Starting as a human noble warrior I have now progressed to where we fight the arl howe soldiers, they are banging on the door in the main hall. My problem is that all the ways to the kitchen is blocked (and the north door out of the hall is locked) so how do I get to the kitchen and its pantry?

You "should" be able to exit via the north door from the main hall. Once you get to the main hall and help Ser Gilmore kill Howe's soldiers there, he should tell you your father was heading for the servant's exit in the larder. That dialogue is probably what triggers the north door to unlock; if for some reason the Ser Gilmore dialogue didn't fire, you might want to exit and reload your last save.

The dialog is bugged, don't speak to Ser Gilmore, have him speak to you.

Ser Gilmore must speak to you. Once that happens the way will be cleared. Go out the door where he points. Bring up your map you can plot your course. The way will be clear.

Oh so he must speak by himself.. I guess I will reload an earlier save then.
