THE ELEVATOR RIDES.
Just kidding.
I miss all that exploring....
i actually do kinda miss the elevators.
they were long and irritating at times, but they did add a small touch of immersion. especially the news stories you heard in them, not to mention the squad banter...
Tali's "I have a shotgun." line came from an elevator ride after all.

And no Diana Allers. That was one of ME1's greatest features.

I do miss planetary exploration, though I do not miss the Mako. Just about everything else from combat to dialogue has been improved through the sequels though, imo.

Yeah.
Complete ME1 - stare grinning at the monitor. Start another new game straight away wanting to experience it all again.
Complete ME3 - didn't even want to play any other games for a while.

I definitely miss exploration, ME2 bought some of it back, but it was irritating only being able to exit the hammerhead when the script called for it.

Because of the lack of time I decided to start another playthrough of ME1 and ME2 after finishing my own one personal story in ME3. After ME3's ending, I wonder if I ever will play through all 3 again.

Shepard.
Wrex.
So many choices. The banter, exploration, a vehicle (though Overlord blew the Mako out of the water), but I miss playing with Wrex the most. I almost always ran with Wrex and Garrus. That's a holy trifecta right there.
Shepard.
No, but seriously. I''ve seen it posted a few times, but the Mako, exploration, full dialogue wheels, and a satisfying BADASS ending.

Hmmm, I've always found the entire Mass Effect series to be a pretty linear experience in general (actually most BioWare games I feel are still pretty linear).
I'm curious if you're the type of person that considers non-story related exploration as part of non-linearity. I don't, so that might be where I've tripped up on the term, as ME does (from what I recall) provide better random exploration moments than the later games.
That's an interesting view. What kind of game with a story would be non-linear then? Even the most massive open world games like Oblivion or Skyrim still have a linear progression for the main quest. For truly non-linear, story-based adventuring, you would almost need to build an AI into the game engine to make changes to the game world on the fly. You would also need to go back to text-based dialogue, or build in a speech parser that could create things like "Oh, character X died during plan A? Well go see character Y so we can try plan B instead."
The exploration was a big part of ME1 for me. Maybe it was all side quests, but driving the Mako around made the galaxy feel like a bigger place, and some of the planet vistas were beautiful. ME2 just felt like a smaller game, even if it had more content.

From looking at a few posts here, I don't see how people miss the Mako parts so much. Aside from the ones involved in main missions where you actually have a road to follow and whatnot, I despised them. There was nothing more frustrating than climbing this massive rock at 1KPH only to find when you get near the top of it you can't climb it any more, forcing you to drop down and repeat the whole thing until you actually find a bit that's not too steep for you to climb.
Unless they're talking about the Mako parts on the main mission which again, I loved.
