I don't hate him, I don't love him. He is a decent teammate but didn't inspire any strong feelings.

In-game he's just stunningly mediorce. I don't dislike him but I'm not exactly going to bring him ahead of any other squadmates. However on paper he seems like he should be very intersting.

1. Spent time in the alliance, worked as a corsair and left due to be sick of having his hands tied constantly

2. Joins Cerberus because he feels they could do some good but has clear issue with some of it's more shady activities. He also dated Miranda once during his early years there.

3. Finds out his father isn't dead but in fact alive. However it turns out that he committed several war crimes and set-up a harem.

The fact none of the above is explored in any depth and Jacob acts like finding out his father was a monster isn't a big deal means we don't ever care. The execution of the character as a generic nice guy means he never rises above average. Contrast Kaidan.

1. He was a biotic with L2 implants.

2. He likes steak.

I should add I liked him better before ME 3... they kind of made him mean to both Shep. Like saying his girl/wife/whatever wanted to name his kid after Shep. But he talked her out of it. I mean come on you don't tell someone that.

1a. Biotic with L2 implants who is extremely self-controlled.

1b. You find out he's self-controlled because he once snapped at biotic training camp and killed his instructor with his biotic powers to protect a girl he was in love with.

1c. The girl wound up being terrified of him because of it, so he became repressively self-controlled.

3. He likes or liked cheesy sci-fi/fantasy novels.

4. He also seems to like his alcohol beyond just a good beer.

I didn't romance him, so I didn't particularly hate him. He's just less interesting than other characters.

I don't mind Jacob. I kind of like the dude. He's a stand up, jam up guy. He was the straight man who was always up front with you and TIM in ME2. Everyone else either got jealous of Shep, was Garrus Vakarian, or was a Shepard suck up.

Meh. He was there. He wasn't offensive. We could spare the oxygen. Beyond that, there was nothing.

I still don't know why you would say that to somebody.  It's fine to not want to name the kid after Shepard for whatever reason, but why say that?

Personally, I'm more or less ok with Jacob.  I didn't romance him, so that didn't come up, but I can see where people would be upset.  I also didn't find him to be so boring that I disliked him.  Then again, I think my opinion of him has mellowed in light of a far worse character: James Vega.

I liked Jacob. There wasn't really much to him, but I liked him. My Shepard trusted him in ME2. However if you romance Jacob, you really get a kick in the teeth.

Hmmm...I like him at times. I don't have a strong opinion either way I guess. He does annoy me sometimes though, but who doesn't in this game. Shepard annoys me a lot sometimes. Some of the auto dialogue for example. :-/ "I'll sleep when I'm dead" I know the RP aspect is limited, but if I'm putting myself in his shoes...I can't imagine myself saying something so morbid and cheesy.

Dunno why people complain about Jacob romance. It seemed pretty clear to me that it was a one night stand/fling. They just flirted nonstop and experienced the PRIIIIIIZZZE.

I was just relating what I remembered. Little tongue-in-cheek. I'm aware he killed a ****** instructor back at biotic camp and that's why he's always reserved. Dark and troubled past (fangirls and boys swoon) etc.

Though the last two no idea about them but they are hardly compelling. I guess he just seems more interesting to people who want him as a LI. I think he's the weakest human squadmate. But thats just my opinon, no need to go spreading it around.

I'd like to introduce the Jacob's Indoctrinated Theory (it sounds funnier than any label I can come up with involving the terms "love potion" and "prize").

In a nutshell, these were Cerberus scientists we found Jacob protecting. They were each studying a different aspect of what was probably Reaper technology or technology derived from Reaper technology. Many of them are pretty cold-hearted people who only banded together because they realized that they were on the Illusive Man's extermination list.

Well, what was Ms. Brynn Cole researching before she went AWOL? I say it's MIND CONTROL!!!!!!! (dramatic echo) She needed a protector and elected Jacob to be it. So she zapped him.

"He's still in love with you, Shepard, but I control his heart now! Muwa, muwaha, muHOhahahahahahahahahahaha!!!"

Man. That'd be like a bad episode of Sailor Moon.

iirc the messed up thing about Jacob (well other than being boring etc etc)is that of all the LI's in 2 he was the only one that said "I loved you"

I had too many classmates in high school that were Team Jacob to be able to ever join another group that has the same name.... They were certainly more annoying than that other team....

Yeah... don't mind Jacob, but I didn't like him enough to ever truly get invested in his character.

We just had a thread like this not too long ago.

Here

It was locked down because for whatever reason it turned into a debate about race or whatever. I didn't pay much attention to it after like page 4 or 5.

His support thread. In case you couldn't find it.

Not that I ever saw, but then I was always biding my time waiting for Samurai Pizza Cats or Ronin Warriors to come on, depending on the year.

ANYWAY!

The point is that a lot of Cerberus science can be considered unethical and there was Jacob right smack in the middle of protecting the very scientists responsible for it.  It seems uncharacteristic barring strange outside influences.

Like the Prize.

I didn't care about him before, but I'm definitely not on his side now. The guy basically told my Shepard she was incapable of love when the love of her life was right there with her.

People keep bringing this up. He may have said the words, but I don't believe he meant them. He only drops the L-word when you're trying to kick him out and he's already all worked up, this was after he refers to Shepard as a prize. Everything sounds like a line. Even in ME3 when Brynn says he's 'still' in love with Shepard, I didn't believe it. I think the guy doesn't even have a clue what real love is. Real love is waiting for six months before shacking up with someone else.

I posted this in another thread, but I'll say it again; people need to stop hating on Brynn. What she said to romanced Shepard was the result of stress and fear; she was clearly threatened by Shepard and has to live with the fact that Jacob told her that he's in love with someone else. Her life is in imminent danger, Jacob is basically her lifeline, and then that someone else comes along right when the galaxy is going to crap. With how fickle Jacob is apparently, it's not a stretch to imagine Jacob would think he has nothing to lose by 'following his heart' back to his old girlfriend, leaving Brynn alone and pregnant during the darkest period in human history. Brynn knows she can't compete with Shepard, she's basically just lucky that Jacob is an idiot with daddy issues and that's the only reason he's staying with her.

Brynn didn't make Jacob cheat. People need to stop blaming her for Jacob's actions. She wasn't the one who betrayed Shepard.
