I wrote about this class earlier today but I've continued to play it most of the day (only new class I unlocked, thanks RNG store!!) and more I played the more I realized...this class is awful.
Lash is a fun power but only really useful with the shield/barrier penetration. The problem with the power is that it throws the enemies past you a lot and you have to turn around and get shot in the back. The other problem is it takes a tiny bit longer to bob back into cover when using this power, and trust me on higher difficulties you get eaten alive, puked back out, eaten again, and crapped out. Although its amusing to have a phantom rush you and send that (#&*@#$ flying, the novelty soon wears off.
The smash power is wicked cool, a lot of fun to use when you're not getting killed. It does fair to moderate damage, with a frag grenade being both more powerful and having a better radius. The trick is it cant hit enemies behind cover, around corners, etc. Its fun to use, but not very practical. It's a CQC power with no real way to close with the enemy because...
...terribad health. This class, clearly, is built to get up close and paralyze the enemy with singularity, then vaporize them with smash. this is great on paper but getting close is the problem. Even with 6 points in fitness all geared towards defense and HP, enemies chew through your meager health allocation like its not there.
This class could still be saved, I would suggest a damage resistance or flat out invulnerability period when using smash - the charge up time has gotten me killed a lot. Enemies on gold smiply laughed in my face and I died.
Bioware, I love the new DLC, and I'm sure this class looked good on paper but in the actual game play its not really useful for anything but bronze. Silver and Gold you will die/make your team mates hate you because they're constantly running to revive you. The class feels sluggish and playing it makes taking on two or more basic enemies feel really risky. Needs buffing. Just a thought for next patch.
It's official - the Phoenix Adept is...TERRIBLE.

I haven't tried Gold yet but it still rocks Silver, Lash IMO is almost OP; it's my main offensive power and I spam it like crazy. I forgo Singularity and only Smash when I find myself in CQC - not by seeking it out.
The Vanguard might be better with Charge but then you have to skip full Fitness so it requires a bit different play style or skipping Lash maybe if you plan CQC (though I hear the startup for Smash gets you killed in this case).
EDIT: You can aim the Lash, it takes some getting used to and isn't as accurate as other projectile powers. Making the enemy go as high as a glitched vanguard is becoming a hobby of mine.

I definately don't get how to play the phoenix classes yet, their powers seem to lack synergy to me.

I got the vanguard. I never play that class but gave it a test run to see all the new abilities. I really don't like smash. :/ When I play adept I pretty much do the biotic artillery thing and stay back so I find it useless personally. Lash is fun though. GET OVER HERE.
I guess if I do get the adept I'll put the points in Singularity and name him Scorpion.

Good theory reflects what happens in practice. Sorry, just a pet peeve of mine whenever people say "on paper" or "in theory." If it is good or bad in play, it will look the same way on paper to a designer who understands balance.

Sure, you can detonate enemies you've lashed with smash...but you get no collateral damage with your explosion considering you toss enemies too far away from the group they're in.

Actually I will say that having singularity was even more pointless here than the HA; Lash completely outshines it. I can't see why you ever really need Simgularity here.

It's okay if this class is terribad because BioWare will just buff them down the road. Just look at all the strides they've made in the last month and a half or so with underpowered classes/weapons/skills/etc

Did a 3 man silver with two Krogran Vanguards against Geth, and it was probably the most fun I've had in ME MP to date. I'm loving both lash and smash, and smash is plenty useful if you exploit it's cover-penetrating abilities. I also haven't had to worry about throwing enemies behind me because they either fly off the map to their death or another teammate picks them off. I just choose a new target. You can mow through anything without armor with ease.
But really I don't care that much if this class isn't great because it's just so fun to use.

I don't even see how it could look good on paper. The only way it could be worse is if he had pull instead of smash maybe.

From what I've seen in game, you are dramatizing what lash does. Lash looks like it does what it is supposed to do... pulls enemies to you, so you don't have to go to them. Makes sense to me.

The only main issue with this guy is that he can't setup his own biotic explosions like the Drell/Asari/Human can.
IE Drell Reave + Cluster Nade = boom
Asari Warp + Throw = boom
Human Warp + shockwave = boom
The Ex-Cerberus can't do that once you get into higher levels vs everyone. However his Slam ability is pretty powerful but the casting animation takes forever. And everything comes off CD in less 3sec. So I guess you can call that "balanced"

I understand synergy is great for those who prefer to be able to play effectively and set up their own BEs but I really don't think PAs need it. I cannot say enough how much Lash rocks by itself and Smash is relatively strong in terms of damage when used against heavies. Long range and short range sorted. If there's a long range armoured enemy then either shoot or let your team deal while you pick on other enemies.

why turn around? you realize their heavy melee is ridiculously fast and AOE? whip'em then heavy melee until you see that you killed it or just keep moving and let somebody else clean up.

But you can pull shield-health enemies. The 'pull' is more of a yank; the enemies go flying in a direction depending on how you aim it. If you aim slightly above an enemy and Lash, it'll throw them up into the air. It's not just a simple 'float' effect.

the class is just fine
now batarian sentinel, there's a guy who had troubles in the beginning. people are already ripping it up with both phoenix classes, and more will figure it out soon

I didn't get it myself, but I've been playing all night with my friend who's been using the PA. He didn't seem to be having any problems. Sure, he couldn't set off his own BE, but we decided to try and synergize our classes and I rolled with a DA and an AA and the PA rocked! Lash detonates Reave, Warp and Stasis and correct me if I'm wrong, but you have a window to use Throw to detonate Lash, possibly Reave and Warp do as well.
And I had a fun time skeet shooting Lashed targets before they could hit the ground. Now THAT'S how you kill steal!

Dude are you kidding? The Adept is awesome! It's way overpowered on Bronze, practically oneshotting everything! This guy is silver level or higher material! Watching enemies fly through the air is hilarious!
They could do with a slight health increase though. Maybe a melee damage upgrade too, Heavy melee doesn't seem to kill outright or maybe I'm still figuring out how it works.

I don't agree.
At first I was a bit underwhelmed, but after playing it over a couple of promotions I am beginning to like it.
Its pretty good in gold provided that you synergize with Asari adepts or sentinels. On its own, well no so much - at least not yet for me.

I haven't unlocked any characters yet (after 10 PSP's, grumble grumble) but I've heard nothing but complaints about the fragility of the class. They have barriers, and since they're such powerful adepts, I don't see why a little shield boost couldn't hurt.

PA is great ... on bronze. Good luck trying to smash something on gold, you will be dead in seconds. Even if it can damage armor and shields, it still does pitiful damage and has small range. You have to come too close for survival to use smash and animation is atrociously long.
Lash is decent power but has some serious flaws - enemies fly in random directions and short time of action. Too many times I failed to make BE(or just kill) because effect of lash wears off quickly.
PA also lacks durability of asari justicar even with full fitness. Singularity, well, anyone sane enough will forget about it.

You can totally set up your own explosions lash and slash both set of singularity AND slash and lash can set each other off if you take the appropriate evolution
