I've been playing and enjoying this game for a few weeks now on Windows Vista SP2. It's been running very well at 1680x1050, graphics at medium, no AA. I installed Windows 7 yesterday, and today played DA:O for the first time since the installation. All the same settings, and it's running much slower and choppier. Still playable, but it's running at a very noticeably lower FPS. why?

Could be your drivers. I've always played this game on Windows 7 and it runs just fine.

Update your drivers to the newer ones specified for windows 7. That happened to my friend a day ago.

I've updated audio drivers and graphics card drivers...are there any I'm forgetting?

Your motherboard chipset drivers!

I really don't think you can driver update yourself out of this problem...the slow downs, hangs and load screen lengths appear to be related to how the game engine is managing resources...which ain't very well.

My motherboard is made by a group called Phoenix Technologies LTD, and apparently they don't offer any driver updates... I can't find any on the website
