I do realize there's much yet to be discovered (the origin stories for one) but I think I've seen most of the game to make a comment about it.
Let me start with saying that I did enjoy playing the game! So even if I might concentrate a bit on the things I did not like so much, keep that in mind before you flame me
I have to admit I got hooked by the game by the trailers alone. While this certainly is not the smartest decision base to buy a game, I figured since I loved Mass Effect I am pretty much on the save side. And of course story wise I was absolutely not disappointed. Not only was the main storyline quite nice (though overall a tad too generic for a RPG maybe...) the characters and their stories were all great! The little dialogues between your team members while idle alone are worth replaying the game. (Best so far for me was Allistair complaining to Wynne about the hole in his shirt... priceless!) The combat system took some getting used to, and while I believe there is room for improvement, overall it worked quite nicely. I could have really used a good in-game tutorial for this one though. I didn't start using it very far into the game. I think I would have enjoyed it more, if I had a better introduction into it. Graphics wise the game is really good, too. While I missed some of the WOW moments I had in Risen or Crysis it was still beautiful to look at, and the characters are some of the best ever. Though generally it would be nice if at least the standard armor worn by NPCs would not vanish into itself during cut-scenes all the time. (Worst offender for me here was Loghain... that was really annoying) What good is it to make an awesome looking armor if I get reminded all the time that it would be impossible to move in it in real life.
Biggest issue I have with the game is size however. There are far too few places and each place feels very limited. I was really disappointed with that. I was expecting a much grander setting than this. After playing Risen and Fallout 3 I felt cramped all the time playing DA:O. I played FPS' that had a bigger and more diversified area than DA:O. They could have simply included a whole area for the world, and could have made you walk to every area when you had not yet discovered it. Dump in a few small sidequests and more monsters and the game would have felt much, much grander. (Or course they should not remove the quick travel feature!)
As for the overall feel of the game, well, that goes back to the trailers. I was really looking forward to some alternative music during playing and in the games cut-scenes. Instead I pretty much got the 'run-of-the-mill' RPG soundtrack. (Albeit a very good one mind you, but I really hoped for something different...)
And somehow, I was expecting more... I dunno, grand things. Just think of the blue glowing eyes in the awesome 'This is War' trailer, or the battle in the mountains with Sten charging forward dropping the enemies. There were some really awesome cut-scenes (the opening battle for one) But overall I guess I hoped for more 'movie'-moments.
Speaking of awesome cut-scenes... I would really like to watch them again, I was very disappointed to find out that I could not simply view them again. (Especially after taking a lot of time to perfect my heroine...) And while we're at that, I would really like to hear my own character talk. When I chose the voice for my heroine I was really looking forward to actually hear her! And while I do realize that it might be overkill to dub every line your character speaks, at least the main quest ones would be nice. It would be really cool if you could sort of re-watch the whole game after you finished it. So all major cut-scenes and dialogues with your choices actually filled in by the voice actors. The whole game has a movie-like feeling to it, and I for one would enjoy to sit back and re-watch the major plot points. Let's face it, except for the additional voice acting this would be almost no work at all for the creators but an awesome feature for the player.
Well, I guess I have rambled on for much longer than I had intended. Again, I like the game, but I have to admit I was somewhat more 'hyped' about it. But now it's time to play the rest of the origins and then wait for Mass Effect 2 to finally arrive!
[edit]Okay, so typing your text in Word and the pasting it into the Forum apparently is a BAD idea...[/edit]
