Was not a technical fault of the game just a very unfortunately timed power cut! Ouch.
But I was wondering as I was looking at my saved data from other games, why is there only the one save data? I usually save three different rotating files on other games for just this reason. If one becomes corrupt I can go back a bit in play time and use another.
Any thoughts on changing the way your games save?
Just lost my SP save file!

The only way I know of to work around this is to get a USB card and make a copy of your saved games to it as often as you can. You can then even back them up on your pc and burn them to discs. This happened to me on my first Insanity playthrough. Game glitched and froze during the autosave right after Cronos Station. Couldn't do anything but restart and bam; corrupted that entire save, which was imported.
I know that feel.

Bummer for sure. There's a back-up service now if you are willing to pay for it on PS3. Which I'm not. Ah, well. Maybe it will give me an excuse to play it through again.

I was actually trying to back up my save file onto a usb the other day and couldn't find the option to do this. I did see the "copy this file to the online space you only have if you're a psn subscriber, so you, snoopy, can't do that" option, but that is obviously not what I want to do.
Can someone give me a nice step-by-step guide to make backing up my save a reality?

You were probably trying to copy your profile data. That doesn't contain your game progress, just trophy progress and any bonus powers you've unlocked. You want to copy your character profile, which will let you copy it to a usb. The profile data won't, only lets you copy it to ps+'s cloud save.

The save data in Mass Effect 2 and 3 uses one folder for each character (ie Solider ) however it contains around 30 save slots in that one folder Here is how it looks
66,320 AUTO
66,640 CHAPTER
204,800 EXPORT
25,675 ICON0.PNG
32,768 PARAM.PFD
2,736 PARAM.SFO
61,760 QUICK
45,840 SAVE0001
51,616 SAVE0002
52,672 SAVE0003
54,528 SAVE0006
58,336 SAVE0010
62,816 SAVE0015
64,864 SAVE0016
65,584 SAVE0017
15 File(s) 916,955 bytes
ME3 added a check that runs every time you open a save file, not sure if it can fix anything or just check if valid.
Also to backup to USB , it needs to be fat32 formatted. Only the save data can be copied to USB, as stated above the profile data can only be copied to PSN+ cloud. The profile file contains the multi-item trophy counts ie 1,000 kills, unwavering.
in ME2 when the save file got corrupted it was totally gone. Not sure in ME3 as so far it has been good.
each time your system crashes and PS3 needs to be rebooted do not accept the system scan and repair, as this can corrupt the data files.
