I named mine Okiinu, which is bastardized Japanese for "Big Dog."

Well, my current dog's name is Mischief... as in the quest "Mischief in the larder"... I just thought... it would fit...

Whoops again. Apparently this is at least the third thread on the subject. Well, so much for originality.
Bet nobody else named their Dog Okiinu, though.

Penny Arcade came up with Barkspawn a long time ago... Thought it was hilarious so my mage's dog is named Barkspawn.

He looks and acts very much like a dog I once had, made me miss him. So I often name him after that dog.
But otherwise it's Traumutt or Caltrop.

Bertram, always Bertram.
Tried naming him Igor in one, just wasn't the same.

Mabarian.
He's a Mabari War Hound, so I named him for his Breed.
I know. Very Imaginative (/sarcasm)

I had 3 dogs. Jawz, Lobo and Ubu.
Ubu is for one of those short films after a tv show a very long time ago. Some people might recognize "Sit, Ubu..Sit."
Lobo was named after a band and his dog.
And of course Jawz was because his tremendous poundage, ripping, shredding, tear your limb off teeth.
My husband wanted me to name him Abominator lol.

Named mine Huan. If anybody knows where that came from without googling, I'll make 'em a gin martini.
I may be a bit fuzzy on the details and Ostagar seemed like ages ago...but does the game actually confirms Dog's gender? I had assumed it was male, but wasn't sure.

Like you (I gather), I actually read The Silmarillion as opposed to just owning a copy to sit on the shelf next to the rest of 'em.
I prefer vodka martinis though, as opposed to gin—but I'll take a Vesper, if you know how to mix it right.

I don't think anyone ever says anything specific like, "That's a male dog," but I'm pretty sure various bits of stray dialogue about the dog use the pronoun "He." (For example, in Camp when Morrigan complains about finding the little… gift that Dog left for her.)
