Well...ill try to be quick
My System:
CPU: Dual Core E2180, 2Ghz
GPU: Geforce 9600 GT, 512mb DDR3
OS: Windows XP, SP3
Graphic Driver: 195.62 (the lastes version available at nvidia web site), nvidia ntune 5.05.54
Memory Ram: 2024 Mb
Hard Drive: 150 Gb (100 available)

I got the game a couple days ago, and i configured it like this:

Resolution: 800x600
Texture Detail: Medium
Graphic Detail: Medium
VSync: Off ( if i set it on, i experience a couple performance issues at some games)
Blur: On

-SPOILER ALERT-
Well, i know that my PC is not "new". Anyway, i set the graphics settings kinda at a "low" level (800x600! come on!). But still, no matter how low i go with the details, i experience some FPS problems during the game, specially during the final battle at Denerim. Also, i have to restart the game, if i wanna avoid the LONG ( veeery LONG) waitings at the loading screen. And for me, this is starting to get weird, i know just 1 friend that can play the game without significant performance issues... Is this normal? =( I mean, is there another way to get a better performance without getting a new CPU for example? Ok, thnx for patience ^^

Hmmm... Your 9600 GT can handle 1024x768 easily even with that very crippled dual core CPU. You should up the Resolution and keep Frame Buffer Effects on but go to the DA: O Configurator and check mark Disable Double Rendering Targets whatever that whole thing is under V-Sync and see if that alleviates the FPS woes. The Double Rendering Targets will cripple some of the Frame Buffer Effects but you still get a balance of good lighting and shadows from the Frame Buffers but without the all the super sharp details. Hope that helps. Also if it still lags due to a lot of people on your screen (like the final battle) you should turn the Frame Buffer Effects off for that part and see if that helps. Maybe your CPU is getting choked over the rendering of so many NPC's on your screen at a time in a small space and your GPU is also getting bottlenecked as a side-effect from that and couldn't fully render everything needed from the CPU to run everything on screen. I have a hunch that most of DA: O's rendering is CPU oriented mean the CPU takes most of the grunt first and then gives it to the GPU to finish off.

PS: More RAM is also pretty helpful but I don't think your problems lies with the RAM really.

I have a system similar to yours, only mobile, and thus weaker (Intel dual core 2,1 GHz, 8600m GT, XP SP3). I use Texture on high (the best setting - go for it, you have enough video Ram at it doesn't affect performance) and detail on medium (FB effects on, VSync OFF). 1024x768 works pretty well.

I have one recommendation, though. If you don't mind the hassle, try drivers 185.20. For me they work a lot better (framerate not much improved, but somehow game is smoother) and never crashed. With 195.62 I got 4 crashes then I reinstalled the older driver.

I run the game  using version 190.62 it is rare to get low FPS but it happens at times
turn the fan speed up on your GPU mine gets quite hot while playing
Resolution: 1920x1080 (16:9) widowed mode
Texture Detail: High
Graphic Detail: Very High
Anti Aliasing : X2
VSync: Off
Frame-Buffer Effects: On
Music:Off
i have Hardware Monitoring using RivaTuner on a 19" @1280x1024 as an extended desktop along with Firefox running at the same time

The battle at denerim is going to put stress even on some new systems. The mass amounts of NPCs and damage coming puts alot of load on your GFX, RAM and CPU. If you have ever raided in World of Warcraft in a 25player dungeon it is very similar.

Honestly I had no idea 800x600 was even supported, it must look like total ****. All I can tell you is I would expect the issues you are having, it sounds within the bounds of your system specs.

Make sure to turn off persistent gore in the final battle as well which should help too

I have been thinking about what u said about the fan speed... Isn't that dangerous for the GPU or something?? I mean, i did overclock my system in the past, but i never touched the "fan speed" section. Is that safe? i wanna try to change the fan speed from 0% to 50%...what do u think?

You might want to consider a higher setting than 50% (I'd suggest 90%, but remember to turn it back to normal when you're done.) Basically what the program does is "force-runs" the fan at the set speed instead of allowing the system to control it (the reason being that the system isn't necessarily aware of the "need" for more cooling.)

A hell of a lot safer than my graphic card suffering death or a shorter lifespan from overheating i like to keep an eye on such things & put my fan as high as 90% at times  i also set it up to monitor other things,
my case fans have had it atm as well so things get a little toasty at times the default speed of my GPU fan is 35%
if you want to find out more about riva tuner look here  http://www.guru3d.co...gory/rivatuner/

Well, I'm gonna keep this thread going by posting my issue. It looks kinda similiar to the OP. My issue is certainly not the graphic card or the ram. My specs are (it's a loptop as you can see):

Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 2,2 GHz
4 GB RAM
64 bits Windows 7
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT

So, i have set the settings for lowest 800x600, no anti aliasing, all graphical settings at low. What happens is that I play smoothly for about 1 minute and then really laggy for about 1 minute. This cycle continues on indefinately, and it's really annoying. It's the same with higher settings. Graphics isn't important to me at all, but the continued lagginess cycles is making me crazy.

That said, my CPU usually gets hot, and DA makes my system work at 100%, but I guess that's normal. I couldn't find any fan settings in Riva Tuner or anything, is it there?

I'd be grateful for any tips.

EDIT: And by the way, I formatted my PC the other day and graphic drivers are updated.

And will you see... Complain and your prayers are heard. Just put the settings back up to high and everything runs smoothly. I just love computers.

I have the same problem

8800GTS 640mb

6 gigs 1000mghz or so ram (i dont remember the exact #)

Plenty of HDD space

E6600 2.4ghz

I run it at medium, 1280x1024 no AA and it runs pretty poorly. I can run Fallout 3 maxed at the same resolution with some AA enabled and get near 60 fps while this averages in the mid 20's...

anyone find any solutions?

I can play this game for about 5-10 minutes before I have to restart it. It plays fine for those 5-10 minutes, but then it slows down to 1-2 FPS, sometimes ZERO FPS!

AMD Phenom™ 9500 Quad-Core Processor (4 CPUs), ~2.2GHz

4094MB DDR2 RAM

GeForce 9600 GSO 756MB

My computer is nearly 8 years old.
1.8 Ghz AMD Sempron 3000+
GeForce PCX 5900
1GB RAM
I get a consistent rate of 5-10 FPS, I know this thing is old but any way to make the FPS 20?

Your system is well below the recommended specs and below even the minimum specs in several areas. I'm amazed it can run the game at all. Aside from setting everything to the lowest possible setting and turning off every background process you can, no there is nothing else you can do to make it run better. Be wary of overheating and killing off your CPU and GPU entirely. This game is hard on both when they meet the minimums.

Reviewing this thread back to the first, one particular weakness kept being passed over. Like a Sempron or a Celeron, but to an even more thorough degree, Intel gutted out their "Pentium Dual" until is was a shadow of itself, literally no better than an old, obsolete single core Pentium P4 (and worse than a P4-D) at similar core speeds.

The Pentium Dual has only one single thing in its favor, if you like to overclock, it will really accept a large increase, if the motherboard settings allow overclocking.

The Geforce PCX was a PCIe version of the worst generation of nVIDIA chips ever foisted off onto a gullible public, the FXes. It's so horrible, I'm surprised it runs at all. The FXes were so bad that Bethesda created a special "Ultra Low" quality setting in a rush patch for Oblivion. nVIDIA lied to Bethesda about what the FXes and lowest numbered Geforce 6n00s could do (the game was created and tested exclusively with ATI Radeon graphics), and Bethesda believed them without any tests, so the official requirements were total BS.

Most of the time in this game, there will be no text showing up in any menus when the graphics card is an FX. I think today's is the first PCX I have ever heard of working in any fashion for DAO.

Since the FXes / PCXes did not have the standard Dx9 features and functions, they had to manipulate the code using the 32-bit shader systems that they did have, which was very inefficient and slow.  Generally, the launchers for modern games will test for Dx9 compatability and the FXes mostly fail.  DAO uses a different test, it seems.

I ended up beating on a long-dead horse again.  Sorry about that.

Although I haven't run across mention of it, the game's toolset does have the capability of producing performance Mods that reduce the graphics demands on the system, allowing low quality hardware to be used when it wasn't designed for this game's requirements.  Whether any such mods exist or not, the Toolset forums are a better place to find out.
