having trouble understanding sustained abilities here...
Im setting Allister up as my Dex tank, and ive tried several of his sword shield sustained abilities, and cant see a difference...shield wall vs shield defense? do i use shield wall since its a tier 3 ability, or are hey all situational? Im no seeing a change in stats at all...Shield cover seems to be for missile attacks, but im stumped to the difference with the other 2 i mentioned..Im still pretty new to the game..Had it since 09, but never gave it a full play...currently im trying several different main characters, but get very confused with some sustained abilities, and the tactics still..
Right now imm using it on ps3, but have just bought the bundle for pc...xpac and 9dlc included..
If anyone knows of a decent site or chart that can give me a rundown/breakdown of the stats and abilities of DAO, id be grreatful...Ive used similar site sin the past with wow, or other rpgs, and could really use a boost here...Starting so late, its hard to find help!
thanx in advance

You're looking in the wrong locations probably. Shield sustains don't affect general stats. Only Defense/Armor/Missile Deflection.
Shield Defense: +5 Defense, +5 Missile Deflection. With the tier 4 upgrades it becomes +15 Defense.
Shield Wall: +5 Armor, +10 Missile Deflection. +10 Defense and Knockback immunity with Teir4 upgrades
Shield Cover: +10 Missile Deflection. Shield Mastery makes it +20.
Shield Wall offers the best all round protection once you get the Tier 4s.

...After i get beyond Lothrin, i end up finding it very difficult to combat anything higher than normal enemies...I must be missing something with combat..

Dragon Age does have a bit of a learning curve. Check out the stickied guide compilation. You don't need to follow everything there, but it's a good way to get started at least. Not everything in DAO is self-explanatory.
