Why is Cassandra such a screeching, unlikable meathead? When you saw her in DA2 did you think "yes THIS Cassandra is just like her!"

I actually found her much more likeable than the militant dominatrix with fake German accent she was in DAII. Her chin was too pointed and her hair was too long, but I'm willing to overlook it. Image IPB

After seeing Dawn of the Seeker I can only blame Cassandra's behavior in DAII on her trying too hard to fill the big shoes her new job gave her. She wasn't totally being herself -- she was being what she thought the right hand of the Divine ought to be.

I rather enjoyed it. I was pleasantly surprised by the effort taken to keep in line with the general lore of the game. The characters and the plot were decent enough and I've seen enough anime to understand the extra stuff.

I wrote it in another threat and I repeat it here - I honestly can't find a reason why anyone can like this anime. Boring history, weak characters, stylish enviroments and characters mixed with plastic skin of that characters, which suggests poor choices in pre-production.

Dawn of the Seeker is a fail.

Saw this movie a few days ago, so here are my thoughts.

First of all: my expectations were low. The idea of adapting a western medieval fantasy property to anime didn't rub me the right way -- not that it has never be done before, nor that it is destined to be awful, but the two languages don't necessarily mingle well. But I decided to give it a try, given my appreciation for Dragon Age and anime in general.

If there is anything bad I can say about Dragon Age is that, albeit a solid franchise, its stories walk a dangerous line above the irreparable generic. So it was surprising to see that Dawn of the Seeker managed to be even more generic. The characters are flat and archtypical (the brash heroine, the grizzled mentor, the disfigured evil wizard, etc),and the bad guys are portrayed in such a way that one could tell in a glance what their mysterious plot is. The climax is predictable and unfilfilling, as are most of the action scenes. There is no shortage of gory and flashy combat in anime. If one really wants to sell a story based on its action, it is necessary to reach higher.

All of that could be forgiven if the visuals were outstanding. Sword of the Stranger is a typical blockbuster set in feudal Japan, but the quality of its animation made it a wonderful experience. I can't say the same for Dawn of the Seeker. Generally, I'm not a fan of CGI animes, unless it is done in conjunction with the tradicional 2D animation. Sky Crawlers and Gankutsuou managed to use CGI  to great success, not to mention Spirited Away. In Dawn of the Seeker, on the other hand, I felt it killed the dynamism and eliminated most of the character's expressiveness, something baffling in anime, a language which tends to explore it to the uttermost. In all fairness, it seems to have been done for the 'coolness' of it, and not purposely, as in the aforementioned examples.

The worse part, however, is that I can't see what does the movie accomplishes. It is not a great animation on its own right, as anime fans can surely seek better stuff elsewhere. It is not a showcase of new assets for the games, as it barely stays in tune with the latter's visual identity, and whatever novelty it presents is generic at best. (unless you consider it another indicator that Orlais will be featured in DA3). It doesn't work as a  "Cassandra: Origins" style prequel, since it gives next to no depth to the title character. Nor does it work as a competent spin-off, for the lore is barely present and when it is, it's not always faithfully (mages who don't use magic, darkspawn teaming up with golems, a legion of golems, for Christ's sake!).

Kudos, however, for the guest appearences of the murder knife and Gaylan, the Tangled guy. Made me chuckle, which was the strongest emotion I felt with this thing.
In short, not recommended.

Just finished it. I expected it to be pretty campy due to it being what it was (anime adaptation). That said, I did like some parts of it.

I wonder how much of it is considered to be actual lore though. The seekers in the Movie were a more moderate version of templar, trying to keep the peace vs keep the mages down. They actively policed both sides and seemed to be quite fair to be honest. The Seeker in Asunder was a wacko and seemed to imply that the seekers were just as militant (if not more) than the Templars.

Ah well, fun movie, nice to see the effort anyways. I did like how the end of the movie is when the Divine gave Cassandra the book and sent her out to find out about Hawke and co.

I just watched the movie an hour ago for the sake of fleshing out the DA universe in my mind.
I did enjoy the animations and I agree that they are true to the DA art style. I thought the male mage companion of hers' (can't remember his name,) was a little too similar to pre-justice Anders or unhardened Alistair but that's relatively trivial as I can't see him being a big character.

I did like the insight into the hierarchy of the Chantry, like seeing the Grand Clerics ensemble. I noticed two of them died (The one in red and the one in pink,) aside from the Cleric of Orlais (purple.) I wonder if that'll come up in the next game somehow, in a "we-don't-have-any-spiritual leader- in- our- nation," kind of way.

I did like Cassandra's character, but I hope they don't blur the lines between her and Aveline. The last thing we need are more characters which are the basis' of each other. Cassandra is a little but of Morrigan, Isabela and Aveline as well. She's got the dark-haired look of Morrigan; the "strong woman," persona of Aveline and the slick and elegant fighting of Isabela. Again, I hope they allow Cassandra to be a character in her own right and not a recreation of one of her counter-parts. If they give her a signature word/thing/look or something which makes us say: "Ah, that's Cassandra," then I think her character will be popular.

I liked seeing Orlais and the problems they're experiencing. It set everything up perfectly for DA3 and Cassandra's involvement in it. I liked how they didn't answer everything about her (ie: How she came to know Leliana; why she went to Kirkwall sans Mage-Boy and how she found Varric.)

I still don't understand how getting to the bottom of the events of Kirkwall is of any interest to the Divine or Cassandra. Do they fear that the events there will inspire other mage revolts and thus The Divine sent Cassandra to investigate? Not sure, but I liked seeing how these characters are working together.

It's funny when you play Origins again and you see characters like Mother Dorothy at Lothering and you don't think twice about them. Then two years later, they're the newly elected Divine and a large part in their own animated movie. Funny how the writers never seem to forget about any characters that they make, no matter how small a part they play originally.

Overall, I enjoyed the movie and thought it was an interesting insight into the DA universe.
It was no blockbuster star or animation gem but I don't think they put it out there like that. They didn't intend for it to be some incredible 5 star animation - so I didn't expect that from them. Because of that, I enjoyed what I saw.

Edit: It just hit me - Does Cassandra remind anyone of X-23 from the Marvel Comics? No? Okay, back to my corner.

I thought the animation was alright.

Anyone care to explain;
  • why all the mages in this prefer melee over using any kind of spells? (I found it funny that the blood mages in the beginning used spirit bolt and moslty melee combat wrather than doing what normal blood mages do and ya'know... summoning demons and actually using their powers.)
  • why were there so many blood mages? was it really going unnoticed that so many had escaped the circle? it's Orlais, not Tevinter!
  • where the hell did all the high dragons come from? we get some weak explanation that nevarran dragon hunting clans were forced to capture them but according to existing canon they had already hunted dragons to extinction!
Bleh, I'm just going to pretend it never happened. one big derp.

Okay, the movie (IMHO) was enjoyable. I liked the fact that there was an expansion on Cassandra's character and that there were some possible hinting towards the franchise's future. The animation was smooth and I quite liked the style (especially the fact that elves were not the hideous DA2 style...) and the action was nicely done. The writing could've been better, that's for sure, but it wasn't completely awful either. I also enjoyed the Gaylan's character (as he seemed a lot like the Awakening Anders, one of my favorite characters in the franchise, and before anyone asks, I do count DA2's version separate because I sadly have very little appreciation for him) and would like to see more of him (as someone else said, with him and Cassandra as a couple).

Now, the flaws in this existed. This is definitely not the best anime adaptation of a game series, that would go to either .hack//Sign or Tales of Vesperia: First Strike, it had some wonky dialogue at times and some things just seemed out of place (gm Cassandra... no anime I've watched has had a character that overpowered and I've watched a lot). There were some serious logic leaps that shouldn't have been in there and I'm confused about the timeline (as I originally thought this was supposed to occur while the events of DA2's first couple of acts were going on). However, it was still enjoyable and I could recommend it to those just looking to have some fun with what they're watching.

I give it a solid 7/10.

Now, I can understand that there are people who truly dislike anime. Fair enough, I'm not trying to change those people's minds. However, the fact that this was made as an anime is not what made it an okay (or terrible depending on tastes) film instead of a great one. This could've happened with any form of film, whether it have been live action or animated in the west instead of Japan. Anime is just like any other collection of television programming. You've got the amazing sci-fi, fantasy, and drama programming all available and you've got the stinkers. Just like with western programming. So, it is not anime's fault that this wasn't a great film. It could've happened no matter what.

On a different topic, one that I should probably put in a different thread, but I am going to say this here first. Bioware, I do not want Cassandra as a LI in the next DA game. I liked her with Gaylan and would love for something to truly develop between them.

Cassandra interrogate Varic, because at the beginning she believe Hawke
was responsible for the massive chain reaction that caused the Chantry
to fall to pieces (Varic mention this) and learn why it happened. She
kind of wanted Hawke to "make it right" by telling everybody to stop it as well. I
think that belief fit with what we learned about Cassandra in the
anime: she's young, brash, violent, impulsive and lack experience in
everything that isn't chopping mages and templars down or killing
dragons.

The investigation by Cassandra happen 3 years after what happened in Kirkwall. This is give enough time for other things to happen that cause the Chantry to fall appart. The events in the movie happen after Anders blow up the Chantry in Kirkwall
and the Templar purge that followed. It is mentioned in passing as "after
what happened in Kirkwall".

Finally watched this last night and....was pretty underwhelmed I'm afraid. :(

I really liked the art style and some of the combat scenes were done very well. I wasn't so keen on most of the voice acting though - Cassandra's voice actor was fine but I really didn't like Galyan's... I know there was some speculation on him appearing as a companion in DA3 but, if they do bring him in, I hope they change the actor. I think the thing that really made me  though was in the first ten minutes when the mages all shot the lightening bolts from their hands and it made the 'pew pew' noise that ships in Star Wars make when they're firing their weapons. It sort of ruined the mood for me.

The story itself was fairly...meh. I liked Cassandra but don't think they fleshed out Gaylan enough.

^the "pew pew" of Star Wars blasters was hilarious! So was the rushing sound that sounded like the whooshing of tie fighters of the seekers as they fought the mages. Overall story was unentertaining or interesting. Voice acting was pretty substandard. The art style conflicted against itself with CGI props, still-life backdrops, and the stark shadowing on the anime characters themselves. Did like the elves look since they didn't look ugly like DA2 elves. Can't recommend this movie because it doesn't add anything to the DA lore.

edit: other than Orlais has a Bloodmage problem too.

I personally liked it alot. The plot was OK,unlike other movies based on game lore it was consistent with the story and lore!I mean the plot wasn't anything special(Most of movies have the similiar plot as this one) but it was so great to hear and see the movie in DA lore, unlike tekken the movie it has nothing to do with the series,DA Dawn of the seeker had mages, templars, seekers, divenes, chantry, blood mages, clerics and all of them were like they should be by the lore, not like in some movies based on video games where mages were totally different, and had different morals than in the game, here it was like in the DA games. This was a big plus.

The movie was great with introducing new people into the lore,it perfectly explanied everything people need to know about DA lore.

I loved the idea about all of the seekers being noble and honest, stayed true to the chantry and were fair to mages

The charethers:

Protagonists:Well Cassandra, and the mage guy, what was his name,Galio,Galen,oh it was galian were great protagonist,oh i forgot Byron, they were great protagonist,I loved Cassandras hot tempered vegefull personallity, she was hilarus(she was like a funny, kind version of Maiew Shadowsong from Warcraft),she stayed true to the chantry and fiding out the truth no matter what,a great charether.Byron was noble and a example of a true seeker. And Galian was a funny mage, with a noble goal,a true example of a good mage.I have no problem with them, they are funny and i agreed with their cause and morals

Anagonists:Oh god no,they were very poorly made, the game had 3 anagonist 2/3 were terrible while 1 was mediocre,The evil templars who are power hungry and do bad things to all mages, they were just bad people with no motive or side story or something that made them do bad things, they were put in the movie with no explanied reasons or motives(like they were in DAO and DA2 like Cullen,Meredith they were made very good). They were just evil with no exception or reason, like a cartoon for 3 years old.they made anagonists who are just evil with no reason or side story, they are just evil, like the witch from cinderella,oh wait, she at least had a reason to be evil.So the templars were evil with their evil without backstory nameless Knight Commander as their leader.Same story with the evil main anagonist blood mage with no backstory(well at least he once mentioned his goal was giving mages power). He was just classic evil charether like from a fairy tale for 3 year olds.I use magic i am evil hahahah,i have no side story i am just evil hahahahaahaha, and we had the Cleric, she had a motive(no side story),she had a personality, not just I am evil hahaha,i have no backstory hahahah.I liked that, but she was meh, just an ordinary villan,at least she had a motiv, valid personality and a goal.

Side charethers:It had too many charethers but still we have a girl who is supposedly the key in this story, but she didn't say a word in the entire movie, but OK at least she was happy and jumping with Cassandra and Galian and then she just dissapeared when they got to the divine. We also had the circle, seekers but they were no individuals, just groups that fights. We had a crazy elf and that's about it lol,to little charethers.

Enviroment:OMG Orlais was made so beutifull,The chearethers, blood, dragons were all great to see but the enviroment, the forests and the Val Royeaux were facinating.

Plot:The plot was average, but funny charethers, funny momements, epic protagonist and epic moments and epic battles made it fun and great and I absolutly enoyed it altrough the plot, development of the story, and the anagonist were awfull, the story was meh and I didn't learn anything about the lore.It was just a mediocre story made as a playgroud for epic moments, funny moments, epic battles, and Cassandras learining how to behavae, and getting over her brother's death.

Conclusion
I rly enjoyed it no matter the awfull anagonists and boring and predictable story, other than that the movie was amazing, the combat, the art,the enviroment, the protagonists, the fact that i love DA lore and it was here (i mean omg i saw Val Royeauxthe) and the humor were amazing, fun and definitly worth my time.

8/10

Protagonists +4
Anagonists -2
Plot-2
Enviroment and lore +3
Humor +2
Combat +3

Just some things i wished to share.

Japanese version>English Version.

Better cuts, liked the English subs(Japanese Version) more than the English voice script (The English ****** subs are different than the English version voice) Character's were quiet when they should, instead of talking like in the English version (Killing the Dragon in the beginning for example)

The Art style was pretty cool and interesting, could definitely be improved in some areas, but was quite nice. The high dragon and pride demon looked wicked.

Too much cloned humans, animals (horses), clothes etc.

I liked that mages used scythes, but would have liked that they would had a visual identity than just the normal standard robes. (This as a Mage specialization for the next game would be nice and should be expand upon)

The magic visuals where pretty good looking and unique, in my opinion.

Liked the templar grand cleric romance and the plot to make her the next divine.

Would have liked if someone of the "villains" had escaped and survived to make an appearance in the next game.

The story and characterization had their problems at points, but at the same time I was overall quite impressed with the final result (especially as someone who's very hesitant and not a fan at all of anime).

The animation/CGI was fantastic, the action a bit over the top but definitely exciting, and despite the cliched tough girl approach to Cassandra, the few character moments between her and the Mage (Ganyan? Can't remember) were pretty well done.

I wasn't expecting much when I first heard about this movie (expecting the usual lame 2D, expressionless artwork and animation), so was very surprised at how much I enjoyed it.

Even the voice work and sound effects were extremely well done.

We're all entitled to our opinions, but really don't get Blacklash93's (OP) derision regarding the animation or sound, though agree in part certain aspects of the story and characterization.

Overall, I enjoyed it much more than I expected, and am glad I bought it for my DA collection (I'm such a completist I even bought the DVD of the terrible Redemption). Overall I'd give it a 3/5.

Just watched the movie yesterday! Some of the action was a little over the top (re: the ending sequence with all the dragons and the demon and flying around) but I enjoyed the animation on a whole and thought it was fun seeing the Chantry stuff from a Seeker's perspective.
Also the mage dude was a more believable pro-Circle type than anything I remember from DA2 IMHO. I have to say though, all them chin beards were kind of corny. Anyway, nit picking aside, I thought it was fun and can't wait to see if/ how any of the plot or characters feed into 'The Next Big Thing'.

Well, I just finished watching the movie. I thought it was "meh" as far as anime goes...and I watch a LOT of anime. The storyline itself was pretty good but all of the characters except for Galeon were boring. I thought the art style was cr@p and didn't really have a DA look. Some of the fight scenes were totally unrealistic and cliche. The whole thing just didn't feel "DA" to me. I think Bioware should just stick to games and avoid the anime market.

I got only 8 minutes in to the movie before I had to turn it off.

* The only Templar I saw was not wearing Templar armor.
* The "blood mages", of which there were dozens, all just shot spirit bolts out of their hands. No staves, no blood magic, nothing.
* The dialogue was, hands down, some of the worst writing I've ever heard.
* I was under the assumption that Seekers were some sort of order of special agents of all sorts, not just slightly more loyal Templars. The Seekers we see at the end of DA3 seem to be wearing leather (or lighter armor, at least), including Leliana, implying a focus more on quick and clever tactics, as opposed to the giant, heavily armored brutes we see in DotS. They're basically just Templars.

Reading all the other comments about dragons, ogres, and golems, I'm glad I stopped watching when I did.

Terrible. Just terrible.
Wasn't anime, but Poorly done CG... Anime is 2D.
Art Direction is one was there, was terrible.
Animation was terrible.
Story was terrible.
VA was tolerable for what was going on in this ... what do you call this?
I think the Double Dragon movie, The Mario Brothers movie and the Tekken movie would have been better use of your life than watching this garbage... And they are ALL TERRIBLE! I expected nothing and got less than that watching this thing. Don't bother watching. Read the DA books and feel great about yourself. You might end up on suicide watch after looking at this...

Rec... Get wasted and watch this to laugh at it...or break your TV.

PS: How can anyone think the poorly done action was over the top in this video... Over the top terrible? Maybe thats it...

For anyone who's interested @DragonAge just tweeted that FUNimation are running a survey on whether you enjoyed it:

Edit: actually having read the survey it's more about future purchases and general preference than your enjoyment of the movie...:(
