpoint, he is 90% defined by his sexuality

How so?

This is not a relationship sim. Seriously.

Let's take another couple games with romances: Witcher 2 and Deus Ex: HR. In neither one of those is there an option at the beginning that says, "Would you like a homosexual romance option instead?" No, because that is pure shoehorning. Cortez/Traynor were characters defined by their sexuality. This is *not* good writing, indicating they were shoehorned in. Kaiden's romance for MaleShep: again, shoehorning.

Both instances cheapened the characters and made them much more flimsy and 2D. This is not good writing. So congratz, you got your homosexual romance option. For people who don't pursue it (vastly the majority) we have to deal with horribly defined and paper-thin characters. That's my problem with them.

Just to be clear, I fully support the rights of the LGBT community in real life.

Um wut?

Cortez and Traynor were NOT defined by being homosexual. Playing as MaleShep the only thing that came out of Traynor's mouth regarding her sexuality was mentioning EDI's voice was attractive for a VI. Cortez is mouring a recently dead spouse. That's rough, really rough. Cortez is mainly vega's buddy and a damn good shuttle pilot, Traynor is a damn fine comm. specialist and finds critical missions and adjusts to being on the front lines. Other than doing their romances their sexualities take a back seat to who they are as a person. Also as someone who came CLOSE to doing Kaidan's Male romance path (was a Liaramnacing PT where I talked to Kaidan first and had to turn him down) it was actually pretty well done. It' much different than him talking to a romance or unromanced Femshep. He knows he's talking to a guy who might not be into him and approaches the reveal of possible feelings as such. It wasn't shoehorned at all.

Tell me characterization of either one of those characters that has to do with them personally, not related to their roles on the Normandy, but not related to their sexuality.

Steve is a ship fanatic. you point out a ship on the citadel and he tells you it's name and can tell you when it was built based on how it looks. Also samantha is chess player and somewhat of a hygenic person since she has a toothbrush that makes mass efect fields to destroy plaque and she's in awe of Shepard's personal shower.Image IPB

This ship has sailed. Pointless topic is pointless. There won't be any more ME games with Shepard.

I'm pretty sure that 90% of reasons why I adore Legion is not due to his asexuality.

Yep.

Why deprive the player of more options?

Because real life doesn't work that way.

Characters should have defined personalities and interests, rather than being whatever Shepard wants them to be.

Maybe  the next ME game won't have YOUR Shepard, but my Shepard picked Control.  He'll still be in the next game even if it takes place a billion years after the last one.

Since this is going downhill anyway...

Situational sexual behaviors do not mean sexuality has essentially changed. The vast majority of straight people who have homosexual conduct in prison or even identify as gay or bi in prison shed that behavior/identity quickly when released.

This makes the endings worse... Traynor's toothbrush isn't going to work anymore :o

Sure, the game doesn't take into account whether custom Sheps look monstrous.

But that is hardly a convincing argument in favor of having every love interest's sexuality change depending on Shepard's gender and interests.

Bioware got it right with ME3: Characters have a defined sexuality and Shepard is unable to change their mind.

It's the same type of thing and it's allowed in game already and I don't see complaints about it.

It's called...hypocrisy...the thing most posts in this thread reek of (that and entitlement).

Yet necessary for language to be able to convey meaning.

I don't think sexuality is always set-in-stone for everyone and I never said that, but my point is that prison-life and the situational behaviors prisoners engage in usually don't have much of a lasting effect on overall sexual behavior or identity. Not saying other things don't, just not this.

Yet he's still able to date everyone regardless if his actions are in complete opposite to moral standards of the LIs. That one is still not fixed. Again, the only person to turn Shepard down based on morality (Samara says she doesn't feel anything at all to Renegade Shep) was Samara - who wasn't a LI. Other LIs think it's fine if Sheps kills innocent people in cold blood and will talk how kind and amazing prson SHep is lol... And no one complains about that

Indeed. Are you a murderous psychopath who openly mistreats aliens because of racism, but you want to tap that blue virgin anyway? Just say the right things to her in 4 "special" conversations and she'll fall right into your lap without any care for how you otherwise act!

Clearly these characters have perfectly defined preferences and personalities that are wholly realistic and in no way built to make sex scenes easily accessible.

If you pick the Synthesis ending, I think her toothbrush becomes sentient.

You should probably know this, then. The EC will add a fourth ending involving Morinth. It's been leaked, actually.

To me it looks like there are enough possibilities to decline a romance. Making everyone bi is the least of my concerns. The actual content of the romances themselves were a bit disappointing. One of my MaleSheps romanced Ashley and it felt like she never trusted Shepard. When she finally did it was me who became very skeptical. Another MaleShep added her to the war assets instead. If her behavior was meant to make it more realistic or trendy then it was wasted on me.

Entitlement is demanding that Bioware cater to your interests by making every character a romance option for the protagonist.
