i posted this in an attempt to get responses and maybe support from those who may agree with me so hopefully in a perfect world bioware will get the idea and put them in the game.

Wow. So... you mean that some people really like cloaks?

We had no idea.

Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention. If we had only known that there were people out there who think cloaks are neat, we might have added them onto the pile sooner. Our bad.

And all that time on pointy mage hats, wasted. the shame...

They didnt know someone may like cloaks... but they KNEW we all would love upside down potato chip bags for a hat

HAHAHA so true .. They're so horrible .. Seriously i don't know what they were thinking when they designed it.

Designer 1 - Hey look at this!! It's look cool?
Designer 2 -OMG BBQ WE HAVE OUR HAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Designer 1 - Boss COME SEE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Boss -- WOW you guy did an awesome Job .. It's much better than those black hooded cloak  !!

Morrigan wears that all the time. Its the backless thing with the hood pulled down.

And to the Op. Cloaks! We don need no stinkin Cloaks. They would just cover up all the wonderful mage toques and peni-helms.

Orlais may have shoe fashion but Ferelden is the capitol of goofy head gear!

Yeah the last thing I want to see are clipping issues with the weapons. How bad ass do you really feel when you have a shield and sword sticking out of that cloak?

maybe it's not the smartest thing to go around making such sweeping generalizations and assumptions about who people are.

Meh, the developers are simply behaving in accordance with the users. The community here is definitely NOT the friendliest and most polite gaming community I ever read in a forum. If the developers were to be polite and friendly, they'd just be very out of place here, considering how most users behave. :P

Kinda skimmed through so I don't know if anyone mentioned this: I think people are misunderstanding the "stealthiness" of a cloak. It's not useful in the sense of "you're not noticeable" it's useful in the sense of concealment. Ya know... hide your head/face (with a hood), clothes/armor, small weapons, etc.

WOOOSH! Is the sound of things going over your head ;)

Actually cloaks could pretty effectively conceal through morphology, hiding the distinct human form.
But I guess, thoughts like that, "wooshes" far over many peoples heads. ;)

Yes, they're hidden to the point of invisibility. That's how effective they can be! :P

A good example of a cloak used in combat effectively would be in the movie Crouching Tiger. Disguising your angle of attack but not so large of a cloak that it would hinder movement in any way.

I would like to see cloaks and horses one day in DAO series.

That's a hat that Morrigan wear on the art.

Cloaks should also make one more vulnerable to pinning shot.

This. And also to grab attacks and the like, while increasing your fatigue.

Oh, you think it's convenient, having that carpet that hangs on your back actually being tied around your throat?
So you hang it over your shoulders instead.. Great! Raise an arm to bring your weapon up, press pause, re-adjust your cloak because it slipped down, drop your shield to hold your cloak with one hand. Just marrrrvelousss!
Ofcourse one could employ a pin to attach the cloak to the rest of his clothes. Trust me, your clothes won't stay in place properly.
There's also hooded cloaks ofcourse. And ofcourse those ALWAYS fit perfectly, no matter whether you're wearing a 1 foot helmet underneath or not.

I noticed how there were no cloaks in game, and to be honest.. I didn't mind at all.
Cloaks are an impractical encumberance that more often make you more vulnerable than less. If anything, cloak requests are nothing but requests for a stat-boost slot, one which is hardly needed in the first place. Maybe add some for flavor for those who really want to look silly, but without any stats or effects on them. I'd rather see our armor divided into a seperate chest piece and a leggings/pant/skirt piece. Something which isn't really necessary either in my opinion, but you get the drift. But I'd hate being more or less forced to carry around a blanky while I could be watching Morrigans' buns instead.

Erm.. It's not like anyone is holding a dagger to your throat forcing you to wear one.
If you want to catch a cold, and being detected because of your sneezing, that's your problem.:P

That just gave me a Metal Gear Solid flashback..

BTW, why no diseases and sicknesses in Dragon Age? Oblivion had those, and then they were modded into something that you couldn't just ignore.

So, purely out of curiosity, was it time constraints, a technical issue or perhaps a balancing issue, that made you guys hide the cloak slot ? It's not much of a big deal anyway (and I'm willing to wager not much of a "secret" either :P)

The cloak slot is there because, at one time, we had cloaks. They were never actually made, but there was a plan for them -- and if I remember right, when they were cut there was initially a plan to keep them as items which simply didn't show up on your character (hence the "hidden" nature, perhaps?). That didn't last long, and perhaps the slot was never removed entirely on the hopes that we would one day be able to add it back in. Ideally, we'd like to have it. Done correctly, they would probably look pretty cool... but there's the rub, no?

Perhaps you should hire some competent programmers and artists then.  ****** poor textures, armor clipping, a foot of empty air between a weapon and your back, etc., etc.  Your writers did a great job.  The rest, not so much.

Yeah what is it with developers and not adding groovy cloaks to there characters?

Oblivion never had them either, and both Oblivion and Dragon Age have some great Armour for warriors which would suit a really groovy cloak.

I'm susprised no one mentioned the many good reasons why capes and cloaks are a bad idea that were explained very nicely and clearly here: www.youtube.com/watch

The truth is, there are so many other things the team could work on that would be more cost-effective, e.g. enchanted codpieces. Image IPB

Lots of fantasy games don't have cloaks because of the technical/clipping issues involved. Weigh this against what could be gained by doing other things for the game and it's an easy decision.

This comes up a lot in fantasy games.

Perhaps you should send them an application for programmer, modeller AND artist if you're sooo awesome and know how those things should be done. Or maybe, just maybe, get started on the toolset to make some things.

Oh, how I love fanboy justifications. Bioware could have packaged a pint of bloody diarrhea along with the DVD, and some people would drink it and then try to argue that it's a brilliant way of conveying just how grim, gritty and gory the game is.

Yes, clearly they didn't put the cloaks in because of how impractical they are in combat and how unrealistic they'd be. I mean, that's just crazy  - you let things like that slip in, and next thing you know, you'll be able to hit a button and the character's sword and shield will magically disappear to be replaced by a bow and a quiver.  Or hit another one and have the character apply a poultice to their own wounds in the middle of a pitched battle without even putting away their weapons or taking off their armor. I mean, really.

Tsk! You know what I mean smarty pants lol.

Or if you don't. Then what I mean is say the heavy armour in Dragon Age, I think it would look very groovy if you could add a type of cloak similar to what Ezio has in Assassin's Creed 2, or even a long cloak to get really groovy.
