Weren't they driven to the verge of bankruptcy during the development of Witcher 1: White Wolf for consoles? Couldn't handle developing two games at once, bleeding money, so they cancelled the project, and most of the team was shifted to W2.
Think some developers even went off to create a new studio to help CDPR's financial situation. The Hard Reset devs.
Not sure if that's what happened, but I do know that White Wolf caused a lot of issues for CDPR.
That was before GoG though.
GoG is just that GoG. It's not steam and the video library is limited, so we're not exactly talking about a huge sourceof steady income here. They have had issues with trying to get publishers to let their titles be released on GoG due to their no DRM policy, so what large publisher backing are you talking about?
We know they used Capcom last time I believe, but then ended up in legal difficulties for removing the DRM had their issue with trying to use THQ, although that is now moot. So what publisher backing has let them do whatever? It's not been plain sailing from what I've seen.
And while they aren't small, they are still privately owned and their backing or finance came initially from the publishing and translation of games in eastern EU, as well as their distribution of those products and other software. Not games. That was before CDPR, when the parent company was still CDP, CDPR is the dev. studio specifically for games.
