So... I absolutely hate this part of the game. My very first playthrough was with a vanguard and I had to drop the level down to casual just to get through it. Now I'm playing vanguard again and I really want to beat this damn section on insanity. Anyone got any tips?

I've maxed out  charge, nova, fitness and reave. Don't know what weapons to bring but it's a new game so my choices are limited (don't have the Graal yet for instance).

It's really those two sections (you know the ones I mean) that I need help with.

Just as an aside, is there any benefit to maxing cryo ammo on Shepard if I'm using incendiary and have the squadmates use the squad cryo ammo?

Fortack started the following thread to help players get through Grissom Academy. Applies to all classes.

The Grissom Academy Atrium Strategy Guide

Hope that helps.

For some more practical advice, Bring Liara if you have her. If you have her Warp maxed out, her Warp plus your Reave (or Charge or even Nova) should kill things more quickly. If you have Javik, His Dark Channel/Lift/Slam/Lift Grenades plus your Reave (or Charge or Nova) should also kill things more quickly.

See the thread I linked to above for movement and positioning strategies.

As for Cryo Ammo, Rank 4 (Squad Bonus) is good enough for most of the game. Rank 6 Increased Freeze Chance might help your squadmates more but I never noticed too much of a difference between rank 4 and 6.

It isn't that bad.  Probably harder if you try to charge everything, unless you have a high level character or are very good at Charge-Nova.

If you don't like Nova, or if you aren't comfortable doing that then it isn't really that bad as long as you head right near the beginning of the fight and engage them from the high ground.

HAAA FUN TIMES! I'm doing my Vanguard Insanity (Renegade) run now. Just finished this not long ago. I know how ya feel. the part RIGHT AFTER Jack and her student is where I had problems. Those Engineers and Turrets....

What I did was to focus on Engineers right away. This is a must since turrets are the most deadly weapon IMO also with this, take down shield generators

secondly: centurions, their grenades and smoke are become greatly problematic.

then focus your energy on Atlas and Guardians

Well I finally did it. Died quite a few times on the first section before I figured out a good strategy. Basically I took the high ground asap, took care of the combat engineer right below with Reave and then focused on zipping around the upper level taking care of any approaching enemies while the squadies dealt with anyone below. As long as I was out of sight of the Atlas I was golden.

The second part was surprisingly easy. I focused on taking out all the engineers first (zipping from on side of the map to the other again and again is fun!) and after that it was just cleanup. Didn't even die once.

Yeah, this was the most frustrating part by far in perhaps the game on Insanity (also did it with a Vanguard like last week). Turrets make the whole two sections you're describing so obnoxious. I think I ended up reloading a save, dropping money on weapon upgrades, and changing my bonus power, just to avoid the frustration of doing it for hours on end That mission is one of the last hard ones though, since it's not too long until you're high level, have lots of research upgrades, new guns, and higher level guns/mods.

Alternativly u can bring garrus and edi with u. Both will help strip shields from enemies and those accursed turrets.  Reave is a good call here, but inferno grenade can also be usefull, as it damages armor quite well and has no cd so u can spamm it.  G and EDI both have great anti-shield/anti-armor capabilities so its a no brainer.

Liara/Javic are okay as well, just there both quite squishy.

Agreed, it's the last hard part of the game really. After that it becomes far easier.

I've never been comfortable using grenades really, I think it's just the idea that they're so limited that I always hold off using them so inevitably I never use them :pinched:

Oh agreed, Javik especially has a tendancy to just rush off and, I dunno, try to heatbutt the Atlas or something.

As a vanguard with Liara/Javik it was face roll on insanity (especially if you import your lvl 30 shep from ME2 at the start).

Charge + nova, charge + nova, charge + nova (throw in a singularity or dark channel now and then if pressing 2 buttons starts to become boring)

Charge then nova - right after the nova pause it by bringing up your tactical HUD, chose the next target and charge.

It's quite boring, but an easy way to beat it on insanity.
