For pretty much anything I'll turn subs on. It's useful.

Though there is the problem that I'm more likely to miss things in the background because I'm reading but they're easy to notice so it's not that big of a deal.

Cant play without subs... the voice audio always has been completely f***ed up since ME1... half the time you cant even here what the characters are saying, especially when its outside the normal conversation wheel

I have Subtitles on for every Video Game and DVD whenever possible, including the Mass Effect series.

There is (or was) a glitch where the dialog would cut for following dialog that would fire prematurely. Without subtitles, you can miss an entire line with Matriarch Aethyta where she says that she's Liara's father. (All you can here is that Benezia is Liara's mother.) This happens with completing LotSB and viewing the videos on the SB's ship in ME2.

Without the subtitles, you would not hear that and be slapped with the Father? response for what seems like no reason.

When they fix this, I'll turn them off. (It might be fixed in 1.03. I don't know yet.)

EDIT: I prefer off if possible. I cannot read the subtitles and watch the characters at the same time. They often have characters do stuff while speaking that I can easily miss with subtitles on.

Third playthrough - wanted to actually catch what the shadows were saying in the dreams. About half of that dialog is too distorted to be sure.

All the time. My hearing's pretty good so I probably don't need them but I find the extra (visual) input helps me catch everything that's going on. My only (small) grip is when the subs come up before the character speaks their line but that's a timing issue and probably unavoidable without getting obsessive.

What I hate is when people decide to fraps their games or certain scenes/moments and they keep the subtitles on.

It would be neat if there was a 'hot key' for turning the subs on and off, on the fly so to speak, without having to go into the Options menu to enable/disable them if you know there's a cool scene coming up.

Always. English isn't my first language, so it's easier to understand what everyone's saying when it's accompanied by text.

Always use subtitles anymore for every game. I am "this" close to start enabling them on TV shows too as producers can't seem to realize that the background music is supposed to be played at a lower volume than the dialog tracks.

Subtitle's ruins the immersion for me. I mean it if there's a brilliant line like Garrus' "Favorite spot on the Citadel" I'd end up reading it first and it would lose most of it's impact.

I initially play without subtitles. After a few playthroughs I usually switch them on, so I can get through some of the more boring dialogues quicker.

I always turn the subtitles on, especially when ME is not dubbed in my native language.

Always, English isn't my first language, and it's easier to understand what's happening if I can read it as well.

My dad is hard of hearing so we always have subtitles on the TV. I used to find them distracting but I like them now, stops me missing anything. So I always switch them on games, good job too since Traynor speaks silently sometimes.

I always had the subs on in ME1 and 2, but then in ME3 subs weren't default and I just kept playing without them. Now I always have them off

You know, not everyone who plays the game speaks or understands english, so they have to put subtitles on.

Always on, but mostly because I play videogames in English and I don't want to lose informations or details.
I do the same with movies and tv series.
