Then why isn't there a model in the male version? If someone laid out the scene so that there should be a model in the background, why only have it in one version?

You can't claim that they used her model for the background if she was present in one scene and not the other. She was way too close to that nuke to survive. The only two logical conclusions are that she is either not real in this scene, or Virmire never happened.
