Do all sequels need to have a number after it?

To me, I enjoyed DA2 but I do not feel it was a 'true' successor to Dragon Age: Origins. To me, it felt too small and more like a spin-off into something else than a real sequel. This begs the question of why it has to be named Dragon Age 2. Could it have been named "Dragon Age: The Legend of Hawke" or "Dragon Age: the Kirkwall Chronicles" and still sold? Or is it to legitimize the Dragon Age license in the eyes of newcomers?
This also begs the question of coming out with Dragon Age 3 so suddenly. It seems to me, you would not only ground expectations but curb the criticism of a lesser sequel by naming it something else. Consider this: you named your first game Origins, so in case fans choose to interpret the next game as the true sequel, why not save yourself the trouble and call it "Dragon Age: Origins 2"?

I find it funny that many people cant get there head round the concept that calling it Dragon Age 2 simply means that its the second game in the Dragon Age Franchise and that by calling it this does not mean that it is required be a true sequel to DAO and also changing the name wont lessen the criticism because most of the Aggro towards DA2 was because the pro DAO camp couldnt play their beloved Warden again which of course they deny by citing "flaws" in the story etc, funny since those same "flaws" are present correct and accounted for in DAO but because its DAO its ok
True that calling DA2 number 2 does not have to mean it is,in every way, a successor to DAO,but I would not blame people for making that association. I would at least have hoped it would continue in the same vein as its predecessor, which did not necessarily mean playing the Warden. Believe me,I have played and tried to enjoy DA2 for what it was,and appreciated whatever changes I found positive.
It failed to engage me,but that is my opinion. Others loved it,and their opinion is just as valid.
The people who dislike DA2 might have very good and valid reasons for doing so,even if others who do not share that opinion would not acknowledge their complaints as legitimate.

It's quite likely that Dragon Age 2 was called that to make clear that it is positioned between Dragon Age Origins and Dragon Age 3 while Dragon Age: Kirkwall could be set any point during the Dragon Age century

Maybe you could clarify, because I'm seeing that vC and it looks like SA and VC sold quite well actually.

You mean sequels without a number actually sell well?
Does that answer your original question?
