I know the good folks at Bioware mention gryphons that were once used by the Grey Wardens have become extinct but there is no explanation for the absence of horses. Where are they?

Are horses buried in the great dark beyond next to Jimmy Hoffa and multiplayer?

Well you gotta admit it makes no sense to exclude them. I'm not saying you need elves riding unicorns or something but at least have horses.

Then why not just say the Mubari hounds are extinct too?

Why exactly does the game NEED horses?

Not for player movement, since the Hero and party move from location to location via the map, which while not being quite as "explorer" friendly as having horses and a free roaming setup, works fairly well to keep the player from doing a Morrowind. (Wandering off into the wilderness and spending hours of game time doing naff all and wondering where the plot went...).

Its not that kind of game.

What area of the game was so big that you had to have horses to get from one area to the next again?

Horses a smelly, ugly creatures that just get in the way when dungeoneering.

Come on, the challenge has been issued, which part of the game would be improved enough to warrant the time needed to implement them? As an added task you can also look up the other massive thread where the developers explain why they aren't in the game.

You don't necessarily need horses with the travel system in DA. But it just adds another layer of realism to a world if you can see a group of horses stabled at Ostagar or travelers on horseback when wandering around Denerim.

It's a quiet day in the maleficarum household. Papa bloodmage has come back from work and mama bloodmage is boiling some stew. But what's that!? A rapping at the door... lil' Johnny bloodmage opens the door and through it crashes four adventureres mounted on horseback swords unsheathed and bows strung.

Sure it's cramped in there but AT LEAST WE HAVE FREAKIN' HORSES!

Loghain masterminded some treacherous scheme to make gryphons betray horses and hunt them to extinction.

*sigh* Since apparently the search function is broken.

They didn't add horses because of the huge build and animation requirements, and because it wouldn't inherently add anything to gameplay. They meant to take out the various horsey references, but they slipped through the cracks.
