I've seen quite a few mentions in different threads about the best ending for Alistair regarding his character and so forth.  The options I can think of are, in no particular order:

1.  (Any Character) Save Loghain and let Al leave.  That way at least he survives, even if he is either never heard again, becomes pathetic drunk, or is behind rebellions.

2.  (Fem Hum Noble w/Romance) Have him become King and rule at his side as Queen, even though your lifespans are dreadfully short, politics will most definitly intrude on your royal duties, and an heir is in question.

3.  (Fem w/Romance) Have him marry Anora, become King, and keep you on the side, even though he has to sleep with Morrigan and you both become adulturers.

4.  (Any Character) Let him kill the Archdemon.  He fulfills what he considers to be the highest honor, makes Duncan proud, but well...he's kinda dead.

5. (Fem w/Romance) Have him become king and/or marry Anora and dump you.  You can either sacrifice yourself or have him sleep with Morrigan, both have downsides.

6. (any character) Leave Anora as queen, and let him rebuild the Grey Wardens, either with the PC's (romance or not) help or on his own. He seems pretty happy this way as well.  Of course, you have to die or he has to sleep with Morrigan.   (thank you to LdyShayna for correcting the omission!)

While I have posted ad nauseum about my issues with his leaving, the complexity Bioware gives the Alistair ending is quite staggering.  I love it!  What do you think?  I can't decide which one I like the most.

Becoming king consort to Anora and having Alistair executed because his existence is a threat to both of you.

Oh wait...

There's at least one more, though I haven't played the endings.

I'd go with the third one, that sounds too good to pass up. Though, I've only gone through the game as a human male noble, so far.

Also, my personal favourite:

7. - or a variation on 1 - (Any character, I think) Have him marry Anora, but make Loghain a Grey Warden - Alistair becomes king but leaves the Grey Wardens and, if you're in a romance, you.

I like leaving the Queen in charge and having my female character ride Alistair into the sunset with a bit of Morrigan's ritual to make it possible.

For my first playthrough, I allowed Alistair and my character to live and be together for the rest of their short lives. I think they deserved some happiness after all they have been through.

I'd let Alistair get to building the Gray Wardens. The guy doesn't want to be king and he's already helped save the world. Give him a rest, will ya!

I stuck him on the throne with Anora. That little bugger can lick all the lamp posts he wants now.

Or how about this one: Hardened Alistair as King, and kill Loghain. Anora gets sent to the tower and the PC can be Chancellor/Lover.

This has been my favorite so far, at least in terms of 'awww' factor.  In a romance, he never leaves your side, except to go and raise a memorial for Duncan.

I liked being Queen with him too, the bit about the common folk enjoying seeing Alistair treat his bride with such adoration also had a lot of 'aww' factor.  Hee. :3

Indeed, if you love somebody set them free. So free him from that crap and he will be happier for it. Wanting to be queen is a selfish desire and doesn't take his desires into account.

Hm, in ANY game where I've spared Loghain, Al has his hissy and leaves, betrothed to the queen or not.  Will have to investigate.

20 or 30 years is still a decent reign, IMO.

Well, Our characters are in their 20s already. Considering the setting, living past 50 is quite the achievement.

As for the best ending. I like to have him marry Anora, or rule with the pc if you're playing a f noble.

It is only possible with a 'hardened' Alistair.

With all the possibilities I'm still not at all looking forward to play through the end again though

In some scenarios Alistair actually does admit to wanting to be king, especially if hardened.

If you don't care about demon babies, then probably being queen or gray wardens together is the happiest.

If you do care about demon babies (like me), then I think the King Alistair Queen Anora, Heartbroken PC, and Loghain Sacrifice ending is the best, imo.

The whole "Alistair doesn't want to be King" is overstated.

Harden him, go to the pre-Landsmeet portion of the game. Tell Anora you're going to support her, then go talk to Alistair. There is an option stating you're going to support Anora. Pick that and watch his reaction.

At the Landsmeet itself, pick Anora for the throne. Watch Alistair fight for it.

He doesn't want it if he isn't hardened. If you harden him, he can and will fight for it.

Yes, he'll fight for it, but only because he's forced to. He's only doing it to prevent Anora from getting it, not because he wants it.

Are rumors that bad things happen in the Alienage if Anora is queen untrue then?  I'd be happy for Anora to be queen if I though her rule would be good for the people of Ferelden, but I find it difficult to believe that would be the case.  Regardless, my elven mage has decided that Zev is a better partner than Alistair.

So, harden him and he actually wants to become king? Coolies! Thanks. Haven't hardened him yet.
