This is not dangerous in any sense in fact anyone having problems with it at present is likely using Windows 7 which enables this by default. Which in and of itself is fine, however DAO will actually try to use ECN but if your router and NIC don't actively support it you will run into this problem. ECN Capability has no corrolation to any form of network security protocol, it is merely there to help expedite packet recovery due to server congestion. Microsoft has this to say of it's functionality:

"Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN) is a mechanism that
provides routers with an alternate method of communicating network
congestion. This notification effectively reduces TCP retransmissions
and increases throughput."

I just figured this could use clarification so people were more at ease, I know that I would be somewhat apprehensive to throw security out the window to play a game.

I'm on Windows 7 64 bit, it is disabled by default and I am still having this problem, clearly this is some server congestion issue...

After doing this and creating a new save, I get a "timed out accessing your online storage". I've played through the game completely a couple of times and created many manual saves, but my profile still shows 0 characters.

 I confirm that forwarding port 18081 (TCP & UDP) in addition to disabling ECN allow me to connect perfectly.  Was able to download all DLC in about 5 minutes withotu a hiccup and am happily on my way.

Some additional information to chew on...

We just upgraded from AT&T standard DSL to AT&T U-Verse (TV/Phone/Internet) which required the use of an upgraded modem (or combined residential gateway). Both the old and the new modems are 2wire branded (which are total **** IMO when it comes to Internet connectivity outside the functionality of web browsing). On my old DSL modem to get everything to play nice I had to put the device into bridge mode with my Linksys router (running DD-WRT) handling everything (firewall/LAN) as the 2wire, even with a DMZ set would still block ports and there is no way to completely bypass the firewall without using bridge mode. I knew the moment I saw 2wire on the new equipment coming in that I was in for a major headache and sure enough, the exact same issues exist only now, with my new 2wire 3800HGV-B residential gateway, I cannot put the device into bridge mode as such a solution would knock the TV service out (U-Verse is TV over IP). Since the 2wire provides total **** wireless connectivity I still had to put my Linksys behind the device for proper LAN functionality and set the 2wire to put it in DMZ+ mode. My Linksys now serves the home all Internet and in theory I should have no problems, however this crap 2wire modem is still firewalling my traffic and causing the problems initially described in this thread and will undoubtedly cause problems with other online games. I'm going to escalate my issue with AT&T 2nd tier support as I think they may be able to disable the firewall entirely via telnet. So for those of you still experiencing the issue, the fix may not be resolvable on your end and you may with to seek the aid of your ISP.

I have no ports open and no software firewall; sometimes the game connects and sometimes it does not. (Although it always connected before I installed any patches.) Not really a client-side problem, excluding the DO:A software itself obviously. But I disagree with people here that this is a major bug, that would be the malfunctioning DLC system.

This is a joke right?

I just noticed I'm actually on Logged Out all the time. Even though sometimes my profile updates itself, and I never had DLC issues.

Now that I seen it, it doesn't let me log in back saying I'm not connected (lol), and this port suggestions was funny but I tried just for fun, and of course it didn't help.

For all those having problems even thought they have forwarded ports. (At a guess anyone running a 64 bit machine)

Try opening a command prompt (run as administrator)

Then enter the following

netsh int tcp set global ecncapability=disabled

No need to reboot.Close command prompt and run game. Log in.

Im running as Admin, but I am told the following command was not found. Image IPB

I can connect and was able to download  Return to Ostagar, but I cant update the client to play it. Totally freakin' awesome. Bunderful.

I've opened port 18081 (TCP & UDP) on my firewall and I still can't download. They all stick at 0% and eventually come up with "download failed". I tried running all the modules as admin, too. Any more ideas? Thanks!

After I have tried all that that has been described without solution to the problem, I have found the solution reading this page:

http://www.speedguid...les.php?id=2574

The whole page is rich of important notes, also the section "Gaming Tweak".

I have not opened any TCP/UDP doors in the router and I have allowed that the firewall left the executables of Dragon Age all free ones in all the directions.

My settings are (Windows 7 64-bit): netsh int tcp set global...

rss=enabled

chimney=automatic

dca=enabled

EnableTCPA=1 (setted in the registry)

autotuninglevel=disabled

congestionprovider=ctcp

ecncapability=disabled

Tcp1323Opts=0 (setted in the registry)

I can finally say that probably this problem exists when the connection is wi-fi.

My brother is connected with cable LAN and doesn't have problems of login and profile update.

I hope to have resolved the problem, at least for the greatest departs of us!

Have you checked out the Redeemed DLC Troubleshooting FAQ

One thing to do is to make sure the Dragon Age Origins Content Update service is running.  Try manually starting it before you start the game.

1.) Press the windows key + R (or click Start and then RUN) and type in services.msc and press ENTER
2.) Locate the Dragon Age: Origins - Content Update in the list of services.
3.) Right click it and select START

Hi everyone! Wasn't sure where to post this, hope here is ok. Got some exotic problem with the game. My DLC, achievements, screens work excellent, no issues. But the game simply doesn't upload characters somehow though set to do that. The CC uploads chars instantly to this site (I last tested that a couple of days ago - works fine), but I can't check whether they would update because I can't export them into game! The export list is empty though I have the Pre-release characters folder and didn't delete anything. So obviously something wrong with the game. That bothers me because it may afterwards bug the char export into Awakening, and that's a DISASTER!!! Please-please-please somebody help! ;(

My DLC shows.

My characters do not upload.

I have disabled my firewall (please don't hack me :)

I have ensured all ports are open on my router. The character creator stuff still uploads fine.

I have tried the command prompt fix and have had no results so far.

On that note note, somebody please click on my profile so i can see if it will update.

Христос на пончик! I am getting very frustrated.

don't know if you know but you can go too the EA site and look up ALL the ports used for DA:O... here is a copy paste from there site.

"If you're having issues uploading any of your Dragon Age: Origins characters to the BioWare Social Site, make sure you have port 18081 (TCP/UDP) open. Be sure you have the requisite ports mentioned in the game manual(s) open as well: 80 (TCP/UDP), 8000 (TCP), 8001 (UDP), and 443 (TCP)"

if you doubt me go and look for your self. hope this helps someone :)

i'm having issues with char's uploading from ps3 to the site. think it may be due the the fact that one of them has accent marks over letters in her name. but i'ma open these ports and see if it helps. if not i'll just delete her and see if that fixes it since she has beat the game already anyways.
