We are talking Dragon Age 2, right? Because none of the actual NPCs will be there. Maybe some references but that's all. I'd enjoy something a la Mass Effect 2 where the marvellous Tali reappears, and in my case would have to be Alistair and/or Leliana. Hell, Oghren would be fun too.
I'm not counting on expansions packs because it seems we will be getting just DCL content for two years.

Sure they can still keep some of the story and have other expansions covering other areas of Thedas without having to have the same pc that will keep the game interesting over the long run

Good god no if it's like Mask of the Betrayer then the only returning character will be Morrigan who will blithely claim all your other companions are dead.

I bet the Morrigan baby will either be the villain or the PC in the next game. Everyone from the first game will be old or dead. The people whose fates are currently unknown and who the designers decide not to kill off, will be revealed to be collaborating with the Big Bad and will be minor bosses to kill right before they try to convince you that what they are doing is for the greater good.

If my theory of the next game takes place in 15-20 years from DA:O takes place this is how i see things
Alastair goes to the deep roads as most GWs do when the taint gets to strong for them to handle & dies in battle and the family line dies with him except for his old god child. Liana simply disappears, Sten returns to his homeland(forget the name atm). Oghren now leads the human army, Zeveran returns home & now leads the crows.
Sten, Oghren & Zeveran all return as NPCs to help with the storyline, tell you of what happened with your old GW charator & Morrigan as well as other stuff about her. Sten still thinks no one else but your past charator is worth a damn & it ends there but his ppl enthralled by his stories of your old GW helps you out & one may even join as a companianwith Sten's blessing, Oghren only tells you tid bits of info & nothing more & Zev helps out a little more in mermory of his past love (that being you, come now, it's easy to tell his gay)and you can go to him for help on things simlier to the drawf in the camp that you ask for rumors but none are companians. Shale being immortal for the most partmay or may not join you. Morrigan & her god child is up in the air.

Okay I lied, I want Alistair in there, at least a little bit. Also in terms of the year thing, Dragon Age is named for age it is in... and we're already 30 years into the Dragon Age. Depends on how they're going with franchise, I wouldn't expect them to go so far ahead, to be honest.

I don't want to see any of the old characters in the sequel outside of them being mentioned in books and tales. I want the next DA game to be a new story with new characters granted though it would be kinda cool to see shayle again.

I don't expect Alistar to appear in any sequal(maybe a mention).I expect morrigan and the child(the father will properly be mentioned as a grey warden and no more) to appear.
They won't state that the child is his because it could also be the PCs child.(there for it is likely,their will be no mention of a royal family connection for that child).
Of course I am assuming that the sequal will be set many years after the first one.......
