I thought it wasn't allowed for Dwarf Nobles to have tattoos, or they would be commoners? Or did I get the lore wrong?

I think its that the commoners have that specific tatoo (On the right cheek, the box looking one) whereas Nobles can get whatever they like.

Ain't nothing wrong with being stylish. Yes, face tattoos are stylish.

It's cosmetic only. Lorewise, technically, the tattoo on the Dwarf Commoner is actually a branding that marks them as a casteless. Tattoos in the CC are optional, no matter what Origin you choose, they don't force it on you, despite the lore reasons a Dwarf Commoner or a Dalish Elf would have tattoos.

I have a feeling they added tattoos to the dwarf noble origin so they wouldn't be left out. We'll see once we get the game I guess.

Indeed, the PC is an exception to the tattoo rules. You can make a dalish elf or a commoner dwarf without tattoos if you wish, despite that not being incredibly likely story-wise.

I left my Dwarf noble tattooless anyway.

He's certainly not being associated with those common dregs.

It has being stated by someone official (Chris i guess) that this is purely an optical choice. With DAO being a singleplayer game, the player is the highest instance when it comes to decide whats lorewise and whats not.

If you like a tattoo on your noble your free to have it, if you can't stand it you're free not to use one

To answer the actual question: The castless are branded. Dwarven nobles can have whatever tattoo they desire, it's the brand that they wouldn't want to wear and that's not included in the options.

I knew the casteless are branded, but I thought tattoos were restricted to them too, lore-wise. If they are not ... hmm. I'll be seriously templed to slap one on my noble warrior to help give her a slightly more "rugged" look. But she wouldn't have one if such a mark would be commonly associated with the "trash".

We haven't seen any noble NPCs with tattoos though?

I'm willing to bet it involves a lot of pain too the branding process. But for the Nobles it's cosmetic, for the casteless it is a mark of shame.

My dwarf noble has a facial tat. But I consider him rather rebellious- he does have a beard or hair :)

Rebellious ? you mean symphathetic to the casteless ? that's a neat RP idea.

you should think HOW the branding/tatt's are done too!! I'm stationed overseas and have SEEN how they do it in the old style... Bamboo splinters, ink, and a hammer!!!!!! And yes... it hurts like "heck".

Well ... the pain can be both a means of degradation when it's done by force to an unwilling person, or a test/mark of strength and honor if a willing subject bears it stoically. That inverted-colors, full facial tattoo a Dalish can pick could be considered an expression of particularly deep faith because of the pain its creation would involve.

I was talking in terms of the casteless. btw all you Dwarven Nbles who have tattoos for cosmetic reasons, I am going to skin you all alive

The really tough (or drunk) Dwarves make a mirror image of the pattern they want at the forge and stick the hot metal to their faces.

It would be interesting to get clarification on this from the devs, because it would be good info to know.
