Two words: Luna Base. Those damn rocket drones. That was the hardest part for me. It's true that ME1 is ridiculously difficult in the beginning - I went in with a level 1, no NG+ character. Masochism. But it gets easier fast and then is quite enjoyable, if very time-consuming.

I enjoyed ME3 insanity, even though it felt easier, because there was no steep ME1 curve and no "everything is now armored including Varens and Husks"-gimmick like in ME2.

Ah ME1 where the combat requires more than spamming powers oh and the nice puzzles... Why have you taken this away from us Bioware, why make everything so easy for newbies

ME 1 had the worst balance of any game i can remember playing. It is shockingly bad.

ME1/ME2 were two examples of how NOT to do a difficulty curve.

ME1 insanity simply gave every enemy massive resistances and health. It was nothing that better gear couldn't counter. It was also annoying.

ME2 insanity required completely different tactics from what was viable on lower difficulty levels.

ME3 insanity simply required you to personally perform at a higher level. You didn't have to learn new tactics or hope to finally get that Krogan Colossus X.

It took bloody ages to kill even simple pirates in ME1 with the Mako.
I'd blast them a dozen times up a mountain and all they do is ragdoll around.
I gave up out of sheer impatience.
it wasn't "hard", more of it took too damn long.

ME1: Engineer, get a decent pistol, spam Marksman all day long, no need to fire a power. I played it last year starting fresh on the second highest difficulty level (don't remember how it's called) and it was really easy save for Noveria. The rest was spamming pistol and some sabotage/overloads.

The goddamn Mako really stretched my patience,

I'm fine with exploring new uninhabited world but not with a jeep that drives like a recently newted walrus.

I did like the Hammerhead in ME2 though, I found that really fun to drive, I sometimes wish I could have used that instead

One simple equation...

HMWX Sniper + HE Rounds + Dual Scram Rails = Dynamite Gauss Rifle

Good times.

Indeed.  Singularity performed as it should.

ME1 wasn't that bad far as combat difficulty. Only exception I would make to that was the occasional bad luck when a thresher maw 1 shot your mako by coming up under it.

ME2 Combat was pretty awesome and relatively easy though when I went back to play it after playing 3 I kept forgetting they didn't have heavy melee or grab kills yet.

I do miss repeatedly punching an enemy.

Change your equipment frequently and try to play conservatively. None of this commando garbage. You have a squad for a reason

I really miss the combat roll when playing me2.

I'm glad for this topic, it made me feel like less of a loser for dumbing down to Normal (And sometimes Casual) on my most recent playthrough lol. Noveria was tough, and even with upgrades it was so hard to focus and stabilize my weapons!

ME2 on the other hand, was a challenge playing on Insanity, I hated those Scion creatures... ME3 is so easy on Insanity (playing right now) that I keep going into my menu to check and see if it switched back to Normal.

That. That right there.

Restarted ME1 with a new character on Veteran mode not long ago and went up against one of them. I was like, "Oh look, another Geth Pr---"

And then it sprinted across the room and beat my head into the wall. I'm sorry, while the original ME may not be the OVERALL hardest because of the level uf customization, it definitely had some enemies that made sure you knew what you were doing.

This made me laugh

I just played a new Engineer Shepard in ME1 on Hardcore (I haven't unlocked Insanity) and my first primary world mission was rescuing Liara. That Krogan Battlemaster is damn ridcoulous and that super fast charge he does coupled with his ridiculous melee damage meant he one hit killed me. Moreover, even if I did drain his health bar first time, he would regain another segment of health instantly and killed me quickly after that. I had no biotic Kaiden in my squad so maybe that's why I found killing that Krogan so damn hard. After dying about 10-15 times I gave up and lowered the difficulty to normal.

However, after that and leveling up my squad and getting decent guns like the Specter Master gear I found the game quite easy after raising the difficulty back to Hardcore after killing that damn Korgan.

There are some abilities that an engineer can use to make that fight quite a bit easier, mainly hacking and neural shock.  Hit one of the geth with AI hacking right at the start of the fight.  Use neural shock on the krogan whenever he's about to charge.

...when it comes to combat difficulty.

I recommend anyone who didn't play it in a while to give it a go again and see how they're doing - I did horrible.

That being said, I was also just playing on "Normal" - still the fight against the geth giant as well as against the krogan battlemaster on therum for the first story mission (Liara's ruins) nearly made me give up. In ME2+3 my usual difficulty is "Extreme" (the one below Insanity anyways) and I never get in situations where I'm really just glad I survived the battle. I know that the other two games' difficulty settings are more action and speed orientated, but I hadn't remembered them being THAT much of a difference to the first game.

I'm just curious whether you people might experience something similiar, since me ego just got destroyed.

me1 adept is the easiest playthrough of the trilogy

Good idea, once I finish my ME3 run, I will do all three games in order and on insanity (with a Paragon character) and see how the combat changed from one game to the next.

I started often enough with a level one character, but actually made the geth incursion missions(most of them in the mako) to level up before approaching therum.
So no,its not that difficult. But i love the Mass Effect combat for the variety of attacks enemys use against shepard and his team.(overload, sabotage, damping, neuralshock, throw , warp and stasis)

Chances are if you are on insanity, you are over level forty. If you are lucky to be an infiltrator or soldier, just spam your immunity as you pump him with everything you got.

The battlemaster uses warp..

i remember when it first came out and how all my mates were complaining about how bad all the side missions were. all complained that each side mission had the same level layout etc. apart from that the main story was great, the game mechanics were crap though

yea the level balance in me1 was pretty bad. Once you hit level 30 or so it became a cake walk. I remember doing one of those missions where you had to off the two criminals on different planets and i kept getting destroyed
