For the record, the Wii can play all of the Gamecube games.  I've never seen a failure.

Friend drops by your apartment. Lets see what happens.

"Hey, guy I might have sex with, what are you playing?"
"Hey, girl I hope I might one day have sex with, I'm playing Dragon Age!"
"You're... playing with dragons? Wait, is that girl you? Why do you have giant boobs?"

OR

"Hey, guy who I am considering having intercourse with, what are you playing?"
"Modern Warfare."
"OH. Let me go get undressed then."

Trust me, I've lived through both scenarios (my memory might be a little shaky on that last one, but nobody's perfect) and it's a lot easier to tell a chick you're playing Modern Warfare.

FPS - the modern aprhodisiac?

Uhm, no.

Honestly, play whichever system you like, whatever games you like.  But I do so grow bored with all the "at least on my console I can sit in a comfy chair" and "with a console the game works when I stick it in."  Because no one has a console attached to a bad tv in front of a rickety chair, no one has a super-comfortable chair in front of their PC, no consoles are ever released with hardware errors (or shortages - or long lines of waiting), and no PC games are just stick in the disc and play.

But those are the real reasons why those individuals choose to play on their consoles.  It is not like those console owners are telling you how you should play.  On the other hand, these threads are constantly dragged down due to PC gamers who seem obsessed with telling others what choices they should make.

I've got a PC.  I've got consoles. If I want to be more comfortable when I play a game, I choose a console.  Not because "no one has a console attached to a bad tv in front of a rickety chair, no one has a super-comfortable chair in front of their PC", but because MY console set-up is mroe confortable than MY PC setup.

Ok, the games from 2001 forward work with the Wii?  That's good.

How about the 64 games?  SNES?  NES?

I can (and have installed and play) games that game out in the 70's on my computer.
Oh, and emulators that play NES and SNES games, too.:innocent:

"I only watch the crappy black & white 13" tv when I'm watching tv to relax."
"But you have that 60" LED, don't you?"
"It's set up in my conference room when I do business presentations.  Those chairs are horrible.  My black & white is on a stand in front of my bed, so I can lay back and relax."

Seriously?

"Why is the Prius outselling this gas-guzzler SUV during high gas prices?"
"Well, gas is costing a lot right now, and the Prius gets higher mileage, so if you want to save money you should..."
"Gah, in these threads about car sales why does every hybrid owner have to go on and on about how they get good gas mileage."

Seriously?

I saw many people asking how well DA did sales wise. Here is a report for the month of November. Keep in mind, this does not represent any PC sales, which presumably (hopefully) are selling better.

1) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (360) / Activision / 4,200,000
2) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (PS3) / Activision / 1,870,000
3) New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Wii) / Nintendo / 1,390,000
4) Assassin's Creed II (360) / Ubisoft / 794,700
5) Left 4 Dead 2 (360) / Electronic Arts / 744,000
6) Wii Sports Resort (Wii) / Nintendo / 720,200
7) Wii Fit Plus (Wii) / Nintendo / 679,000
8) Assassin's Creed II (PS3) / Ubisoft / 448,400
9) Dragon Age: Origins (360) / Electronic Arts / 362,100
10) Mario Kart Wii (Wii) / Nintendo / 315,000

This surprised me. Assassin's Creed is mostly a consol game, but even still I did not expect it to sell so much better than DAO. And Assassin's Creed was released on Nov 17, while DAO was released on Nov 3; it had 2 more weeks of sales.

edit: always nice when none of the script works on this &^*^& website, and everything has huge spaces.

That is 22 million in revenue in one month for one game on one system. They prob made another 10 on PS3 and over 30 - at least - on the PC... so they raked in 70+ million dollars from DAO in November alone... I wish I could make something that made money like that

Imagine how much they'll make in January and Feburary with ME2... I am a poor man

How much does a 'Mature' rating affect console sales, especially in holiday season?

Are parents more likely to pick up Mario Bunnies than Pulp Action?

That's the revenue retailers take for charging $60 per game. Only a percentage of those dollars is allocated to Bioware as revenue. I'm not sure what the publisher's cut is, either (though it doesn't really matter since the pub owns the dev.)

A game developer needs to get funded. This works very much like the book business where you get an advance against future profits/earnings - royalties this is called.. For argument's sake, let's say you get 20 million US dollars to make Dragon Age: Origins from EA (or Microsoft or some other publisher). Let's say the game sells for 50 US dollars. As a developer, you don't get 50 US dollars pr. sold SKU. If you're lucky you get maybe like 5 or 10 US dollars. Let's say, again for argument's sake that you get 10 US dollars; you'll need to sell 2 million times copies of the game, or at least ship two million copies of the game, because this is when the publishing houses and the devs. are paid, As 2 million times 10 US dollars = 20 million US dollars. Now you can repay the publishing house. And after this, the devs. start making money. Or rather the company does.

That's why games today needs to appeal to another market than games did 10 years ago; a game which sold about 400,000-600,000 copies were considered a (big) succes in those days.

In the top ten and not doing well. Not this reasoning again.

"Jurassic Park bombed. What a fail. It's only the 12th highest grossing film of all time, and it came out four years before number 1 Titanic but even with a 4 year head-start Jurassic Park did only half the box office. FAIL."

Seriously? Do you think the makers of Assassin's Creed 2 are sensing failure because MW2 over quadrupled their sales?

I would like to take the time to correct your citing titanic as number 1, inflation adjusted prices show Gone with the Wind as #1.   Titanic is #6 and Jurassic Park #17.  Dollars are pretty meanless unless you level the scale with inflation adjustment.

And top 10 with the console is pretty excellent.

Sorry, I just referred to the dozens of lists online that give it number one - adjusted, yes, Gone With the Wind is number one.

Does that make my point invalid?

Do you think Steven Spielberg is crying because, in adjusted dollars, Gone With The Wind doubled the adjusted take of Jurassic Park?  Does that make Jurassic Park, 17 on adjusted, a flop?

The point is the same - you just nipicked about "actual" versus "adjusted."

Well, that one went right over your head.  Let's try again.  I'll fix your hypothetical discussion for you.

"I enjoy playing games on my 60" TV on my confortable couch."
"But you have that 60" LED, in your confrence room, don't you?"
"No.  In fact, you have no idea what my set up is, nor can I understand why you would be so obsessed with my gaming choices."
"People who have consoles are immature!  I need to run to a a video game forum to tell everyone what a grown up I am!"

or

"The Prius is in high demand do to high gas prices."
"I only drive the Civic hybrid, and anyone who does differently is a stupid child."
"Why do discussion of hybrid sales have so many Civic owners obsessed with what other people drive?"

Seriously.  I don't care at all what platform you use to game.  Or if you game at all.  But at least be comfortable enough in your decision that you don't feel the need to insult others who make different decisions based on their own lives.  Why is it we can't have even one thread about the console version without a half dozen trolls presuming to know why console users have chosen to use consoles?

Name calling and setting up strawmen- see, referring to people as trolls who have been contributing to this thread and not just coming in to set flame-bait (like, really, the OP arguably did).

I never called you a name, stop attacking people even if they claim their PC is better than your console. And I never once called console gamers immature, but you are attributing that to me. That's grounds for moderation, you know? You could even get this thread locked.

You got upset because I said I was tired of the "console gaming is more comfy" argument. The argument is not a direct correlation - where a PC or console is set up is not dependent on it being a console or PC. I have my laptop set up with a large-screen monitor and wireless controls in my family's rec room, and you couldn't get more comfortable at it. It's hooked up to the same screen my 360 uses. The only difference in "comfort" is controller versus keyboard and mouse. The argument from "comfort of gaming environment" is one that has nothing to do with the console or the PC and only with where and how people choose to set their equipment.

You also got upset about people bringing up the PC version in a thread that is about console sales being "bad" (or so the OP states) - and its only natural to ask why the 360 sells better than the PS3 for version of this game and to speculate how PC sales will be.

We both say we don't care what people use to play games - let's end on the note that we agree there, shall we, and let the thread remain unlocked?

Anyone know how that compares to 360 version of Mass Effect in its first month?

To answer myself... Mass Effect: 1.6M in six weeks. It's a more console friendly game, plus the PC version I believe was released later, so anyone who could have had both and didn't want to wait would get the 360 version. With DA, if you have a choice, you'd get the PC version.

Source

Mass Effect 2 did those numbers the first week.

I bought DA on the 360 and wouldn't play it any other way.

VG Charts has Dragon Age at 1.31 million world wide...

http://www.vgchartz....3505&region=All

Good numbers whatever way you look at it. Unless you have a targets sheet in front of you, heh.

edit - sorry that was 360 only... PS3 is 0.62m, and there is no data for the PC.  But I'd take all that with a pinch of salt, the data is usually rough and possibly out of date.  So over 1.93m in total.  :)

Shouldn't that be "major malfunction"? :P

But yeah, sorry about that - saw the article, figured it might be interesting, searched for "sales figures" in the forum, saw a discussion about it, didn't notice the date.

My apologies if this has ruined your year.
