I installed Dragon Age Origins, but when i try to play it says "Failed to detect supported video card." I play other PC games so i know i have a good video card. I have windows vista, and i tried running as admin and re-installing it. Any idea on what to do?

Also, i have the latest version version of directX, and i dont know how to update drivers or find out what kind of card i have.

"Play other games" is never a valid excuse for ignoring the warning labels on games.

Preliminary diagnostic information

PCs are not *anything* at all like game console systems.  There is almost nothing that is truly "standard" between various branded PCs, making the game developers' jobs very difficult, and resulting in warning labels attached to game boxes for those games that have serious requirements.

In case you have misunderstood how to evaluate your PC compared to that game box label, we have to start from here.  Fill it all in.

Basic Hardware Specification Chart (Empty so far)

Processor Manufacturer: AMD / Intel
Processor Name / Type: Athlon 64 / Pentium / C2D / dual core / quad, etc.
Processor Speed:  ?.? Ghz (or AMD Performance Number)
Operating System / Service Pack: WindowsXP with SP #?, Vista ? (Oh, no!)
System RAM: ? ? GBs (MBs, if less than 1024)
Video (GPU) Manufacturer: ATI / Nvidia (only those two are supported, PERIOD)
Video Card Model: (examples) Radeon HD 3650 / Geforce 8600 GT
Video Card Driver Version: Catalyst ?.? / Nforce ??.??
. . . (use numbers, not the word "latest")
Video Card onboard RAM: ? ? ? MBs
Sound Card Manufacturer:
Sound Card Model:

I will link you to another thread, in which I had the time to look up a couple of Microsoft tutorials.

OF course, I'll have to wait to do that until I'm editing this. Fast Reply is so naked.

You just might not even have one, if the PC was a really cheap item (or an average laptop). Microsoft had plenty of material you could have (and should have) taken the time to read. However, in the DxDiag report, it's going to be detailed on the third tab -- you can also put your pointer on any uncovered part of the system's desktop, right click, and choose "Properties".

The sixth tab there, "settings" will have a real card's name there, and some details in the "Advanced" section, which is mostly just video settings.

Intel hasn't ever made any 3D video cards.  The only actual video card they ever did try to sell was also a piece of crap, that was ten years ago, and it was the same as their cheap onboard chips are.  Useless crap.

Simply put, your system won't play it because you are using a video card that is not supported, only ATI and NVIDIA video cards are able to run the game. To make matters worst, you are using an integrated video card that is not supported.

Radeon HD 4770 is also a good choice. It's at about the same price range as the 9800gt.

Before you go get a card. Make sure his other equipment isn't going to BOTTLENECK a card like that. If his PSU is weak or his CPU is weak, a 9800 GT is overkill. I suggest at least a 9600 GT or GT 240 for lower end PSU's and CPU/RAM. If your other specs are higher, then go for the big boys like a 9800 GT.

Let's do one of  two things with any recommendation like this one:

1.  Either look up an example of that card that runs on a stock 300 watt branded PC's power supply (there is such a low power 9800), or

2.  Look up the correct power supply upgrade that matches to the "regular" 9800 GT, and include a reference to that unit.

I'm not yet familiar with the current demands (how many amps) of the HD 4770, although I do know that the HD 4670 has been the Bang for a Buck champ that is known to run well on those stock power supplies.

Provided that he wants to switch is PSU if his PSU is around 300W that is.
