Actually, I could imagine James just randomly being on the Normandy at that point. You know, just like he randomly appears on the Normandy when you leave Earth at the beginning of the game.

Disagree. Everyone on the Normandy fulfills that criteria. Do you remember how Liara helped saving the SR1 crew in the beginning of ME2? Most people survived because of her. I'm sure Liara was very helpful during that SR2 planetside crash.
