I have an Infiltrator, a Vanguard and a Soldier save from Mass Effect 2 and I was wondering if I can import one of these to Mass Effect 3 but change the class to Adept. Is that possible or do they have to stay the same class?

You can change classes.

Not only that, but if you change classes you have the benefit of being able to assign all of your initial points, unlike a direct import of the same class where the points are auto-assigned in a similar manner to ME2. Of course there are ways to mess with that, like doing Retrain Powers in ME2 before the save that you import.

You can change from any class to another class. No problem.

But it might be an immersion breaker.

Here is an example:

In ME 2 your shepard is an Infiltrator (which involves specialist training in order to be a tactical and stealthy soldier).

Then you decide Shepard is an Adept in ME 3.

Well in the months between ME 2 & 3 how on Earth did Shepard become a biotic specialist when before hand Shepard didn't have any biotic abilities except the odd bonus ability?

Did Shepard always have biotic implants?
If so, why wasn't Shepard using many biotic abilities before hand?
Why would Shepard stop using tactical cloak?
Why would Shepard abandon those tech abilities?
Why would Shepard abandon those ammo mods?

Yes you can change, but doing so could create plot holes.

The sensible answer to the above questions is. Who cares? If you want to go from playing infiltrator to adept, go for it. It's doable and you won't lose your level or attribute points.

Easily done. No easy excuses like death and being rebuilt to cover the switch, but no matter.

You can change when importing ME2 easily enough, but as a warning: you CANNOT change class in a New Game Plus. Importing an ME3 will have your class locked - only ME2 imports provide that option.

Fair enough.

That explains away switching classes between ME 1 and 2.
But inbetween ME 2 & 3 how come Shepard changes classes?

I think your 'class' is mentioned once during the game. No storyline impact = no reason for it to matter.

Is your class refeered to by Liara?

She refeered to me as a really good soldier and powerful biotic.

I was playing Vanguard.

That's not such a big deal for me. I havy already completed my 'canon' playthrough and I'm just doing this for the Insanity achievement
