I know DW cunning rogues do more damage. I know you can avoid getting hit through tanking and I know cunning rogues are generally excellent.

I just can't seem to play one. Just went right back to dex.

Pros:

- still does good damage
- basically unhittable with standard attacks
- benefit from positioning but do not rely upon it
- no real need for a tank
- can still kill mages and other priority targets first by stealthing up to them
- when that monster you didn't quit kill turns around and starts attacking, it's generally not an issue

Cons:

- low bonus from Exploit Weakness, Song of Courage and Tainted Blade
- no DW skill has resistance checks based on dex, but Riposte is based on cunning (in my experience Riposte generally works on mages though)
- needs to spend 4 skill points to be able to open locks on your own
- lower persuasion, but I think it makes no difference with 4 ranks of Coercion
- dex does not help you against special attacks or spells

But why play a dex DW rogue rather than a dex DW warrior? Simple: Stealth, backstabbing, and Dirty Fighting. Both are good, I just prefer rogues.

I don't know, DW rogues are my favorite class and the only time I had any real use for a MEGA-DEX™
set is when I was doing the Harvester on Insanity, and that was only because the "tank" that they provide you with sucks major ass. But I have to admit, it does feel pretty godlike to get destroyed by that boss like twenty times and then respec into over 100 dex and just take a bio break, and come back with a spiffy new achievement

I prefer main hand weapons Dual Weapon Rogue, similar like DW Warrior but using Rogue and substitute Strength with Cunning

Pros
Damage plus armor penetration from Cunning
More critical than Warrior
Can back stab but not rely on it
Duelist and/or Assassin is a solid melee specialization
Alternatively Bard and/or Ranger can be fun
Have a lot of utility skills
Can become invisible if choose this talent tree

Cons
Not as fast as dual wield dagger
Fragile at early and middle game
Very hard to set up due to attribute spread
Hard to set up talents, must rely on Tomes
Must carefully build not like Warrior
Must be patient until having 36 Dexterity at level 12

Ophir147: True you don't technically need to go all out on dex. Mostly early on really. I haven't figured out exactly where to stop though since I don't know the exact monster attack ratings.

Nizaris1: Strength rogues are indeed very good, but I think you actually forget the main benefit of it: you get to wear massive armor and therefore, while you are easy to hit, you take much less damage and in particular you are able to survive special abilities that always hit anyway like Overwhelm. These abilities are the one thing dex rogues can't really handle.

It's why I like rogues so much. Potentially 3 different main attributes each with their own pros and cons, and mixtures mostly work well too (just not strength+cunning).

What i am talking about above is not Strength build, but Dexterity-Cunning build. Strength is just for main weapon you want to use and armor you want to wear. So basically, if you want to use tier 7 swords, Strength 32 minimum, And it is good to wear light dragonscale armor, Strength 34 (Strength must comes from Fade bonus plus items to get minimum).... You still need Dexterity to hit, so you may add more than the minimum 36. But Duelist already cover +10 to attack and your Strength do give chance to hit, so +4 Dexterity Fade bonus make 40 Dexterity i think is enough.

Like i mention, it is hard to set up.

Plus Dexterity-Cunning main hand weapons DW, that makes 4 types of rogues you can make :-)

Dex-Cun dagger Rogue
Dex dagger Rogue
STR main hand weapon Rogue
Dex-Cun main hand weapon Rogue

My favourite rogue is a dex heavy, dual dagger wielding rogue, but with some Cunning. (Around 30 in Origins). You still have solid defence and accuracy, but you get some effect from your cunning improving your backstabs for example. (Assuming you chose Assassin).

If you have DLC items, you can be at 22 cunning before items and still end up with more than 30. Pretty good for a dex rogue!

One really fun thing to try is to use multiple rogues with Song of Courage. One will get 3 stacks, the next only 2, and the third only 1. But it's still immensely powerful. I did that in Awakening and on top of that had all 3 rogues use Flicker to zip between targets backstabbing them. No normal mobs survived it :)
