So I just started a new Mass Effect 2 game, and played all the way up to some of the "Freedom's Progress Mission".  I could never use the save option on the menu screen and I don't know if the game autosaved or not. (however, the option was selected).

I died on Freedom's Progress and choose to quit becuase I wanted a break from playing.  When I came back I had no option to continue my game.  All I could do was start a new game. 

What am I supposed to do?  Can you never manually save in this game?  What am I supposed to do?

If you selected the autosave option then there should be a save file there. You haven't mentioned trying to manually selecting a file to load, so I would suggest you seek to do that first.

Sometimes it takes a while before the game lets you save. You can't save in combat situations, or certain locations; that's when the option is greyed out.
