Just read some of the comments in this thread for a clue. Sad to say some of our fellow males can be rather offputting in the company of women, causing women to prefer to play amongst themselves.Count Viceroy wrote...
Why does gender even matter? Totally meaningless in this context. Unless you're implying that one gender is better at playing than the other....I'm hurt, offended and terribly disapointed in the internet on this fine afternoon.
Where's the other chicks?!?

Just to clarify - it doesn't really. It would just be nice to not be the only girl for once. I don't mind getting put with the guys, as long as they're good players.
There, there, feeling better now?

I'm pretty sure the Mass Effect fanbase in general has more female players than most videogames. But I'd also assume fewer female players are intensively running the multiplayer. That's just how it is. Taking a look at my own Origin friends list, there's...only three women. And my list is reasonably long.
You know for a fact they're all guys? I get taken for a dude all the time, and pretty much never bother to correct the assumption. Worst case scenario, I actually get more respect as a gamer that way, after all.

'Usually' is a qualifier that means it's easier just to ask. With the quality of ME3's voice chat and the general quality of headset mics, a lot of the people I come across sound pretty gender-ambiguous.

Assuming they speak at all.
As for the avatar thing, my Origin avatar is Wonder Woman and my avatar here is a femShep and AFAICT neither does a thing to reduce the chance of guys thinking I'm a guy, so....

I don't usually have my mic on unless I'm meeting up with people I know already - there's too many angry 12 yr olds out there I really don't want to talk to. I don't see it as a bad thing if new peeps turns out to be guys, as long as they're good players.
Ps. No offence if you're 12, yeah?

That would seem to be fairly accurate. Case in point, I'm a woman and of my fairly long friends list, there are only two other women who actively play this game (and have mics... I suppose some of my "mute" friends could also be chicks and I wouldn't know it).
As for the OP, I'd offer to friend you, but I see you are on XBox, so... would be hard to synch my PS3 up to you.

I do seem to run into female players more often when I play in the morning (EDT) on PS3, if you happen to understand 日本語.
