I enjoy the DA property and lore as much as the next fan.

But do you think that, at times, the humor is inapporpriate to the situation? I'm aware that companions can use humor to deflect sadness, play off an important event or use it as a defesne mechaism. But at other times, it feels as if they were winking at the camera, far too often.

When Alistair or Anders (pre DA2) were to quip or say a line, it felt appropriate to the situation, as if they had some sense of control. However, at other times, when lives were in danger or something tragic happened, they felt a sense of shock and didn't reply with a comeback.

Recently however, we've met companions who say things that aren't appropriate to the situation. Isabela seems to be the most guilty of this: saying lines that seem almost waiting for a studio audience laughter. But, I believe, Tallis, from Mark of the Assassin, is guilty of this without a doubt. As a trained agent, she feels it necessary to quip or smirk or snark at whatever which way she points to. To me, it feels almost graiting, having a character that takes nothing or at the least very little seriously.

What do you think?

I think lots of people use humor as a defense mechanism, both in real life and fiction. Look at James Bond.

Humor is considered one of the most sophisticated of coping methods, so it is entirely appropriate, depending on the character of course.

Well , i like humour and I try to not take things seriously , it's kind of an art. :)
Besides those characters have been thru a lot , betrayal , murder , loneliness etc...so you know after all this ,either way you get bitter and broody (fenris), or try to distance yourself from things by laughing at them.
I don't thing DA has become a parody of itself , neither the characters.

If you think that humor and off-hand comments have no place in times of stress and danger, then I'd make the guess you maybe haven't hung out with too many soldiers. Those guys will do anything to lighten the mood in most cases and have some of the best senses of humor I've ever seen.

Ditto for policemen and journalists.

It might be considerred to be inapropriate, but I think my whole country is guilty of that(roughly generalizing here).

It created a mayor national incident a few years back, because what some saw as humour (in an attempt to increase awareness on a conflict) was very offensive to other nations.

It's a defense mechanism and often we have the choice between crying or laughing. It seems very likely for characters like Isabela and Tallis to always choose the ladder.

Depends on the situation. For instance if someone you are close to dies, saying "at least father won't be alone now" is extremely inappropriate for most. However, if just after getting the sh!t beat out of you by a relentless foe and surviving by the skin of your teeth, having someone crack a joke to lighten the mood is nice, if it fits the character.
