Yeah, the lack of dialogue in story moments kills Dog for me. He's funny in camp with Alistair, but there's not enough of it. After you find all the fun items he can search for, and go to Denerim, he's perma-benched
Is anyone else resluctant to use 'Dog' because of the lack of dialogue?

I gotta agree. Taking Pugglesworth (Dog) around to "mark" his territory is generally pretty amusing. He does get a bit of a bonus from it too so its not just completely entertaining.

Lack of dialogue was part of it for me. As well as a lack of a personal quest for him.
An equal part though was how he leveled. No skills, fewer talents.

Well there's always that scene in Denerim where the dog tries to "adopt" that really stupid kid.

Well, my favorite dog moment is when Wynne tries to wash him, if you tell her he's a wardog and supposed to smell.
But I'd like to see a real quest for him, have him dig something up that starts a quest.
Oh, and that's another thing that sort of annoys me about Dog. His approval is maxed and it doesn't change. Means the gifts for him are pretty pointless, not even a special cutscene for each (or any) one. So might as well just toss 'em to Morrigan.
Overall, he feels like less of a character than the other characters. Less choices when he levels. Less conversations. Less quest involvement, other than growling at demons.
Which is a shame, because I want more Dog.

Eh maybe BioWare were afraid of focusing too much on the dog and ending up like Fable 2. Difference is, this dog is actually likable. Though I suppose playing through the human noble origin first made me appreciate him more, he doesn't get that great of an introduction otherwise.

I had the dog been an extra slot rather than taking up 4/4 slots then it wouldve seen more use i think, not many want a non-speaking npc in party "with limited slots already", its bad enough in plot areas being forced with wynn for example at circle tower... In reality that gives you 2 slot choices only.

I read somewhere that giving Dog it's gifts causes him to find better stuff. I haven't tested it myself as I never bother to use gifts at all, except a couple of plot specific ones (The Black Grimoire, etc.). I like doing the conversations for approval.

I'm using dog on my third playthru. I used him my first playthru for a while, but I wasn't very good and opted for mages. Now I don't need the extra firepower.
There are some conversation options involving him, but they dry up quickly. I wish there was more to do with him. I always forget to have him fetch me stuff.

Dog was cute when he did stuff, and some of the in party banter was good. But he never expresses an opinion about any other events--makes sense, but a little boring. I don't use him much for that reason.
His gifts are useless with him, AFAIK. But not total worthelss: I was surprised to find that giving other NPCs a lamb bone will get you +1 approval.

The gifts for him are freakin pointless. I don't mind his loyalty stays max since he was obviously bred for those purposes. But no cutscene, nothing. BAD BAD.
The idea was great. Implementation leaves something to be desired though.

would have been nice to have a personal quest for him as well. I realize that would be hard because of the language barrier. But something along the line of finding the remains of his former master (the one he was imprinted upon)

His personal quest seems to be peeing on every landmark in Ferelden, a noble goal.

I'll be honest. There are times I take Dog because I don't want anyone else's dialog for a while.

Yeah, sadly once I get Leliana and Sten at Lothering Dog is largely at camp or the rest of the time. It would be nice having him around more, but it's not worth giving up the dialogue and interaction between the companion characteres, and their interactions with NPC's for sadly

My first 2 chars (Elven Mage, City Elf Rogue) left Carnifex (dog... hey, elves like Latin) at camp more often then not.
But my human noble DW warrior seems unable to. The fact that his dog is his only surviving family member AND has faithfully fought in every fight since the beginning of the origin story through Ostagar makes it very difficult to leave him behind (having dog at Ostagar was ****g awesome, by the way).
I guess my party this time with be Main (DW warrior), Leliana, Morrigan and Lupin (dog).
BY the way, how are you guys investing in the dog's stats? Strength and Dex exclusively? What ratio do you go for?
Also how often does Dog get new powers?

I agree 100%. I thought it sucks that none of the quests you do for your party members are very long at all there just short and they don't tell you muchabout them.

so far using dog almost the entire game (though I will have to use shale for his personal quest and oghren for the anvil)
he's been pretty cool. He found me a cool helmet in Caridan's cross and a cool staff in Frostback mountains. Both sell for well over 1g. What other party member can do that (although rogues can find cool stuff in locked chests). And setting tactics to overwhelm enemy casting magic... priceless.

Dog's dialogue options are limited to your companions. Never really used the dog. His abilities are also pretty boring. Shale is better.

The Shale/Dog dialogue is perhaps the funniest bit in the entire game.
