Could James be the one? Or could it be the child in the ending part where he will be chosen as the new playable character for the new Mass Effect? It is up to the hands of the developers.

Update:

Majority of the gamers do not want only humans to be playable, but to choose any other kinds of races.

Why does it have to be a man?

I don't want to even think about an ME4 whilst ME3 remains in such a broken state.

James? I thought he didn't pass the N7 program.

Apparently it is going to be Mario or Samus and the enemy will be a new Reaper named Bowser.... LOL! Just kidding everybody, just kidding...

Won't be James.... that'd actually eliminate your preference over total character customization. it could be the child you see. or they very well go just spin off on something else entirely.

Pretty sure it's gonna be James, considering he wakes up in a pile of rubble at the end of the destroy ending.

He is trolling, ignore him. It's obviously Kaiden, i don't know where the hell he got James from.

I don't know and I don't care cause unless Bioware pulls a MIRACLE out of it's ass I'm never buying another Mass Effect game.

Jar Jar Binks.

Good as any other since there can be no ME4.

I see great disappointments from fans of ME. I hope they didn't broke the disc.

It wouldn't be James.

If a Mass Effect IV were ever made the player would no doubt still get to choose whether or not the protagonist is male or female at character creation. Since James is definitely male, that would rule him out. Also the problem with shifting squadmates in one game to another game's protagonist, is that their personalities and backstories have already been heavily defined. This would present the player with much less roleplaying oppurtunities than they had with Shepard.

Also, and this is just a guess on my part, but if there is a Mass Effect IV I'm betting it will be set a few hundred or even thousands of years after the events of ME3. Otherwise the game would be set in a galaxy where galactic civilization was practically in ruins. It would also present the problem of having this major threat emerge for the protagonist to combat, just months or a few years after the galaxy had defeated the Reapers. Having these major threats emerge so frequently would begin to stretch credulity.

Unless the protagonist is Asari or Krogan, no one we met in the first 3 ME games.

Edit: I suppose they might want to do a rebuilding game, but the series would lose its space opera vibe if they do that.

None. Bioware isn't going to make a ME4 until they fix ME3. I will make sure of it.

So it HAS to be someone in the game?

Well, if not Jar Jar Binks then it must be that Krogan going on about whether or not there are fish in the Citadel lake.  He could go searching the galaxy for good fishing holes.  You "win" the game when he finally reels one in and has dinner.

Truth be told, as soon as I saw James discussing the N7 program.. I thought there is a very strong chance he'd be the next protagonist. He's also non-romanceable, which is something which works in favour of him being the next protagonist due to Bioware not needing to address previous romances for a future RPG game. I fully expected him to feature in a solo game, probably not an RPG but a more streamlined shooter or FPS.

However, due to the lack of interest in him, and also the hatred for the character due to what many percieve as a waste of a slot that could've been given to an ME2 character, I think they may backtrack.

I hope they backtrack, as he wasn't a terribly interesting character, and there are better ones they could go for next time.

The thought that they could even have entertained the idea of that guy being protagonist-worthy makes me urp my lunch.

What, were they going to call the next one, "Mass Effect Shores"?  "Jersey Effect"?
