Angel is one of my favorite series of all time. Whedon and Greenwalt were masters of the gut wrenching plot twist and bittersweet ending. I found BtVS downright merciful in comparison.

@android - I'll look into that next time I buy DVDs. Well, maybe. Depends on if I want my heart broken at the time. :o

A tactic which Whedon later used to an even greater degree when he did Angel.

To be fair, from living life, reading and writing it's easy to see that "good" relationships are seldom long lived. The majority of long relationships grow stale and boring, thus uninteresting to read, hear or live through. It's much more interesting if relationships. So yes, Angel being unable to be happy because it cuases the demon that he is to emerge in poetic and interesting.

@Seagloom

It's George Lucas' first film, it's almost forty years old now if not older. It'll break your heart in the way American Beauty breaks your heart. It does so because it says something that's horrifyingly real.

Neither of which were science fiction. I think the trope works well for sci-fi, it has just been done to death in the past two decades or so.

I'm gonna ****** people off here, but don't you guys realize that what makes the Witcher special is that he's a predetermined character!? It's MUCH easier to do blank slate. Most RPG's do blank slate.

The only way to do a good "blank slate" character is by only doing ti in illusion. Making two orthree predetermined characters with a strong history and connection to the story is the only way to do it right in a video game. But in an RPG, the physical customization of your avatar goes a long way. We should all have learned this from Mass Effect.

I'm no game developer, but I imagine it must be a bit easier to structure a narrative around a predetermined character, like Geralt, Shepard or Hawke, rather than a more non-linear, sandbox type of narrative with customizeable character. The blank slate approach would seem to be more challenging.

I'm willing to trade off a potentially tighter narrative to play a character that feels more my own. I get enough of predefined characters in almost every game ever made. Besides, most blank slate characters are not truly blank slate. They are always broadly confined to a specific role in the story regardless of what stats or features are tweaked.

I'm fine with both approaches. In fact, I've suggested they try doing a female protagonist, which is unlikely. I love their female characters, but they either get killed off or pushed aside.

Just glad it's sci-fi and I hope the game gets the same attention to story and art design TW2 got. This announcement deserves something special:

This is the best news I heard all day. I knew something would be coming forward from CDPR on their sci-fi RPG, but I didn't think it would be so early. Thought obviously it would be at E3.

With steampunk Dishonored (is it "steam"...their official industrial powerhouse is whaling) that appears to be phenominal and now this game, and we can feel comfortable knowing what kind of quality it will be, I'm one happy Sajji. Cannot wait. And didn't know TW1 was coming to consoles...even better news. Hope its a good port like TW2 was...almost certain it will be.

CDPR is quickly joining Bethesda Game Studios, Rockstar, From Software and Valve as my favorite developers. From Software joining the list for Dark Souls having ascended into my personal top 5 all time.

I'm super interested to learn the premise of the plot, details about the world we'll be playing in and the gritty details of how the game is constructed. And the name, of course. It'd be nice if it incorporated elements of Deus Ex to a degree but is its own thing. I'm sure it will be.

Absolute sweetness :)

Main reason I don't like The Witcher Series, the predetermined character goes against the way I like to play my characters.

LOL no. I love TW series but I hate Geralt, so no, Geralt or predetermined character does not amke TW series or TW2. Preset characters suck, sure there is some that are well odne but when you rp your own character it's much better then a preset character.

Oh, I wasn't trying to imply it was a bad thing in this case. Quite the contrary; the show actually had one of my favourite endings ever.

But I'm getting this off-topic. Anyway, I'll be keeping an eye on this game.

You have all the opportunity in the world to direct the story and to some degree, Geralt himself. I don't see the problem here, unless it's a purely visual one. To me, visual customization comes second. Controlling a character who has character, and one who shapes the story is priority.

Geralt is always agnry, will sometimes say rude remarks no matter what, is straight, always thinks of himself ect. You don't have laot of freedom for Geralt except, who oyu want to side with, how oyu want to handle the job(professol or be an ass) sex partner who has to be female ect. People want to role play their character, not an authors character. Jensen and (dare I say it) Thorton where better handled, but oyu where still restriced. Bethesda and Bioware do that, however, with Betehsda the main story stinks and Biowares main story quality and choices/outcomes is going down the crapper so it's getting harder to play an RPG game that ;et's you fully rp a character and also have choices/outcomes. Also what if the va for the PC sucks? That's why having both genders is a better option, because it's possibleo ne will be good or one gender fits your style. CDP has no excuses now because this is their creation. Also when the player has a huge disconnection to their PC, issues can arise. The player should connect to their character first, then focus on the other stuff.

I wonder what the name of the IP is going to be.

Reading an article, I remembered something. I hope badly this isn't some third person shooter ala what Mass Effect evolved into. I'd be disappointed.

"Enemy contacts!"

"Shoot 'em!"

I'm completely okay with a predetermined character, so long as we get to have influence over his/her motivations and decisions like we did with Geralt. The most important factor that I look for in a game is story, and I'm willing to forgo choosing hairstyle, eye color, etc. for a character who is more fleshed out in the sense that he/she has a history and relationships that already exist.. with me being placed in the driver's seat at that particular moment of time. I'd prefer that over a protagonist who I can shift and mold into whatever I want, but has no story, voice, etc.

What I mean to say is, I wouldn't mind being able to customize, but I'd be totally okay sacrificing that if a pre-determined character means a better story and more variety in consequences of choices made.

I can't agree with you about Geralt. I feel he's more nuanced than you give him credit. The focus of The Witcher has never been about your PC's personality, it's about directing the story, and the consequences are what make the player dwell on what type of Geralt they've created.

Since they have a dual track through TW2 - Roche and Iorveth, it wouldn't be a stretch to do something similar for the new IP, but with both genders, each representing a unique path through the story. I'd be all for it.

I dunno, I seem to recall the final episode finale being kinda up-beat.

Certainly fewer main characters died in the course of Buffy, even if at least one came back to life. Or unlife. :P

The problem is TW2 is an rpg, one of the core things for an CRPG, well at least for me is connecting to my character. I can't with Geralt. Now don't get me wrong, TW2 was a fantastic game, and the outcomes of my choices was outstanding so was the ending, but when it comes down to the character, Geralt I can't connect to him at all and I see that as a big issue in an crpg. That's why I prefer blank slate characters where I can pick my gender in a CRPg. That's why I hope CDP is givng us some freedom. I don't want full freedom mind you. I would not mind if the character has a set name, set past, set "class" but as long as I can pick the gender, how that character grows, their personality, their interest, what they love and hate ect. That's a core thing for me with a CRPG, and that's one thing TW2 did fail with Geralt.

I'd prefer a predetermined character over an interchangeable soulless and genderless blank state.

I've never really liked futuristic games/shows that have characters with mohawks and other related hairstyle types in it.

I don't know why. It's probably the weirdest reason to dislike something, but to me it just seems that it tries so hard to be different that it looks idiotic.

Actually, for that matter I just hate mohawks and the like in general. At least when they're taken to such extremes.

It depends on the game and the situation. If a TES had a voiced character and set protagonist, I'd be super pissed, and there would be wrath so powerful that it would be unimaginable :P. But for The Witcher, Geralt is the character. It is what it is, and its an enjoyable flavor of good gaming and role playing. Similar, but to a lesser extent, with Adam Jensen in Deus Ex: Human Revolution, where narrative wasn't as good as TW2. But I thought Jensen's character was extremely well done, however.

This is wild speculation and conjecture, but let's for a minute imagine the man in the picture is the main protagonist and PC in this upcoming game, and he's voiced. Possibly CDPR can allow cosmetic customization to give players just that little bit of personalization, such as hair color, piercings or facial tattoos.

Would anybody object to that for a new protagonist in a new IP?

EDIT: Now don't get me wrong, i like blank slates and i have no problem with playing one, but i prefer a set character.
That said, i do prefer with a blank slate/pre determinated character over the middle ground, like Shepard or Hawke.

This. Hawke and Shepard are terrible characters. They already had an established history but didn't even the depth of a predetermined character like Geralt or the freedom of the Dovahkiin.
