All this confidence in the PC sales being better... maybe that will be the case, however I will be very surprised if they are much more than the console sales, all things considered.

if pc sales match the xbox sales, i think that would be good. that would mean 900k sales for a fantasy rpg that isn't fps style. i think the pc sales have got to be somewhere around at least xbox, just based on the dlc sales reaching $1 million so fast.

Don't forget that NPD only focus on the US market. If Dragon age sold 550 000 on the 360/PS3 in the US,it's probably close to a million worldwide. That's not even counting the PC sales which are almost untrackable for the general public.

I am 100% sure that Dragon age is already over 1 million worldwide, but I think EA already shipped well over 2 million copies(Bethesda shipped 4.8 million copies of Fallout 3 before a copy was sold to a customer). My nearest Future shop had 60-70 copies of Dragon age for the 360,which is ludicrous.I am sure EA shipped a ton of copies and they are hoping that it can sell well enough to go through the shipment.

You have to keep in mind that a game like DA costs more in production than most of the other games that the dumb masses apparently so love. While I somewhat fail to see why DA couldn't have been done in, say, only three years, such a game will always require more effort than a senseless linear 10 hour bang bang game. Hopefully DA will still be profitable, I only know I did my part buying the game very early, which I usually don't do anymore.

spernus: Given that DAO shipped at the start of November, EA probably shipped enough copies to get them through Christmas. They didn't want to ship too few and run out before the holidays.

VGchartz says DAO sold more like 500k for Xbox 360 in November. I assume VGchartz is full of crap? Do they just make up their numbers?

So a top ten game isn't a good seller now? That's an odd comment. Everything looks sick compared to MW2 so I don't even look at those figures.

I'd suspect that Bioware moves about the same number of copies of all their games. They have a fairly distinct market and strong band recognition within that market.

Gotta just say that hitting the top 10 can't have been that hard this year, been one of the worst years to date in terms of games actually worth playing on the 360, worst release shedule i remember in a long time, nothing decent.

Personally i think they should just have not released it on the 360, yah they've made a little money short-term but probably outweighed that with damage to thier reputation due to the terrible port.

As a friend of some of those who were foaming at the mouth for CoD for untold months, the sales do not surprise me. I do find it funny that so many are still buying Wii games though.

Anyone know how that compares to 360 version of Mass Effect in its first month?

Whether its good or bad depends entirely an the development costs. I would expect that the PC sales should be better but piracy will also cut deeper in that market as well. I just hope it makes enough money to justify as large or larger budget for the sequel.

It's a bad time for a new IP to hit the streets. It's big sequeltastic now. Hopefully it'll gain some more steam and really get cracking.

I would love if the PC version outsold the consoles. I'm the only one in my group of friends that prefers PC.

To answer myself... Mass Effect: 1.6M in six weeks. It's a more console friendly game, plus the PC version I believe was released later, so anyone who could have had both and didn't want to wait would get the 360 version. With DA, if you have a choice, you'd get the PC version.

So this is how you get a sales thread noticed. Imply negativity. 600k+ combined in US alone in one month is fantastic. It's on track to outsell Mass Effect's first couple of months.

Yes they are. Yes they do.

That 1.6M figure is for worldwide numbers. NPD tracks US sales only. Using NPD figures, Mass Effect did 470k in November and 400k in December.

Assassin's Creed is an incredible game. The fact that DAO is on the top 10 is doing well.

The first Assassin's Creed was tiresome and repetitive. Assassin's Creed 2 is one of the best games I've ever played.

Oh, and Modern Warfare 2 was complete garbage.

That said DAO is a different animal. Top 10 is just fine.

I would be very surprised if DA:O is selling that much better on PC, even with digital download copies. I would love to see some figures that show reliable sales for PC vs. consoles and for the PC those sales would need to include digital downloads as well to be fair comparisons. I know most people here are PC enthusiasts and I would be playing on PC if I actually owned one but I really think the margin in sales between the platforms is less than folks think. Also, RPG's (good RPG's by trusted developers) do very well on consoles.

Thats over 1/3rd of a million , and the game is out for PC & PS3 too

Then since thats only the 1st months sales and since Christmas is this month I think that everything gets extra good sales during December right?

In time the game will obviously be a Platinum hit game

I mean what do you expect? This is the 1st title in its series , over 1/3rd of a million in 1 month is amazing sales tbh

Modern Warfare 2 was an epic failure, wonder how much they paid GS to get an 8.5 rating. I thought Borderlands completely blew it away, but then again I am an RPG nut, I must have RPG elements even when I am playing shooter.

Oh boy you get to be a guy with some ****ing guns and shoot people over and over and over and over in different various desert setting areas , (sarcasm) how delightful and totally non repetitive! (Sarcasm)

Someone above me put it perfectly.

If you want a good RPG nowadays, you get it for the PC. I hate to stereotype but alot of console gamers don't have the attention span for an immersive RPG like this. They prefer FPS' and sports games.

That was actually quite stereotypical and pretty off. A lot of people I know have played Mass Effect and Oblivion and Fallout 3 for example. While a lot of people I know also only play FPS on the PC. A lot of PC gamers wouldn't have the attention span to play an RPG either, to be quite honest. I think it's fair to assume there are a lot of people will little attention spans on both PC and consoles. In all truth though, most people I know that don't play RPGs are younger, like my little brother. He played Mass Effect for 30 minutes and he was done.... Sad. He played Dragon Age: Origins as a human noble and stopped playing after he got his dog... sad...  sad... sad.... Anyway, I'm just saying that there's plenty of people on both consoles and PC that have short attention spans. To say that consoles have a lot of people who couldn't play an RPG for ten minutes, while not even mentioning PC gamers who wouldn't play PC RPGs, is kind of uncool. It sort of insinuates (did I spell that right??? lol) that console gamers are either: stupid, kiddies, or have ADHD. You don't believe that do you? I know you didn't mean it that way, it's your honest opinion from what you've seen, but let me assure you it isn't true. Sure there are lots of people who couldn't, and lots who could.

Wow, sorry for the big*** response. I hope I didn't rant. BTW, being in the top 10 is good for the console seeing as the PC was, after all, the main attraction.

The now sales numbers are important. But for future trends,

Call of Duty series trending down for the first time in like six consecutive games. Not in sales, but in quality.

One thumb down.

Assassin's Creed. Great idea turns into great game.

Two thumbs up.

Dragon Age. Great core game, deep characters, fun new world. But it has a deep customization system with no documentation making it a blundering mess for first time users.

One thumb up.

These three ratings only for consoles and represent only the expectations for the future souls of these franchises.

None of the games listed above DAO are RPGs. Shows you how very clearly the preferences of console gamers.

Most console gamers prefer fast-paced games. They just want to pick a game up and start shooting.

Everyone also seems to keep forgetting, it's November. The month before one of the biggest spending months, you know, that whole Christmas thing.

I think after New Years DAO will be sitting pretty.

And MW2 is great (multiplayer anyway).

RPGs generally have never sold as well as other genres so the fact Dragon Age was ranked 9th and represented a fraction of the total video game sales doesn't surprise me. Mass Effect did, I believe, about 450K units sold for the 360 and Fallout 3 was about 320K when they were released so this falls about in line.

DAO on consoles is already a profit in EA's eyes, and that is all that matters. Just because DAO doesn't outsell Call of Duty, does it mean EA will axe Bioware or force it to start making shooter games? Of course not!
All EA cares is that Bioware continues to make A+ games and monopolize the RPG (and grab a huge chunk of the MMO market in the future with SWTOR)
Bioware is one of the few "Ace" studios under EA so they get a lot of leverage. Have you seen the voice acting cast for Mass Effect 2? (it's now in the Gamespot headlines) If that doesn't scream BIG BUDGET I don't know what does.
EA has a bunch of companies to compete in the other categories for them. They are obviously looking to dethrone Call of Duty with their own Medal of Honor games.
