Dearest sister. How are you? I hope this letter finds you safe and sound. I know you can't talk about what you're doing or where you are, but I'm sure you're doing an excellent job. All that commando training must be paying off in spades. I still remember when I first got out of training, way before I became a Justicar. I thought I could handle anything. Well, I'm still here, so.. Good luck to you anwyway.
Today I woke up as new recruits arrived. One of them made a remark about me being asleep, even though it was already bright outside. Little does he know that catching some sleep is the one thing you can do in between battles. They are a solid bunch though, those new N7-recruits. Although I must admit I'm kind of glad there were no Vorcha among them. Formidable warriors they may be, although not on a par with the Krogan of course, they are so difficult to communicate with. The new recruits are also well equipped. One of them carried a new sniperrifle that fires an explosive charge. What an odd combination. But it is a Turian weapon and they've obviously given it a lot of thought. That Turian also commented on the markings on my face, said he approved of them. I wonder what he means by that. But what I wouldn't give for even a few Commandos..
We are stationed in a former science building. I don't even know its name or even its exact location, but it is rumored Liara T'Soni, who now fights alongside Commander Shepard, worked here for a while. Sometimes the others ask me about that and I just shrug. I don't know either. We just know it as 'Building 1547' and that the Matriarchs have decided it is up to us to hold it until relieved. Which I am proud to say we have done for over two weeks now. Anyway, it looks a little like the one our birthmother used to work at, long before you were born. She once took me there and scolded me for wanting to jump into a small pond in the lounge. This building has an even larger pond and for some reason, it feels great to run through the water when in a hurry. The building is apparantly some kind of hub for the Reapers, a staging ground. It was one of their first targets, probably because there were many resources they could use, even Element Zero. Even now we sometimes find items we can use. I'm fairly certain they created quite a few of the abominiations the Humans call 'Banshees' right here in this building. Speaking of Banshees, they still creep me out. But I remember my training, use Reave and my new rifle, a Phaeston Mk X, to take them out. (I like the Phaeston X, it is light and doesn't limit me using my powers.) Some of the newer recruits panic when they see one and just run. Since the Banshees tend to focus on one target at a time, this is sometimes beneficial, allowing the rest of us to take it out. I refuse to call them 'she' as I don't want to think of who they were. They could have been someone I knew, for all I know. They are completely unidentifyable, which I believe is a good thing. One of the Humans made a crude joke to me the other day, asking if one of them was my mother. He probably meant it as a compliment somehow, but for some reason, I lost it and threw him into the air with my biotics. I got myself under control almost immediately and he didn't hit the roof, I let him down gently. Fortunately no one else saw us and the Human understood he had crossed the line. He's avoided me since. But I shouldn't have done that. We're all tired due to lack of sleep as the Reapers keep coming back again and again and again. We all make little mistakes.
Sometimes the Reapers establish indoctrination devices, which we have to disable quickly, before anyone falls under their spell. I fear what could happen if we fail such an assignment, we still don't even know what range they have. So that is when we run around like crazy and we absolutely have to stay together. If one of us goes down and someone goes to help, that one is often attacked next. With one or more off to disarm the next device, we are so much weaker. Teamwork, that's what it is all about. But like I said, this is a good group, there is strenght in diversity, as we all know. It surprised me at first, but there are some excellent fighters among them, even though they are fresh out of training. They all fight so different from us. Most Krogan are all about firepower. The Salarians rely on their technology and evasive skills. The Humans take on pretty much any role. There is even a Geth sniper.
One of the Salarians is an odd one, even for a Salarian. He's very talkative, as they all are, but he also has connections and sometimes, during downtime, when all I want is finish checking my gear and then get some sleep, he comes to me, to talk about the War. I don't want to talk about the War. But I humor him, it is the least I can do. I feel a little as a host anyway. This is -my- planet, -our- planet. I was born not that far from here, my mother worked here, you were born here, not all that long ago. For all I know, my other mother lived here too. Why did the Reapers have to come here, to our beautiful planet? Even now, our buildings stand tall and proud, a testimony to our race.. But I digress. The Salarian has a nephew who, of course, does something in intelligence. So he talks to me about bits and pieces of news he still receives and he confides in me. He tries not to show it, but he is worried about the war. Updates are irregular, but sometimes they get through. Something is brewing, something is going to happen. But not here, as I had hoped, but somehwere in Human space. (I can't say where, not even to you..) Apparantly there is a weak point there, according to Commander Shepard and the Salarians concur. The Turians have already agreed to support the Humans. Exactly what it is all about, even the Salarian's nephew doesn't know. Or perhaps he just can't talk about it. He might even be upset if he knew this news has reached me. But as a Justicar, the Salarian knows I live by the Code and trusts me. I just hope this means he'll put me out of my misery when I get grabbed by a Banshee. It is bound to happen sooner or later unless something changes quickly. I've seen it happen to so many, although it happens less than at first. I don't know how we do it, but amidst a shattered society, where food and water is scarce, we are receiving reinforcements and even new weapons and equipment. Did I mention the new amps? Apparantly the work of Commander Shepard, who delivered them to one of our sisters on the Citadel. Wherever they both are now, I hope they are safe. I hope the operation on Earth goes well and that our Allies will come here next, to help us get rid of these Reapers once and for all. We can hold, we've shown that, but can we force them back? I don't know.
At least the large Reapers have moved off, the skies are clear again. Apart from the dust clouds and the smoke. That might be a good sign. If the Reapers need to mass their forces, 'husband their strength' as the Humans call it, then they may fear us. Up to a point. We don't even know if they have feelings. We know so little about them. I wish I could get a little more sleep. Then maybe, during downtime, I wouldn't be so bonetired and be able to do some research myself. Plenty of resources here and I'm sure the owners wouldn't mind, it is all for the war effort. But I can barely stand on my two feet, never mind run around the whole building, trying to kill those... those... those awful creatures. Oh, I hear someone shouting. A Brute? I have to go. Hope to hear from you again soon, this silence on your part is driving me crazy.
