Second, there are a lot of haks with tilesets, some excellent, some really bad... has anybody ever made any attempt to catalog and cross reference the existing tilesets into some sort of quick reference chart?

I've looked for forest tileset as well and then compiled my own. There is not many really new forests, maybe wild woods from six but others are just reskins or added functionalities to the basic forest.Leurnid wrote...
forest tileset suggestions. Ideally with canopies, but I know those are few and far between.
Canopy related, there are two of them:
DLA canopy - that doesn't have ceilings and I myself found them very disturbing (as im action player and I need complete sight)
and Canopies from helvene that have ceilings - these were included into community patch in one of the beta 1.71
Also the DLA canopy seems not to work well as override, as they are replacing some tiles that doesnt have trees at all etc.
as far as bio forest new tiles related, there is:
- elven trees etc. tiles from dont know who but they are included almost in every forest compilation
- forest platform from Acropole - very good addition with wooden platforms
- water/bridge terrain with several water color and shore height
- trees terrain from rural tileset
- height terrain from rural tileset
- stairs up/down from desert tileset
- height terrain like the one in 1.69 castle/rural tileset

- Wildwoods
- Project Q's Castle Rural (has a marsh terrain) This is by Tom Banjo, and I believe was issued separately to the vault.
- Lord Rosenkrantz' tilesets have a swamp. Haven't used it yet, but will do so. I highly recommend his mountain tileset. Very nice work.
In the past I used NWNCQ to liven up the Bioware forest and rural tilesets, but after the initial wow factor of the saturated colors wore off I've begun to dislike Chico's texture work. The scale of his elements looks too "SketchUp-y" to me, unrealistically large leaves in the leaf litter, an overly busy stone texture etc.... Some good stuff in NWNCQ, but some bad stuff too when compared to the naturalism of the highly rated tilesets by Zwerkules, Six, Tom Banjo, Diademus/Babayaga, DLA etc...
Tom Banjo's forest is also nice, and I believe Baba/Diademus has made some improvements to it, although I have never had the good fortune to play with that work.

Skunkeen (of NwN Podcast fame) produced a useful list of tilesets back in 2010. Two years later there are some notable ommisions such as Six's beautiful Wild Woods but it is still a handy starting point.
You sire, are a messenger from on high, and Skunkeen is clearly a divine being for producing such a comprehensive list, and I am like a kid in a toy store. Some of the tilesets I had never seen before, for all my effort to catch em all, and some of the others I had been trying to find again after my hiatus from NWN.
Thank you!

I have always liked TB's swamp, and also really like Barry The Hatchet's update to it. I am already knee deep in the Q Castle Rural set, it was the unfortunate unability to run the marsh up against the trees in that set that prompted me to look for alternate tilesets, to save me the trouble of rigorous use of placeable trees to 'float' the effect I wanted.
Regarding NWNCQ... I am glad you said it, I was afraid to tip the holy grail

Well, personally, given a choice between vanilla and NWNCQ... I choose the third option, custom tilesets!
