I had this issue and managed to solve it. Background, Im running 2 9800GTX+ cards, OCed quad core and 790i MoBo.

I completely uninstalled game. Next I ran Driver Sweeper and removed the Physx driver and rebooted.

Installed game again - still got the physx error. Went to Nvidia website and installed the 196.21 current driver and the game started up.

The only problem I have now is a big white and green "PHYSX" text in the upper right hand of the screen. Cant get rid of it.

Hey idk if you have nvidia but you gotta turn off the indicator through the nvidia control panel.  Go into the physx part of the control panel and at the top under "3D settings" is the option for Physx Indicator which should be checked in your case.

I had the same issue.  I worked with EA support for a week or so until
they came up with a solution.  Here are the instructions they gave me.
Be warned,
the instructions ask you to go into the registry editor.  You can
REALLY mess up your system if you make a mistake.  Also, make a backup
of your registry befor you start.

First click on Start button and right above that type in " regedit "
then click enter. This should open up the Registry Editor.

Once
done you will click on the sign next to HKEY Local Machine to expand it
then you will click on the sign next to Software to expand it.

Finally
you will want to click on AGEIA Technologies and on the right hand side
you should see Physx Version. Right click on that and select
permissions.

Click the Advanced button.

Go on the Owner
tab. Select the user name that the current system is logged on, check
“Replace owner on subcontainers and objects” and click OK.

Now
you should be back at the
Permissions window again. In Windows Vista, select the group that the
currently logged on user belong to and check Full Control for Allow.
Click OK.

Good luck

Apologies if this is thread bumping, but I'd like to post to confirm that falinor's fix WORKS. Thank you! :)

I had finally reinstalled DAO to play Awakening, but this time with a different graphics card so I ran into this issue. It was starting to drive me nuts but this thread appears on a basic google search, so hopefully other people who stumble here can play the game. Editing the registry is a great simple fix, so thanks again.
