I Hate Synthesis

Nature is quite magnificent as it is.
To me, one form of machinery is not so different from another, and a mind -- be it hosted in the complex chemical structure of a network of cells or the complex chemical structure of a network of computational units (for those unaware, a CPU is made up of a vast amount and variety of interconnected, specialized subregions) -- is still a mind. Why must this physical host structure be uniform for the emergent minds to coexist peacefully? It's a preposterous notion. "AI Singularity" is a classic, mythical, make-believe boogeyman. A Frankenstein's monster.
The whole point of abstraction is that the details of the underlying layers are irrelevant, producing comparable results regardless of implementation. So a being borne in biological form and a being borne in technological form have no reason to pit themselves in opposition based moronically on the specifics of the layers *beneath* the mind.
Clearly, Synthesis is meant as a choice for ppl who think differently than I do.

Especially when Joker is talking about how he doesn't use a technology suit to help him move around because it messes with his spatial awareness. "Take that away, and I mean I'm good, but I'm not me"
And when Shepard says he is fine, and Joker says "The hell you are, you're like half robot at this point, no offense EDI"
Or when EDI asks if she should make modifications to her programming, and shepard says "Only you can decide to do that, that's the point of free will"...
Or when EDI says, "It's the right of sapients to live freely and securely. That is worth non-functionality"

Are you suggesting I shouldn't go around in a van, kidnap people and turn them into cyborgs in order to make their existence morally acceptable to me?
What if I brainwash them so they like it?
Do you have candy?
People love being lured with such promises.
Don't forget your propaganda and slogans.

Yes, it's morally repugnant, but it's also just stupid. It's ridiculous.
These days, I just don't even want to think about it. Disgusting.

If they dropped synthesis, eliminated Joker fleeing & deep-sixed the silly Buzz cameo/advert, well, while I would still HATE the ending, I might find the games play-able again.

Like yourself I loathe synthesis with a passion that I previously reserved for the "artistic" use of autotuned and Protooled sequenced music of today. Was a musician for over a quarter century but running my own demo studio and being forced to use these tools broke my heart and drove me to retirement. now my favourite games developer has left me with the same feeling towards another of my favourite entertainment mediums.
Sorry for the emotion, Am facing the loss of a treasured family pet and its left me emotional and raw

In the aftermath of Mass Effect 3 we should be celebrating Shepard and his team of wonderful heroes. We should be remembering all the wonderful moments we had, what a great ride it was, and how amazing we felt in the end. Even in the scenario of Shepard's death, it could still have been awesome, an ultimate sacrifice with meaning and consequence that was coherent with the character's motivation.
Mass Effect was always about bringing the different species together. Lets not forget that Shepard chooses to gather a multi-species squad in the first game - he/she even gets criticized for that. Considering Shepard's personality, the Synthesis ending is the greatest aberration of all.

But to think that they put you in the position to focibly change everything and everyone at the most intimate and basic levels ... it makes me feel vaguely queasy what the implications are.
My family has some farm ground out in the country. We all love going and spending time there. Deer walk right through the yard. You hear coyotes sing at night. You can count dozens of bird species if not more if you dedicate yourself to bird watching. There was a family of bobcats that moved into one of the old, unused outbuildings on the place a few years back. For a while, we got occasionally see one parent or sometimes parent and kittens.
All of that gets changed in unimaginable ways with synthesis. I can't contemplate it and don't care to try.

Nice post. Also gets me thinking about how much I hate Synthesis as well.
What if Synthesis ****ed up Niagra Falls and the Grand Canyon? That would be awful.
As far as I remember, synthesis merged AI and organics. I don't recall there ever being a mention of canyons and waterfalls being merged.

I wonder if the writers even tried to contemplate it, or just scribbled down 3 sentences and applied the green filter to the cinematics and called it a day.

Get a reality-check. People with political power make decisions affecting people's health, well-being, life and death on an everyday basis.

John Epler seems to think that the endings are open-ended so that people can decide for themselves whether or not the ultimate moral choice that decides the fate of the galaxy is the right one for them despite us having no solid basis to compare morality beyond fan-fiction and head-canon.Erield wrote...

Sure. We can decide for ourselves (and have done so in many situations), but it's still just head-canon and we know it. We are rewarded with "you made a choice -- gj" and told nothing about what the choice did. I believe many find that very dissatisfying after 3 games where choices had consequences.
Endings that leave speculations require one or both of two things IMHO: A planned sequel and/or one single ending.
We're given 3 drastically different but vague scenarios. Nobody is on the same page any more regardless what choice they made. Many people aren't even able to get a solid foothold on what the moral implication of a choice means when they don't know what the choice did.
With things like Blade Runner's extended cut [sic], we have one ending with speculations and no expected sequel. With Mass Effect 2, we had two endings with speculations that we should have seen resolved in its upcoming sequel (which it was resolved by a variance of 10 TMS).
