Is there a cap on defense? If not how much does it take roughly to start avoiding everything?

No cap that I am aware of... my rogue has 120+ at the moment and sometimes still gets hit. That could be the product of abilities rather than phys attacks, tho.

No cap on defense.

To avoid EVERYTHING in ANY situation, that would be around 200 defense. Many times you would get hit by -DEF debuffs, so having the extra bit to be safe than sorry.

For the record, at around 150 defense, my dodge tank still was getting hit a few times by Revenants. At around 170, all Gaxkang did was just pointlessly meleeing my dodge tank apart from a few Cone of Colds that I just quickly healed back up.

So a practical number to shoot for is AT LEAST 150 defense. You will still get hit, but very rarely. At 175, I think you're pretty much immune to hit rolls, and at 200 I'm dead certain you are absolutely immune.

Of course, this is all anecdotal evidence, so grain of salt.

My experience confirms this.  My Alistair has 286 Defense buffed, and he doesn't get hit.

EDIT:  Disregard the above.  I think I've actually found a bug.  Alistair's Defense is rising by 10 every time I transition to a new area.  Weird.  Although I can still confirm that he doesn't get hit.

Uh...how do you get to 175 defense? My rogue has 128 (138 buffed by a group effect) and I think that's pretty good.

Yeah that's a known bug with Rally after the 1.02 patch.

So how do you avoid the bug? Just turn off Rally before going to a new area?

Yeah, or turn it off after you've arrived in a new area, and then back on.

Ah so it doesn't actually alter your stats permanently. I was slightly worried there that I could cause some permanent damage.

Also, for Alistair, should I forsake a point into Cunning to unlock the next tier of Combat Tactics and Survival, or should I just pick up Herbalism or something?

Why not? 1 stat point won't make a huge difference.

You might find the first rank of Poison Making handy for him also. Stuns and mana drain to compliment his innate templar drain can give you an edge in some fights.

For Alistair, I would personally try to get Tactics 4, Training 4, Posion 1. 5 DEX ain't going to hurt you much in the end game.

As for reaching 150 defense... my Alistair is...

26 STR

16 CUN

rest in DEX

92 DEF @lvl 21

+15 champion's shield

+15 shield defense

+10 dalish set

+6 magister's shield

+3 buckle of the winds

+10 rally

151 defense

Now add Heroic Defense, and he gets around 175. Glyph of Warding gets him over 200, but I don't even bother by then.

Note that this would be higher if he was wearing better +dex/def gear like felon's coat (which I missed since I didn't know wade stopped selling after dragonplate), and a bit higher if he wasn't wearing +physical resist gear (in order to defend against grabs, he has around 95 after heroic defense).

is there a way to workaround or get rid of the rally bug once it's happened?
