Liara has described the melding in great detail. So is it possible that Liara pulled a Spock on Shepard and is carrying a complete copy of Shepard in her mind like when Spock put his "Katra" in Bones at the end of The Wrath of Khan?

What I'm saying is that maybe the OTHER writers wanted the option of bringing Shepard back at some point, while some were saying "this is the end of Shepard's story arc." So if Shepard dies, Liara does her usual thing of body snatching again, clones Shepard, and then implants the mind and voila, there is Shepard exactly as she remembered. Is this why no one could figure out what that was?

You could receive this gift whether you were in a relationship with her or not.

So this spells Sequel down the road at some point.... if this is true.

Maybe they planned to put something in there, but ran out of time, and went, "eh, just put a black thingy in there, it's gonna be sooo artistic, you'll see!". The way she described her memory, I expected something much better. Scratch that. I expected something, but it was NOTHING.

I believe Liara might have given Shepard an Asari "cipher", much like Shiala did with the Prothean one. This way, Shepard can now comprehend Asari, their history and their culture, and probably can understand their writings and speech without a translator.

I imagine that'd be one of the greatest gifts one can give to someone who does not belong to their race, due to the compromise and trust that involves granting an alien such knowledge.

I had written a fluff piece Fan Fic that had built on this idea and extended it slightly with a reverse Ardhat Yakshi twist that had Liara give of her life force to Shepard instead of taking. In effect provisionally giving Shep an extended life span

Hmmm. I think she was just looking on sharing a moment with you. It's a bit more intimate in a romance, but even as a friend you can see that Shepard is someone she really admires.

I liked the scene, but I don't think it was supposed to be anything too complicated haha.

I believe she was giving you a glimpse into what it's like for her to "embrace eternity."

Well part of me was glad I didn't make it to the Normandy, because when Liara starts to show Ash would have killed you.

I think the intent of the scene was what Allan here said: an intense emotional moment between two people.

That said, it's so ambiguous, you can have it be pretty much anything you want it to mean. Which can be said about most of the ending.

Might be just "sharing a moment", but why would Liara call that a gift? My Shepard doesn't particularly care about Liara. A gift implies giving something valuable or precious.

Unless the writers were forcing upon my Shepard that for him sharing that moment with Liara has to be precious or valuable, there has to be something more.

I agree, I don't think it was anything more than what we saw.

As much as I'd love more games to play Shepard with my crew, I know this is the end of Shepard's story.  I wish he didn't have to die and could retire with his LI instead.

Her memories, and a chance to bond with Shepard before the final battle. Literally. I try not to overthink it.

Hmm. "Sharing some of my own memories with you" is a lot different from "copying your essence and storing it in my mind just in case you die."

I'd happily let her do it, but that kind of thing should really require informed consent.

I think she just wanted Shep to know she's always there for her/him and have a moment of peace before the final push.

I don't care if it's mind****ing, Ctrl+C-ing Shepard, or simply sharing an intimate moment. I just wanted it to be something more interesting than a short talk in blackness

You know, I am not a fan of bringing dead characters back to life. I used to collect comics long ago and that was a favorite trick of the books. They would kill off a character, hold a funeral, and then presto! Back from the dead. It happened so often that nobody believed that death was final for a main character.

That's why I wasn't impressed when Shepard arose from the dead in ME2. If you have any understanding of biology at all, it is a full blown miracle for biological death to be reversed and Shepard was not only biologically dead, but also suffered severe trauma and freezing and of the two being frozen is worse because the ice crystals destroy the cells.

If a favorite character crosses that bourne from which no traveler returns, they should stay there out of a sense of decency in my estimation. Shepard has already had his Lazarus moment, let's not shoot for two.

True it should require informed consent, but not if you don't want the boss to know the true motivation. lol.

Well it is optional and she does imply this gift is something personal rather than material. You can just say no and then she'll just ask for parting words. It seems it was as much about her trying to deal with her nerves as giving a farewell. So its hardly forcing if you can avoid it not just by not speaking to her but actually saying no.

Not to discourage anyone's thoughts or opinions of that scene, but I truly thinks folks are overthinking it because the scene is so short and undetailed. What I took away from it, is that Liara simply wanted to share more of herself with Shepard because she was not sure she would make it. I think it was a way for her to share an intimate moment while also dealing with her own fears in her own way.

I definately don't think she would map Shepard's DNA or anything like that without specifically saying so, and with both of their futures so unclear. It just doesn't seem within her character to do that sort of thing.

Again, not saying others' opinions are wrong...I am just not seeing that in the scene myself.
