She is surprisingly tough. She has mobility problems but takes no apparent damage from an ice storm. Fireballs do not knock her down. She has a huge life force so sword and arrow shots barely scratch her. Sometimes she seems to get multiple poison spit attacks and after all that, when you do kill her ten more goons spawn almost on top of you. Can't outrun her and if she is gone you can't get away from the little guys.

Any pointers? It seems like you want to begin the encounter kind of spread out so you don't get multiple party members struck by a single web. I still like laying down the ice storm first to keep the Queen back so I can take out the first two droogs but how do I set up part two of the battle when the reinforcements spawn? Also am I missing a strength or weakness in terms of what kind of magic or magic items to hit her with? In the old BG games I might have set up glyphs and skull traps but the stuff I can use here is quite punchless. anyone?

This encounter can be cheesed majorly by pulling her to the other side of the wall she spawns near. Her adds won't aggro despite spawning, but she'll still re-spawn and re-aggro regardless after about 10 seconds and run over to you. These 10 seconds will, strangely, count as being out of combat, which lets you basically fully regen. When it's over you can pull the adds, who are now all bunched up near her initial spawn point, one-by-one.

I have no idea what you just said.

I only played her on normal so far. I was already pretty low on potions and a little tried of this seamling endless grinding (although I loved it in the end:whistle:)

I didn't find her that difficult. I had my dual weapon warrior, oghren, alaister and wynne back then. She was simply beaten to death in close combat, while wynne just healed. When the supporting spiders summoned I retreated to the bridge where the fighters hold the line preventing Wynne being overrun. The queen only followed the last time, because I didn't withdrew quickly enough. But once you kill the other spiders you can regenerate at the bridge and attack the queen with a refreshed party.

Yup, I did this on my last playthrough. Makes the fight real easy.

You can't prevent that. It's basically the gimmick of the whole fight. Everytime you hurt her a little, probably at something like 75%, 50%, 25% etc your whole party gets webbed, and she pulls herself up and disappears and a 4 more of her minions spawn.

She will also spit poison which stacks and does insane damage after a while if someone isn't in melee range of her. The easiest thing to do, is to stay out of line of sight of her original spawn point, and pull her behind the rocks. That way, when she runs away and spawns minions, they can't see you. And when she reappears, she doesn't have line of sight, so she can't spit poison. Keep waiting around the corner for a bit and she will come back to attack you behind the rocks again. She'll run away again once you hurt her a bit more, then come back again etc. Rinse and repeat.

this fight is tricky, i agree. i found that the best way to deal with the queen is by having a character with high burst damage ability (a backstab rogue or an offensive mage works well) so when she does appear you can get alot of damage in before she retreats again. the rest of the party can basically ignore the spider queen and just concentrate on healing and handling the corrupter spiders.

Wow. With all this pulling and reaggroing and all that, it feels weird to give advice that actually is about fighting the boss.

However, her gimmick is that every 25% life, she webs your entire team (irresistible) and drops four spiders down for you to deal with. She'll show up sometime after to make your life hard again. The key to this fight is to not let the Spider Queen overwhelm anyone that's not heavily armored (they'll die) and to clean up the four spiders before the Queen drops back down, so when she shows up again, you can quickly hammer her another 25% and have her hide behind another four spiders.

The easiest way to do this is to crowd control, then either use area spells or focus fire to murder the spiders asap. Have the Spider Queen drop, have a warrior taunt, and apply a beat down. The Queen spider is only moderately dangerous on her own so long as she's not beating on/eating a mage; she just wears you down with this attack/retreat game.

Make sure you have at least someone fighting the queen. That poison spit is a killer.

That said, lost wynn at the end as her spirit thingie wore out and she got overwhelmed but not a lot of trouble.

I had sten and alastair run after her assisting each other while my dual wield rogue laid down about 3 traps at a time in overlapping proximity (used 10 total that fight). I placed morrigan over the traps and when the aoe web got used the spiders that rushed morrigan got obliterated by the bombs.

Inbetween trap setting my dual wield rogue would be momentum stabbing the spiders to bits.

This is my 3rd playthrough now on nightmare and this fight used to be real hard until I used traps to control the monster adds.

I'm playing on nightmare and didn't really have any problems. No tricks required. Just downed a nature salve during the fight to cut down on poison damage and problem solved.

To be honest, I don't remember the fight.  It must have been one of those pointless bosses that I breezed through.

However, you really ought to check the link in my signature if you're serious about wanting tactical advice.  Namely, we need to know who's in your party.  You obviously have a mage because you mention fireball and ice storm.  However, it would be nice to know the rest of your party composition as well.

This^.  Coming in from the courtyard on the left rather than the long way around through the rock. Cast Blizzard before opening the combat and then sent one party member closer to spawn the Queen. Just used ranged attacks and a couple of her goons spawned in but hung back until I killed her. Then I backed out and maybe fought 4 or 5 of the little guys before it was over. The webs were a non factor.

Thanks for the responses.Posted Image

What I finally did is this:

I set up my party in a position about half way around the the rock wall out of sight (not far from the where the farthest Emissary from the bridge was located). I had my P/C, (uberdex Warrior with all Champion talents) Oghren, Leliana and Morrigan, and told the party to "Hold Position."

I then sent my P/C around alone to trigger the Queen's spawn and immediately withdrew back to where my party was waiting in ambush, only waiting long enough to Aggro the first pair of Corrupted Spiders that spawn with the Queen and drew them towards the rest of the party.

My P/C activated rally once she was back in position, and I had Morrigan blast the minions with Cone of Cold. Oghren then shattered one with Critical Strike, and then we wailed on the second one until it went down. As the queen entered the area Morrigan laid down a combination of Blizzard and Tempest to chew her up, while Leliana and my P/C started pelting her with a hail of arrows (it PAYS OFF to have your warriors carry bows as a secondary weapon). I kept Oghren back as support in the event of any more minions since his DEX was too low for a ranged weapon.

The P/C and Leliana kept pouring arrows in (Ice and Fire arrows) and I had Leliana throw in Critical Shots and Shatter Armor periodically. Morrigan kept laying on Blizzard and Tempest, with an occasional Lightning bolt and Winter's Grasp, (she never closed in enough for Cone of Cold) while also healing the party members as needed. The Queen does NOT appear to close to melee range unless you move in, so she'll happily stand off and pelt you with web and poison attacks.

The queen went down relatively easy like this, as she seems particularly susceptible to ranged and magical attacks. You just have to keep busy with the heal spells to prevent the poison from killing you.

Once she was dead it was just a matter of aggro'ing a few of the horde of Corrupt Spiders that spawn afterwards (VERY funny trick BioWare :-P ) at a time to mop up.

Incidentally, this same tactic works VERY effectively against the Brood Mother.

Or at least it did until she spawned those dammed Shrieks....
