Your suspicions are correct.

Even weirder then. That means that for two separate scenes (male / female with Kaidan surviving) they've added Ashley, yet for two other (Ashley surviving) they didn't add Kaidan. If they just wanted to fill the space, why not just use a generic character and have them in all the scenes?


As an aside, damn, Ashley's hard to get rid of. Not even nuking her keeps her from coming back and (presumably) whine to Shepard about Cerberus.
Atleast Kaidan has the grace to stay dead.

I suspect this guy had a hand in it:

If he can put someone back together again after they've been at the center of a nuclear explosion... I'd rather work for him, actually.

Conveniently only using things that you can twist to fit your view.  Miranda clearly has a big bruise underneath her right eye and it's magically gone a few moments later.  Developers really do sometimes overlook things. 

You mean that shadow under her eye?  Also, you see how the blood appears less visible when at certain distances? It completely disappears at one point, becomes faintly visible a zoom closer, then comes clearly into view a second zoom closer.

I wouldn't really say it's a shadow.  You can still see it on 0:28.  Unless Miranda has a right eyebrow that is much larger than the rest of her face, I'm not sure what would cause such a shadow.  In any other angle, we never get this shadow. 

On topic: Has anyone figured out the circumstances to get ghost Ashley to appear?  Do you always get her there if she died on VS -- i.e. romance or not, male or female?

So far on this thread I count two appearances of Ash (one male and one female shep), and two non-appearances, though one of them may have been looking for Kaiden.

Well, she appears with FemShep / Kaidan and MaleShep / Kaidan, so it seems to be that just her being dead is enough.

EDIT - ah, wait. Kaiden is floating because that's where he was in the cutscene. (I think) If you look at the video of it, when the docs are walking away he's not actually on the stretcher.

Edited my post above, realised his being there is probably a result of the cutscene, it's where the model was when we see him on the stretcher. They use angles and stuff very cleverly, you wouldn't believe what the garden planet in the end cutscene is actually like!

I guess for some reason it's easier to load both of them up and keep the unused one stashed somewhere out of the way, but they made a mistake and stashed Ash somewhere visible?

I don't think they ever did have any intention to reveal Tali's face. The hash job with the Getty image was probably a: "OH CRAP THE REVEAL YOU GUYS!" moment. Lulz.

If Ash is in this scene when she's supposed to be dead, maybe Kaidan is in another scene when he's supposed to be dead? This is creepy. I couldn't really say if this does anything specifically for IT, viewed objectively, but I will say this is a bit too odd to be a simple asset reuse. This looks intentional.
