DA will not run, giving me the PhysX error message and telling me to get updated drivers. I've scoured the net and have tried many pieces of advice for many forums, including this one, all with no joy.
I do have the latest Nvidia display drivers for my GTX 260. I have tried the latest PhysX as well as the one that comes on the game's DVD. I have run Clean Sweep to get rid of old driver files.
I have tried running the game as an administrator in Visa Home Premium 32 bit. I do have UAC disabled (have for some time).
I have updated the game to version 1.02. I've also tried disabling PhysX hardware acceleratoin in the Nvidia Control panel. Nothing has worked.
I have no problem running ANY other company's software, including Fallout 3...but as for Bioware...
I was unable to run Mass Effect a few months ago. I hoped this newer Bioware title would be different.
Please help.

By the way, I can run the DA Character Creator demo, if that means anything.

Character creator shouldn't have any bearing on it as the PhysX is for things like arrow impacts and some of the knockback effects and the like. Did you try completely uninstalling PhysX and then reinstall the latest version (there a link here) without any other version?

JironGhrad, thanks for the reply. Yes, I've uninstalled and installed PhysX several times. I currently have the very latest version of it and the Nvidia drivers. I also just uninstalled and reinstalled the whole game, this time with Vista's UAC enabled.. Same problem.

Which error is it giving you specifically?

Error initializing PhysX. Please visit http://www.nividia.com/physx for updated drivers.
I get this when clicking Play from the launcher. I've been to many forums. Lots of people having this error. Some get it fixed by unistialling and reinstalling PhysX. But, I've done that several times with no luck.

www.nvidia.com/object/physx_9.09.0814.html.... a quick search of the problem indicates that the listed version might help... which version were you installing? Also, did you save the file first or just run it?

I have tried that one, the latest one (9.09.1112), and the one that comes on the Dragon Age DVD. None of those have worked. I fully downloaded both of those versions from the Nvidia web site. Then ran and installed. Each time I do that I fully uninstall the previous version.

Have you tried using a driver sweeper after uninstalling the drivers?
#10
Posté 12 décembre 2009 - 04:04
Yes. I just tried again. Uninstalled PhysX. Used driver sweeper. Installed the 9.09.0814 version yet again. Same problem.
Given that I couldn't get Mass Effect to run a few months ago, there may just be something about Bioware games that doesn't work with my system (Visa 32 bit, SP2, fully updated, GTX 260 graphics) for whatever reason. Sad, as I've always loved Bioware games. I've put a lot of time in on this...and I'm about over it. I'll give this until Sunday and then see if Amazon.com will take it back for a refund. I'll have to say adios to Bioware... :-(

An update. Today I yet again uninstalled my Nvidia drivers and PhysX. Rebooted. Used Driver Sweeper to get rid of any remaining traces. Rebooted. Did a clean install of the latest drivers (195.62) which also installs PhysX. I had virus protection off during this. Rebooted.
Still the same error message when I try to run DA. "Error initializing PhysX..."
So, I tried 3 more PhysX versions/installs. The one on the game DVD. Then the 9.09.0814 version from Nvidia site, and the latest version, 9.09.1112, I think it is, from Nvidia. Each time uninstall. Clean, and install again with virus disabled. The thing IS installed, according to Vista and Nvidia. I've got a good system (Athlon X2 5000+, 4 gigs RAM, GTX 260), and I'm not overclocking anything.
Same problem. At this point I've uninstalled and reinstalled video drivers 3 times, PhysX like 6 or 7 times, and the game 2 times. Unless anyone has a solution for me by Sunday night, I'm going to see if Amazon will refund my $60 for the Collector's Edition. I can't get the game to run, and at this point I think my days as a PC gamer are about done, at least certainly for Bioware, since I couldn't get Mass Effect to run, either, but everything else does.

I'm wondering, based on all this, if there's not a problem with the PhysX drivers for that GPU. When was the last clean build of your OS by chance? Does the Event Viewer provide any clues as to where the failure in the PhysX files are?
#13
Posté 13 décembre 2009 - 03:07
Could be. There are other people out there with PhysX problems with other GPU's, though some get it worked out by just reinstalling.
I think I did a clean Vista install on a new hard drive last Fall, so just a little over a year ago.
I'm not sure how to run Event Viewer.

Also, when you run the physx program from the control panel it gives you a nice long list of installed versions. Can you give me the list of installed modules?

I had the same problem, but I got DAO to run.
The issue was related to windows vista and permissions on the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\\\SOFTWARE\\\\AGEIA Technologies" registry key.
For some reason the registry key didn't have an owner, and no users on my PC had access to it - which is why the game couldn't find PhysX. After I set the owner on the key and gave "Everyone" read access to it I was able to play.
Good luck!

Hi, I emailed the support site for the game and they redirected me here. I am having a similar problem as the OP. I have followed similar attempts to correct the problem. Including the one mentioned by chesticles.
I ran the event viewer right after the error occurred again this is the errors that matched time wise in the viewer:
The entry <C:\\USERS\\JAMES\\DOCUMENTS\\BIOWARE\\DRAGON AGE\\NEWS> in the hash map cannot be updated.
Context: Application, SystemIndex Catalog
Details:
A device attached to the system is not functioning. (0x8007001f)
The message states an issue with the news which would be odd as the cause but I thought best to post.
Any help would be appreciated.

I had this issue and managed to solve it. Background, Im running 2 9800GTX+ cards, OCed quad core and 790i MoBo.
I completely uninstalled game. Next I ran Driver Sweeper and removed the Physx driver and rebooted.
Installed game again - still got the physx error. Went to Nvidia website and installed the 196.21 current driver and the game started up.
The only problem I have now is a big white and green "PHYSX" text in the upper right hand of the screen. Cant get rid of it.

The HD 4350 is below the minimum already.
Windows XP Minimum Specifications
OS: Windows XP with SP3
CPU: Intel Core 2 Single (or equivalent) running at 1.6Ghz or greater
AMD 64 (or equivalent) running at 2.0Ghz or greater
RAM: 1 GB or more
Video: ATI Radeon X850 256MB or greater (either this is wrong)
NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT 128MB or greater (or this one is wrong)
DVD ROM (Physical copy)
20 GB HD space
(Note: IMO, the practical choices for the two video cards above should be the Radeon X800 Pro, and the Geforce 6800 GS, at least)
www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php
(And the X850 is still more powerful than that, of course)
Video Card Rankings (DA: O)

PhysX was CPU-driven long before it had any dedicated hardware, either stand-alone, or integrated into a video card, and the game uses the CPU version, unless the install was screwed up.
Here is a proper game quality, Mainline video card, the HD 4670:

first of all im windows 7 and I checked the back of the box it says the recommended specs for video card is ati radeon 3850 512mb hd., so your wrong when you said my video card is below minium when it says in the back of the box that the reccomend is 3850 and I am pretty sure my video card is more then capable of running it because its 4350 512mb hd, and your still not answring my question if I wll get the problem with physx when I install the game. If you dont beleive how my video card is more then capapble then look at the system requirements from gamestop/ebgames site or anysite and it will tell you reccomended video card for DAO is ati radeon 3850 512 mb

Don't be so silly.
This is how badly an unsupported, unusable $25 HD 4350 compares to a $120 HD 3850:
www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php
The generation number has no bearing on anything other than the mere age of the card, which is practically meaningless:
Generational Ladders (and detailed NTK-based ranking list - old class markers)
social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/58/index/575571
Very basic discussion of video cards, video chips, and even of laptops' limits
social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/58/index/519461
Those are for people who are willing to actually read, of course, which, it would seem, does not include this thread's creator.

I'm not asking forr comparison I am asking if my computer will run DAO! You keep on answering with links! Do you not now how to answer a question with sentences! Like I told you it says in the back of the box what the recommended video card is! Its Ati Radeon 3850 512mb, so dont deny that. I dont care if your telling me that there is a better video card. I'm asking if i will get the Physx problem, and if my video card will run it (even though I gave you links proving that the back of the DAO pc box says reccomended video card Ati Radeon 3850 hd 512mb). So please answer my question and no offense if you answer again with links comparing my video card to a better one, then your retarted and I will find someone that can answer a question properly with sentences not with freaking links!
