I'm striking a blow for the big swords. (That didn't sound right.)
In most threads about twohanders you always get to see of  "2hs suck, duel-weld (they always spell it wrong) is best". As a long time enthusiast of the conan/braveheart style fighters I gotta say the  two-handed weapon warrior is really nice in this game and damn fun to play, over time they probably do less damage than those precious lolual-wielders but the burst and shock factor is where it should be.
Put all points in strength (10 points in strength = 11 strength for 2h weapons) and then willpower as 2nd priority, FORGET DEXTERITY, unless you find a twohanded dagger.

!!!Don't use Precise Striking unless you're fighting with an attack debuff on you.!!! It seems much more useful for a dual wielder overall and shouldn't be activated all the time but sparsly.
Bravery, Death Blow, Rally, Powerful Swings, Berserk, Indomitable and a mage Haste on party and prepare for mayhem. You can stunlock enemies while you rip them apart. Or sweep across a group sending them all flying like paper dolls. Posted Image
Another point!!!! (i think anyway, i might be wrong. Tell me if I am.)
Armor is a flat value in this game, as in 35 armor reduces all physical damage done to you by ... 35? Right? Well what I'm thinking is:
A simple  low level example. A 1h weapon user does 4 swings x 20dmg (before armor) on an enemy with 15 armor = 20 damage done overall.
A two-handed warrior does 2 swings x 35 dmg (before mitigation) on an enemy with 15 armor = 40 damage done overall...
Not counting runes or armor penetration in this, but anyway its a point to make if its true, I could be wrong.

I also have to point out that one of the craziest burst damage bosses in the game has a big sword and the sunder armor and destroyer abilities. That made me feel happy for the William Wallace wannabes of the world hehe. Posted Image

Sten was my go-to 2H monster in one of my playthroughs.

I was playing the classic tank and I had kitted Sten out with some of the best stuff (including his sword).

It was awesome, he hits soo hard!

Combat was me running up to the group of mobs, whacking them once with my 'enchanted up-the-A sword' then moving to the next guy. Sten was setup to attack my targets and it literally took one hit from me and one from Sten and the target would go down.

We would totally tear through mobs with this setup. It was also very enjoyable since we were always on the move. I didn't have to stop to kill something, I would just hit it once (which would activate Sten's tactic to attack it) shave off some of its health and Sten would come in and finish it off.

Don't let the guys who scream "2H is useless" fool you. 2H is awesome! True, it plays differently compared to dual wield, but that is a good thing.

And don't forget all the stuns and knockdowns you have in 2H, there is some serious battle control right there. Add a grandmaster paralyze rune to the 2H and you are looking at a dude that kills things in 1-2 hits and when he's not gibbing stuff, he is totally locking the the target down.

There will always be powerplayers/math wizards who wil ltel lyou whats the best way to play.

Dont listen to them, play the way you want.

I play for fun, not to be 2.34% better.

I like all styles of combat myself.

I wouldn't really call them "wizards" if they are too stupid to realize that DPS min-maxing is pointless in a non-competative, single player only game.

Why wouldnt you have precise striking on permanently? I've read somewhere its only like a -10% attack speed debuff, hardly anything to fuss over for the increased crit and attack rating.

Two-handed does seem weak in the long run, but it's still damn fun.

I wouldn't really call it weak.

Decimating the enemy with quick 2 handed weapon hits for 130+ damage, resisting their knockbacks, and watching waves of them go flying after a sweep isn't really my interpretation of weak...nor is trouncing elite bosses in a couple of minutes :D

Two-handed warriors are my absolute favorite in Dragon Age. I don't care what damage they do, I have a blast playing them. I've tried all three main classes and a few sub-classes and I keep going back to my 2-hander.

I'm actually playing a dual-wield warrior right now. It's true, that character dices up darkspawn like they were carved out of warm butter. But he's not half as fun to play.

I'm glad that I'm not a loner lunatic that loves big swords! Definitely the most fun for me to play! I'm kinda sad that I'll eventually end this 3rd run (first one was incomplete though) and I would have to retire my char. Or, after 2 runs with a zerker/champ... I might try an evil templar/reaver! hehehe

Not with the same char name again as I've already lost first full run screenies 'cause of that... aw well, I already lost all this NM run too when I uninstalled the stand alone character creator... gladly some of them are online.

You get cool points playing 2H. That's all you need :wizard:
I mean just look at the trailers, the main character looks so badass wielding his 2H sword, there is no need to buff them further :)

Then you might create a "DW 4 life" thread and leave us with the illusion that we are cool!

Dual weilders don't get a stun unless they are rogues, but they get a sweep and whirlwind.
Armor is a flat value, which does benifit 2h, but runes and any other +dmg that gets applied per hit benifits dual weilding more.  With armor penetration the mechanical advantage probably goes to dual weilding.
My oppinion is that dual weilding is better, but if you're going to dual weild it makes a lot more sense to be a rogue.  The great (and under estimated) thing about 2h is that you don't need to worry about multiple stats and will always be able to equip the heaviest armors.  The true strength of 2h is the ability to off tank pretty well, especialy with imunity to knockdown.

From my experience DW sucks balls as a warrior. 2h is so far superior simply because of the fact you only need to stack Strength. DW you need to stack 3 attributes, and still maintain a good Strength score to deal enough damage.

i tried to, really, but combat is boring because the animation is horrifically slow. if it could one-hit a white by level 12 i'd reconsider it, otherwise the rest of my squad is just laughing at me (or sten or oghren) while they get 90% of the kills.

they are good against bosses. otherwise, meh.

Ahh but do whirlwinds/sweeps with those dinky little toy swords send people flying around helplessly? Didn't think so! Posted Image
Hehe, I have a dwarf rogue wich I'm going to play when I finish the first playthrough. Now that daggers are fixed it will be interesting. But I definately will miss seeing "INDOMITABLE" pop up above my characters head.  What could be more badass than that? "Momentum" just doesn't demand the same respect.

Good to see so many cleaver brothers out there by the way.  May the cleave be with you, always.

Precise Striking isn't worth it unless you have massive trouble hitting an enemy. Otherwise it's just 40 Upkeep and 5% Fatigue for no net benfit at all(higher accuracy and lower attack speed cancel each other out unless you miss like half the time basically). Most stances are pretty situational(the whole point of having several to choose from) and there are very few that I'd say are consistently useful in every situation to the point where it's woth it to keep them on permanently.

The amount of crit it gives is useful in every situation, especially when you consider stamina becomes endless later on in the game, allowing you to spam talents, some that hit multiple enemies and some that hit twice (on short cooldowns I might add). You may not choose to have it on all the time...perhaps leave it off for a mighty blow/crit strike, then switch it on and blow through your other talents. Still, you'll want to use it, especially if you're running blood thirst/haste together.

Aproximately 2392 damage dealt  in my solo Gataxan NM attempt... the one I stood alive in the end that is... only possible with Powerful Swings, Precise Striking, Berserker and Rally activated... P.Striking is a great talent! The amount of crits I got is impressive, I guess. And I got a lucky break too. After many failed attempts, 3 paralyse hits in a sequence. Two handers are awesome!

Sometimes I wish we had our good old combat window back in this game but then I'd hate to read the "Immune to Critical Hits" thing! I so much hated that!

This is clearly someone who knows very little about a DW warrior.  I'm all for people playing the game the way they want.  The game is not difficult enough to warrant min/maxing.  But don't start throwing out total lies like this.  I played a 2Her my first play through and it was fun, plus you look bad-as*.  In many ways I think a 2Her PC may make the game more fun since a DW rouge or warrior makes most fights a joke.  Even if you are a total 2H fanboi I would suggest staying away from idiotic comments like this since they are so easily disproven and just make you seem delusional or downright stupid.

Otherwise, say proud!

I'll agree with you up to a point, though as it stands, it's not actually entirely possible to prove or disprove anything when it comes to 2h v dw, considering there aren't actually any combat parsers available :D

Aye, I'll agree there. Precise striking + Blood thirst will add crit % in the 20s, add leliana's song of courage (with a high cunning build) to that + bravery, and you're likely to have around a 35% crit rate at level 20. Definitely nothing to sneeze at, especially when you consider stunning blows is pretty reliant on criticals.

On a side note, I'm still yet to face Gaxkang. Should be a fun fight :D

To quote a crazy ranger/berserker...

"Minsc will lead with blade and boot, Boo will take care of the details!"

and of course... to all those going on about how mages are so good.

"Magic is impressive, but now Minsc leads, SWORDS FOR EVERYONE!"

Whilst I have kind of got a DW warrior (though the character is leaning more towards archer), I got to say I prefer either S&B or 2H

As others have said, it just feels so good when you see a 2H wielding warrior cut through an enemies health in one hit like a knife through butter.

I remember nearly rofl when going through my first playthrough and I had Sten and Morrigan come rescue my PC and Alastair from Fort Drakon and when it got to the part they had to fight, Sten was chopping up the guards like nobodies business, Morrigan just stood back and watched most of the time  I found it funny because other than constantly bumping his stats up and ensuring he was well equipped I'd hardly been using Sten... up until that point, then after that I was like "I gotta have you in my main party!"
