It would be great if that information was included in the equipment description for staves. It is for Shale's weapon crystals (converts all damage to Spirit damage), but with staves I'm forced to try them out.
Since some enemies are immune to different types of damage, it's useful to have two staves equipped on a mage so you can swap between damage types as needed, but there's no way in-game to know which staff does which type of damage without actually firing them as something. So not only can you not tell what type of damage a staff does before you buy it, but you need an enemy handy to shoot at just to find out.
What type of damage does my staff do?

Here's a list of the staffs that I've tested
Cold - Staff of the Magister Lord
Cold - Winter's Breath
Cold - Wintersbreath (different from the above)
Cold - Enchanter's Staff
Fire - Torch of Embers
Fire - Pyromancer's Brand
Nature - Sylvan's Mercy
Nature - Darkspawn Staff
Lightning - Lightning Rod
Physical - Acolyte's Staff
Physical - Magic Staff
Any more that anyone knows of?

There's a list here:
http://dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Staves
But I was hoping for an in-game indication.

That's something. If I consult the wiki when I acquire staves, then I could choose between them in combat based on the ammo slot (thus rendering the button on the hotbar useless, but at least it's still in-game).Baalzie wrote...

I just found this thread after posting a new thread in the General Discussions section. If I had known this information before I would not have sold my mage's Acolyte's Staff when I upgraded it with Sylvan's Mercy.

Yeah, I've played plenty of video games that had magic spells that caused physical damage. It's common enough.Hoist3 wrote...

What? My one staff can do all those things mentioned (Winters breath)...why on earth do you need others? A staff is a magical item...it can fire cold, fire, and just about everything else. That's magic.
You have to believe we are magic...nothing can stand in our way

Sure, Walking Bomb and Virulent Walking Bomb for example deal spirit damage over time but the detonation effect deals physical damage.Hoist3 wrote...

They'll probably do metaphysical damage.

Truly... they really need to patch the game so the staves will show "physical" or "fire" or "nature" in the stat list so we know without buying it, etc.
Additionally, without this quick note (just like the other weapons have for crit and such) we would have to memorize the dmg type of every staff we find in the game to be able to balance our +% items to our staves.
This sucks the fun out of the game completely. In fact, I was even unaware that the +% damage on gloves, armor, rings, weapons, and such was not adding that my damage. I now have to totally reconsider choices I made based on those perceived bonuses I am not getting. Why bother with Wintersbreath on a Mage that is not using cold spells. My Primary character is a Mage with Fire/Spirit spells using Wintersbreath and I am not getting the benefit I thought I was getting.
I know they made DA2 and are working on DA3 now, but a very small patch to update this would be awesome appreciated for us Mages out here.
