N7 matchmaker hypothesis - Slow lobbies since patch 1.03/Rebellion

So its come to my attention, after a few hours of testing, that Bioware may have introduced a method of matchmaking in their patch, that is, that somehow public games only match you with people who are around your own N7 rating.
Out of 10 different lobbies created (or joined) all members were N7 1080-1150 100% of the time (My own N7 rating being 1138).

If this hyphothesis rings true, it has increased the waiting times for creating lobbies exponentially; particularly for high ranking N7 players.

Now before the posts start flowing in about "herp derp! You should be happy! You're getting grouped up with only high skilled players!" No. A thousand times no. Besides the already proven point that N7 doesn't equal skill, this is a terrible idea.
Why? Fairly simple: The number of N7+1000 players is LOW (Or perhaps rephrased, N7 players past 1000 who are within 100 or so ranks to you). This makes creating - and joining - lobbies a living nightmare. There's simply not enough players to be around. Tested on both gold and silver lobbies, it takes well over 20 minutes to get 4 players for a game, and many of those players simply get bored halfway and leave, increasing waiting times.

I'm aware "invite your friends" is a solution, but its not always such, they could be offline, or you could just want a quick match. Random PuG is fairly impossible right now for high ranking N7s for example that want to take a chill in silver. Before this patch a room would fill in very quickly around 5 minutes; sure, N7 ranks varied from 50s to 600s or so, but it made the game playable, and it made it fast. Since the patch, and if this matchmaking theory is true, its nigh impossible to start a playable lobby due to the lack of high N7 players.

If such a system is in place, or is in testing or an unintentional side-effect, make it a toggle option wether you want matchmaking or not.

If anyone else can confirm this theory through own public lobby experiences let me know. I'd like to confirm this isn't some sort of weird, incredible bad luck coincidence regarding this new matchmaking.

Placebo. I joined a group of ~100-200s as a mid-600. I was observing more high N7's than usual but I'd attribute that to the fact that more people may have returned to try the DLC.

I really hope you're right Edal, just these lobby waiting times seem terribly abnormal. It could also be that a lot of people are still patching or stuck with some other thing right now which could mean less players.
We'll see I guess.

I don't know, I can't attribute this to merely psychological factors. Not everybody I'm being grouped with is around my N7 level, but there always seems to be at least one player in the lobby whose level is suspiciously close to mine;
I've also had issues with lobbies taking way too long to fill up.
This is especially a pain in the butt because of lag. The only variable that should ever affect who you're paired with is latency; prioritization of any other variables, especially those which significantly shrink the pool of teammates, increases the odds that latency will be higher.
I've died repeatedly due to lack of responsiveness tonight, which is the basis for much rage.

joined a lobby that had a N7~10, N7~600, and a N7~2000. mine's ~1200. I do feel there's more high N7 around, still pretty normal though

There was a post on here earlier about this, so i'm sure you're not alone. I haven't got the patch yet though

Simple explanation, high N7s are most likely to have downloaded the DLC as soon as it was available. Matches can only be made between parties with the same DLCs

It's possible this could explain why today it's taken me longer to find lobbies... and most of the people I encountered were around my N7 level.

Would like to hear an official statement on this :( hopefully it's just a crappy/coincidentally-odd matchmaking day.

I am around 500 and played with some 100's, 300's, a 1500+ and a 2700+. Maybe it's a PC thing.

Our best bet here is Bioware official statement. I just started a solo bronze game, people joined slowly, one at wave 3, another at wave 5 and the final one at wave 8. When the game was finished voilá, all rank 1000+.

Again, official statement from bioware would be nice.

Ugh, this is horrible. I just got put into the same FBWGG lobby, three times. Each time I got in there, everyone else (there were some new people each time) in there was around N7 200-ish. Finally found a different lobby, or the same one with a different host, and they were all N7 ~200 again.

As you can tell by this, tamperous, it's not a "high N7 = more likely to download DLC" thing. Though, I don't doubt that the userbase being split right now is making it harder to find a 'good' lobby.

I'm 700-something and I've played games tonight with players ranked anywhere from 70 to 2000.

Thanks for the posts guys, all feedback is very welcome. Seems right now it could be split due to people not having DLC yet, but it remains to be seen.

Again, thank you for feedback and keep it coming!

Seeing it too - everyone I get in public games are all with 100 points of me. Not liking this either.

I have noticed it's taking longer to form a group. I just keep hitting search until I eventually end up in a game already in progress.

Now that you mention it, I have only been getting people with similar N7 ratings post patch - which explains why lobbys are taking so long to fill (N7 1000+) <_<

Yeah, that's not helping either. The amount of times I get kicked back to the main menu is ridiculous.

Had 6 matches

in 4 of them the N7 of all players was roughly the same 610-670
in the last 2 had one or 2 oddballs of -200 N7... it may be a coincidence, but...

I don't know, mine had a mid hundred, a 300-something, myself in the 400s, and then one in the 1400 or so range. I think it's just the high N7s who spend all of their time on this game are more prominent because they jumped right into the DLC.

I'm N7 level 120, and will be forever, even if BioWare is trying very hard to force me to promote. I've had a lot of terrible groups of N7 level ~100-120. I'm running around with gold X gear, they have unmaxed commons. It is messy.

It doesn't seem to be perfectly consistent; occasionally, I'll be shoved into a group where everyone else is level 6xx or something. It does, however, seem to be deliberately attempting to place people together.

//EDIT: It is possible that these are random occurrences, but isn't it a bit odd that people around 1000 are complaining of the same thing that people around 100 are?

(Only PC has the patch so far, right? Guess that explains why console users aren't having these issues.)

Running quick match on any difficulty, I get paired up with mostly N7~200 players. I got into a match with an N7 900 just now, but I suspect he was invited to the lobby by a friend. And then an N7 500 in a different lobby.

Bronze, Silver, Gold. N7 ~200s. Most lobbies I joined and left just to see if I could find a varied lobby, but those two high N7s were the only ones more than 100 levels away from me.

edit: Really,  CSMone01? Because we noticed strange matchmaking behavior and want to hear an official statement on it? I'm frustrated-- It's been a long, difficult time finding lobbies today. I want to know why.
